Free Elixir Crochet Bookmark Pattern
Are you a complete bibliophile like me and my family? Or are you just here to make a gift for one?
This crochet lace bookmark pattern uses my Elixir Stitch to make a pretty little page keeper. You can hook it up from the yarn already in your stash. It comes in three styles: skinny, wide and corner. Each one stays thin and flat, so it slips into your current read without damaging the pages or stretching the spine.
And yes… this one has a name too. With five kids in the house, a good book and a quiet corner is basically medicine. So these are my Elixir Escape Bookmarks, because one chapter at the end of the day is my favorite little escape!

Quick Crochet Lace Bookmarks in 3 Styles!
The Elixir Escape Bookmarks are a free crochet lace bookmark pattern trio that works up in under 30 mins with a little DK yarn. The Elixir Stitch gives them an open, lacy look while the rows are repetitive and simple to follow. Make them skinny, wide or as a corner bookmark that hugs the page. It’s a quick holiday stashdown project for book lovers that makes a great last-minute gift.
Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Lace Bookmark
A lacy bookmark needs a smooth, thin yarn to look its best. The open stitches are the whole point, and fuzzy or bulky yarn fills them right in.
Sport (2) or DK (3) cotton is my top pick here. It’s thin enough to close the book on, and it’s thick enough to let the stitch pattern show. Cotton also keeps its shape after being tucked into pages over and over, and it won’t fluff up or pill.
No cotton in your stash? A smooth acrylic or bamboo blend in DK or sport weight works too. Just skip anything plush, fuzzy or super stretchy. A smaller hook keeps the stitches neat and the bookmark nice and slim.
Skinny, Wide or Corner: Which Crochet Bookmark Should You Make?
Three styles, one pattern. Here’s how to pick the right one for the reader you’re making it for.
Skinny Bookmark: A slim strip that slides into paperbacks without adding bulk. It’s the one to make in a batch for book club friends or stocking stuffers.
Wide Bookmark: More room for the lace pattern to shine. It’s a nice fit for hardcovers, cookbooks and Bibles, and it’s easy to find on a crowded shelf.
Corner Bookmark: This crochet corner bookmark slips over the top corner of the page instead of sitting in the spine. It won’t fall out, it won’t dent the pages, and kids think it’s the coolest thing ever.
Can’t decide? Make all three. They work up fast, and a matching set makes a really cute gift.

Why Make This Free Crochet Lace Bookmark Pattern?
This little project is a fun way to try the Elixir Stitch without starting a big scarf or blanket. It’s quick, it’s pretty, and it’s a gift that gets used every single day.
Here are a few reasons to add it to your library:
Kind to Your Books: Thin DK cotton keeps it flat between the pages, so no bent covers or stretched spines.
Lacy but Not Fussy: The Elixir Stitch looks fancy, but once you get the rhythm, the rows fly by.
Three Styles in One Pattern: Skinny, wide or corner… pick one or make the whole set.
Gift-Ready Fast: Make a stack for teachers, book club buddies, kids and stocking stuffers.
Stash Friendly: Each bookmark uses just a little yarn, so those leftover DK bits finally have a job.
Easy to Tote Around: It fits in any project bag for appointments, car line or the sidelines.
Quick Gift Ideas for the Book Lovers on Your List
A handmade bookmark is small, but it never ends up in the junk drawer. Pair it with something little and you’ve got a gift that feels thoughtful without blowing the budget. Here are a few of my favorite combos:
- Skinny bookmark tucked inside a new paperback
- Wide bookmark + a bookstore gift card
- Corner bookmark + a kids’ chapter book
- Bookmark + a bag of specialty coffee or loose tea for quiet reading time
- Set of three + a reading journal for the book club host
- Bookmark slipped into a holiday card for teachers, coaches or bus drivers
The Best Yarn for the Elixir Bookmark Pattern!
You want your crocheted bookmark to be at its best, especially when gifting. I recommend a light weight yarn (sport 2 or DK 3), especially cotton, for easy stitching and durability. Cotton holds its shape without stretching, it won’t pill, and it’s light enough to pop in the mail with a card.
The yarn I picked for this free crochet lace bookmark pattern is King Cole Cottonsoft DK and Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK. Both are sturdy cottons with a ton of great colors to choose from!

Special Stitches & Techniques:
Linked Single Crochet (lsc):
Begin row/round with a single crochet or as indicated in pattern. Insert hook in leftmost vertical bar of previous st (sc), do not yo, insert hook in next st or ch-1 sp (as indicated), yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on the hook. (See Photos below).
FIRST Linked Half Double Crochet of each ROW (lhdc):
Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and pull up a loop (this is the yo for lhdc), insert hook in next st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.
Linked Half Double Crochet (lhdc):
Insert hook in vertical bar of previous st, yo and pull up a loop, insert hook in next st or ch-1 sp (as indicated), yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.
Stacked Double Crochet (st dc) Tutorial:
STEP 1: Single crochet in first st (same sp as beginning ch), insert hook into front vertical bar of single crochet, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on hook.
SPECIAL Stitches Placement GUIDE: (Skinny: Rows 7, 13, 18. Wide: Rows 9, 16).
Stitches are placed based on each group of 5 stitches from the prior row/round: (2 dc, ch-1, 2 dc). When working into each group you will work a lhdc in first dc, skip next dc, work 3 lhdc in ch-1 sp, skip next dc, work a lhdc in last dc. This stitch placement keeps the look of the current row consistent with the other rounds having the groups of 5 stitches.
Stitches are worked where arrows indicate, single arrow for single stitches, 3 arrow where the 3 lhdc are worked in the ch-1 space.
NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch. First stitch of each row should be placed in the same st as beginning chain.
- Pattern is worked in rows.
- Finish straight bookmark with tassel braid or fringe.
- Corner bookmark is worked in 2 pieces that are crocheted together at 2 edges.
- Feel free to substitute another weight yarn and adjust hook size accordingly!
- I recommend blocking finished bookmarks.

STRAIGHT BOOKMARK FINISH:
TO ADD TASSEL:
Step 1: Cut 6 strands of yarn about 12 inches long.
Step 2: Insert hook upward through any of the 6 stitches on the top of the bookmark. Place the center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it through the stitch creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for each of the 5 yarn strands, placing one in each of the 6 stitches. Step 4: Group strands into 3 groups of 4, and braid about 2 inches.
Step 5: Tie off the ends in one of 2 ways. 1) Tie the end in single overhand knot, leaving the braid as long or short as you like. -OR- 2) Cut an additional length of yarn 4-6 inches. Lay the yarn under the end of the braid and tie a tight double (square) knot around the braid.
Step 6: Trim the ends evenly. My braid is about 1.5 inches and tassel and knot are about 2 inches together. Adjust yours as you like.
TO ADD FRINGE:
Step 1: Cut 18 (for skinny) or 28 (for wide) strands of yarn about 6 inches long.
Step 2: Insert hook upward through any of the stitches on the top of the bookmark. Place the center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it through the stitch creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten. Repeat for each of the remaining 8 or 13 yarn strands.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for the 9 or 14 strands on the bottom of the bookmark.
Step 4: Then trim the ends evenly. My ends are about 2 inches long.

Crochet Lace Bookmark FAQ
What is the best yarn for crochet bookmarks?
A thin, smooth yarn works best. DK or sport weight cotton is my favorite because it stays flat, holds its shape and doesn’t pill after lots of use. Crochet thread works too if you like a really fine bookmark. Avoid bulky or fuzzy yarns, since they make the book hard to close and hide the stitch pattern.
How do you use a corner bookmark?
A corner bookmark is a little triangle pocket that slips over the top corner of your page. Just slide it on where you stop reading and close the book. It sits on the page instead of in the spine, so it won’t fall out. It won’t stretch the binding or dent the paper either.
How long does it take to crochet a bookmark?
Most crochet bookmarks take under an hour, and the Elixir Escape Bookmarks are even quicker at under 30 minutes each. If you’re making a set for gifts, you can finish all three styles in one evening of TV time. Once you get the stitch rhythm down, they go even faster.
Will a crochet bookmark damage my book?
Not if you pick the right yarn. A thin cotton bookmark flattens out with use and won’t harm the pages. Thick or bulky yarn is what causes trouble, because it can stretch the spine of a paperback. If you’re worried, make the skinny or corner style. Both are gentle on books of any size.
How do I keep my crochet bookmark flat?
Blocking is the trick. Pin your bookmark flat, mist it with water, and let it dry completely. For cotton, you can also steam it with an iron held just above the fabric. A light spray of starch adds a little extra body. It helps a lacy bookmark keep its shape and slip into a book easily.
