Free Crochet Pattern
Hey there Crochet Friends! I am so excited to bring you another fun and functional (my fave combination!) Free Crochet Pattern! I had a lot of fun making and designing the Cast Iron Handle Cover and Pot Holders Pattern. I sure hope y’all have as much fun making these as I did!
The Cast Iron Handle Cover pattern was inspired by my sadly burned and endlessly dirty handle covers. We only cook with Cast Iron Pans in our house, but I found that the covers I was given were not a good fit and were NOT easy to clean! Crochet Queen to the rescue y’all!
With these issues in mind, I started thinking about a way to create a Cast Iron Handle Cover that was both quick and easy to make and clean, that would fit the handle well, and was thick enough to keep us from burning our fingers! I know there are lots of similar patterns out there, and this is by no means an original idea, but I think you will find my method of construction to be quick and easy, and the fit to be great!

So I played around with a few different methods, but quickly settled on what I think is the quickest and best approach to construction. The Cast Iron Handle Cover is very quick and easy to make, great for instant gratification and giving them as gifts! I love a fun project that I can give away, and this one great because you can make several pretty quickly.
Of course I couldn’t stop with the handle covers, and had to design a Pot Holder to go with it! They make the perfect pair, and the Pot Holders can be used for any dish, hot or cold! Give these together with a pan, a recipe and the ingredients (best for desserts!), or make a nice matching set of pot holders and handle covers! Don’t forget to make a few for yourself too!

The Cast Iron Handle Cover pattern is very quick to make, you could make several in an hour, and the Pot Holder works up in under an hour too! The patterns both consist of simple repeats, so this is a great Netflix and Crochet project! The Cast Iron Pot Holders would make great items to sell at your fall markets! It’s always good to stock your table with quick projects you can sell for a lower price point!

Make your own Crochet Cast Iron Kitchen Set!
This crochet pattern is written in US English terms
Materials:
- YARN: (2 strands) Paintbox Cotton Aran Worsted Weight 4 yarn, (100% cotton, 1.7 oz/50 g, 93 yds/85 m)
- Sample Colors: Lipstick Pink with Coffee Bean, Paper White with Pale Lilac, Royal Blue with Kingfisher Blue, and Bubblegum Pink with Daffodil Yellow
- YARDAGE: 2 STRANDS Held together
- Handle Covers: 20 – 40 yds
- Pot Holder: 100 – 120 yds
- HOOK: US I/9 5.5 mm
Finished Size:
Small Handle: 3.5” x 1.5”
Large Handle: 4” x 2”
Pot Holder: 7” x 7”
Experience Level: Easy, Beginner friendly pattern
Gauge: Check your Gauge first with a I hook
Handles: 6 sc and 7 rows = 2”
Pot Holder: 4 puff st + sc x 10 rows = 4″
Pattern Stitches:
This crochet pattern is written in US English terms
Pattern Key:
st(s) – stitch(es)
sp(s) – space(s)
sl st – slip stitch
ch(s) – chain(s)
sc – single crochet
Puff st – puff stitch – see special stitches
yo – yarn over
FO – fasten off
Special Stitches:
PUFF STITCH: Yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull up a loop, (5 loops on hook), yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull up a loop, (7 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1. Puff stitch formed!
NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Make a gauge swatch to ensure accurate sizing. Having the correct gauge is helpful, but not entirely vital for this pattern. The best gauge is to try the handle cover on your pan once you have completed the first few rounds. The fit should be snug but easy to put on and remove for cleaning.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch. First stitch of each row should be placed in the same st as beginning chain.
- Sl st does not count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated in pattern.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
- Work stitches between ( and ) in same stitch.
- Pattern is worked holding 2 strands of worsted weight yarn together.
- Handle covers are worked in joined rounds. Pot Holder is worked in rows.
- You can use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of each round.
- Try the handle covers on your pan once you have completed 4-5 rounds. Fit should be snug for safety, but be easy to put on & remove for cleaning
- To make handle covers longer you can add additional rounds of suzette st or sc.

Safety First!
A crochet cast iron pot holder or skillet handle cover is very handy, but it’s important to remember that safety comes first in the kitchen. These handle covers help add a layer between your hand and the pan handle, but cast iron can and will hold a lot of heat, so please always use care and test the temperature before grabbing anything straight from the stove or oven.
I strongly recommend cotton yarn for kitchen projects like these because it handles heat better than many synthetic fibers. Cotton will not melt. Acrylic and other man-made yarns can soften, melt, or become damaged when exposed to high heat, which is the last thing you want near hot cookware. Cotton not only offfers a sturdier, more dependable fabric for pot holders and pan handle covers, but it also washes up well in the machine.
BUT even when using cotton, please remember that crochet fabric is not the same as a thick oven mitt. Always use caution around very hot pans, open flames, and oven temperatures, and never leave your handle cover on cookware while it is actively heating. Especially with a gas stove. And always watch to be sure that the handle cover does not come into contact with the burner or flame on any stovetop.
***Please do NOT use the pot holder or handle covers IN the OVEN! They are NOT Safe to be placed into the oven!!
CAST IRON POT HOLDERS PATTERN DIRECTIONS:
Small Pan Handle Cover:
- Finished size should be approximately 3.5” x 1.5”.
Round 1: Ch 4, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next, 4 sc in last ch, turn and work back down the other side of beginning ch, sc in next, 2 sc in last ch, sl st to join, (10 sc).
Round 2-8: Ch 1, sc in each st, sl st to join, (10 sc, 7 rounds).
Round 9: Ch 1, skip 1st st, sc in next 9 sts, sl st to join, (9 sc).
Round 10-11: Ch 1, sc in each st, sl st to join, (9 sc, 2 rounds).
FO and weave in ends. Finished!
Large Pan Handle Cover:
- Finished size should be approximately 4” x 2”.
Round 1: Ch 5, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 sts, 4 sc in last ch, turn and work back down the other side of beginning ch, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in last ch, sl st to join, (12 sc).
Round 2-10: Ch 1, sc in each st, sl st to join, (12 sc, 9 rounds).
Round 11: Ch 1, skip 1st st, sc in next 11 sts, sl st to join, (11 sc).
Round 12-13: Ch 1, sc in each st, sl st to join, (11 sc, 2 rounds).
FO and weave in ends. Finished!
Cast Iron Pot Holders:
- Finished size should be approximately 7” x 7”.
- If your work curls in on the first few rows, just tug gently on both ends to straighten.
Row 1: Ch 29 loosely, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc2tog 13 times, sc in last, (15 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc, [puff st, sc,] 7 times, (7 puff sts, 8 sc).
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc, (skip ch 1 here and throughout) [puff st, sc,] 7 times, (7 puff sts, 8 sc).
Row 4-15: Repeat Row 3, (7 puff sts, 8 sc, 12 rows).
Row 16: Ch 1, sc, 2 sc in next 13 sts, sc in last. FO and weave in ends. Finished!

Hi there. I was giving your large cast iron handle cover a shot but it seems like something is off. Is the second row supposed to be dc? None of your pictures look like dc so it seems like sc is more likely. Then you go from 24 stitches to 11 on the decrease. Is the skip one supposed to be repeated around? That seems like a drastic change so I feel like the 11 must have been an oopsy.

Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know! Total copy and paste error on my part! R2-10 on the Large Handle Cover should be sc, so 12 sc and 9 rounds. Got it corrected!!
