From Cocoa Bean to Sweet Chocolate Treats
Chocolate, that delicious treat we all love, starts its journey as the seed of a tropical tree. These seeds, called cocoa beans, are roasted and then ground into a paste. This paste is then mixed with sugar, milk (for milk chocolate), and other ingredients to create the chocolate we enjoy.
It takes a lot of effort to make a single candy bar. Believe it or not, it takes 400 cocoa beans to make just one pound of chocolate!
The journey of a chocolate bar is long and complex. It involves many steps and travels across many countries. From growing the cocoa beans to harvesting, processing, and finally packaging, it’s a truly global effort.
There are many types of chocolate!
- Dark chocolate has the highest cocoa content, giving it a naturally rich, intense, slightly bitter flavor.
- Milk chocolate is sweeter and milder due to the addition of milk.
- White chocolate is made from cocoa butter, sugar, and milk, but doesn’t contain any cocoa solids.
- Ruby chocolate is a newer variety with a unique berry-like flavor.
When you choose chocolate, consider opting for Fair Trade options to support sustainable and ethical cocoa farming practices.

Happy Hooking, 💜

I just got the Tony’s Chocolonely dark chocolate set. Yum! Dark milk chocolate with pretzels and toffee, dark chocolate with almonds and sea salt, and 70% dark chocolate. All delicious. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have squares to break into. It’s all different shaped polygons, kind of like a crazy quilt. They’re working to end exploitation of the workers in the chocolate chain.
Hi Traci,
Thanks so much for visiting and sharing your experience! I do love Tony’s Chocoloney Dark too, but yep it makes a little mess when you break it apart. haha! Love that there are companies out there trying to take care of workers and using a non-exploitive supply chain!
Happy Hooking!
