Yes, and you should before donating. Wash in fragrance-free detergent on a warm cycle and let it dry flat. Don't use fabric softener. King Cole Baby Pure DK handles machine washing well, which matters because hospitals launder everything at high temperatures before it reaches a baby.

Q: Where can I donate crochet preemie hats?

Start with your nearest hospital's NICU and ask for the volunteer coordinator. If they're not taking donations, try preemie-specific charities, pregnancy loss organizations, or a local church group that already has a hospital contact. Always ask about their fiber, color and trim rules before starting.

Q: Do preemie beanies need to be a certain color?

Most units accept any color, though some ask you to avoid red and dark shades that can bleed in the wash. Bright and cheerful is usually welcome. As are pastels and neutrals. Ask your coordinator, since guidelines vary a lot between hospitals.

Free Micro Preemie Crochet Hat Pattern at a Glance

Waypoint is a textured beanie with a deep ribbed brim that gently stretches. The body of the hat is worked in clusters that can be worked in a single color or you can alternate colors row by row, so you get that two-tone texture without doing anything fancy. The smallest size measures about eight (8) inches around and takes roughly 30-40 yards, so a single skein of DK plus a bit of scrap will get you a full set of five. I’d rate this one easy enough for beginners (and great practice for basic stitches!) and a quick make for advanced beginners to intermediate crocheters.

Why I Design Free Preemie Crochet Patterns

I’m a mom of five, and our third spent time in the NICU. Thankfully her stay was short, yet still left a mark that hasn’t faded, and it’s the reason I keep coming back to preemie designs year after year. I’d only just learned to crochet back then. Now I get to hand that time back as free patterns, which I love to do.

The Waypoint baby beanie joins a small collection I’ve built for the tiniest babies: the Sweet Stars Bonding Squares, the Labyrinth Lullaby Hat and its matching Labyrinth Lullaby Bonding Square, and the Hopscotch Preemie Hat. Each one came out of the same question: what would have helped us, when we were sitting in that room? The answer is sizing. A donation bin needs a range of sizes, so I always write my baby hat patterns in a range of sizes and then check each one against published neonatal head measurements before releasing it.

What Size Hat Does a Preemie Need?

This is the question I get more than any other, and the honest answer is that it depends on the baby’s weight, not their age. A baby born at 26 weeks and a baby born at 34 weeks can be months apart in due date and inches apart in head size. Hospitals sort donations by weight bracket for exactly this reason.

Waypoint is written in five sizes that follow those brackets:

1-2 lb – the smallest micro preemie size, for babies still in the isolette
3-4 lb – the size most NICUs run short on
5-6 lb – fits many late preemies and small full-term newborns
0-6 months – fits average sized full term babes and growing preemies
6-12 months – so every babe has a hat as they grow bigger!

The deep ribbed brim gives each size some stretch, so there’s overlap between them. That’s on purpose. A hat that grips gently is safer and more comfortable than one sized exactly to the millimeter, and it buys the baby a couple of extra weeks of wear.

How to Crochet a Full Set of Preemie Hats

If you’re making to donate, five hats in five different sizes can much better than making five hats in the same size. Nurses can grab what fits instead of hunting through a bin. You may also want to check with your local hospital or charity to see what’s needed most in your area! Here’s how I’d work through a set.

Start with the smallest size while your yarn ball is full and your hands are fresh
Work up through the sizes in order so the pattern stays in your head
Keep the brim color the same across all five if you want them to read as a set (great if you’re making a set for one baby as they grow)
Use one main color and pull accent rows from your scrap bin, since the accent uses only a little yarn
Pop each finished hat in a zip bag with the size written on the outside

One skein of DK/baby yarn plus a handful of scraps should carry you through all five sizes or darn close to it! Check with your receiving hospital before you start, because some units ask for specific fibers or ban certain trims. That goes for colors too. They may or may not want the hats or other items to be washed prior to receiving and if washed then there will probably be specifics about the laundry detergent used as well. All in the name of the babes of course!

Best Yarn for Crochet Preemie Hats

Preemie skin is thin and can be very sensitive, so yarn choice matters more here than on any other project. Soft acrylic and cotton blends are the safest bet. They wash hot, dry fast, and hold up to the industrial laundry cycles hospitals run.

Skip wool and anything with a halo, since fibers can shed near a baby’s face. Leave off embellishments like buttons, pom poms, ribbon and appliques too. Anything that can come loose won’t make it past the donation desk.

I used King Cole Cherished DK for all the samples I created of my Waypoint Free Micro Preemie crochet hat pattern. It’s soft against delicate skin, it holds stitch definition well enough to show off the texture, and it comes in a brilliant variety of colors both soft and bright if you want to make a matching set. Meet the Testers Behind This Preemie Hat Pattern

Every size in this pattern was crocheted by someone other than me before it went live. That’s a little look behind the scenes! It’s such an important step because it’s the part that catches the problems – a stitch count that doesn’t add up in the smallest size, an instruction that made sense in my head and nowhere else, a brim that ran tight for a looser hooker.

YARN: King Cole Cherished DK Weight 3 yarn, (100% Low Pill Acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g, 262 yds/240 m).
YARDAGE: 30 – 100 yds
Sample Colors: I used King Cole Cherished DK yarn in Nickel, Lavender, Sea Breeze and King Cole Cherished DK yarn in Summer Fruit

HOOK: US J/10 6.0 mm for Hat Body, US G/6 4.0 mm for Brim only
Yarn needle, scissors

Experience Level: Beginner – Easy

Gauge: 10 rows x 13 sts = 4” square

Using J/10 6.0 mm hook Ch 21, work 2 sc, 2 dc alternating across, turn. Repeat until your square measures at least 5” tall, then check gauge.

STEP 1: Create a loop with yarn, place hook through the loop, yo and pull the yarn through the loop, keeping the loop open in a circle instead of pulling the yarn tight, ch 1.

STEP 2: Insert hook back in circle, yo and pull up a loop through the circle. Yo again and pull through the 2 loops on the hook, 1 sc completed! Repeat Step 2 to create additional stitches. Hold stitches with one hand, gently pull yarn end with other hand to close circle.

PATTERN NOTES:

Read through the entire pattern first.
The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
The first stitch of each round should be placed in the same st as the beginning chain.
Sl st does not count as a stitch.
Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated. Place stitches between ( and ) in the same stitch.
All single crochets will be worked in double crochets from the previous round, and all double crochets will be worked in single crochets from the previous round.
Increases for each round are only worked in single crochets, not double crochets.
Hat is worked in joined rounds from the top down. The brim is worked in rows around the bottom of the hat, with the final row joining the 1st = last.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in BLO next 3 sts, turn, (3 sc).

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in BLO next 3 sts, sl st in next 2 sts of Round 13, turn, (3 sc).

Rows 4-38: Repeat Rows 2-3, alternating. (3 sc).
