Suzette Cast Iron Handle Covers – Free Crochet Pattern

I do love a crochet project that is actually going to get used. This crochet cast iron skillet handle cover free pattern came from wanting something practical for the kitchen that still felt nice to make. Not just looked at, not tucked in a drawer for later, but grabbed over and over again because it’s genuinely handy. That’s exactly where the idea for the Suzette Cast Iron Kitchen Set came from.

If you use cast iron, then you already know those handles do not mess around. A good handle cover is one of those little things that makes a big difference, and I figured if I was making one, I may as well make it pretty too. So this set includes two sizes of cast iron skillet handle covers, plus a matching pot holder to pull it all together.

💜 Happy Hooking!

Suzette Cast Iron Kitchen Set

The Suzette Cast Iron Kitchen Set is beginner-friendly and easy to make. The Suzette stitch is simple to learn and gives the set a useful textured finish. See the step by step photo tutorial below.

At our house, we only use cast iron to cook with. Which means we use pot holders and pan handle covers every day. I’m sure y’all can guess that with a crochet designer in the house, of course our handle holders are handmade.

The Suzette Cast Iron Kitchen Set includes 3 handy pieces: 2 sizes of cast iron skillet handle covers plus a 7.5 x 7.5 inch pot holder. They’re all free right here, so you can make a matching set for everyday cooking.

The cotton yarn and Suzette stitch combination provides an awesome texture for both thickness (heat protection) and for grip. It’s an easy, beginner-friendly project that works up quickly, is useful, giftable and goes right into the wash whenever you need them to.

Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Own Covers

I used Paintbox Cotton Aran in with Stormy Grey with Marine Blue and Pansy Purple as well as Paper White with Mustard Yellow and Bubblegum Pink with a I/9 5.5 mm hook for my Suzette Cast Iron Kitchen Set.

I chose this yarn first because it’s easy to clean. Whenever your crochet cast iron skillet handle covers get food or grease on them, you can toss them in the wash. They should hold their shape well and come out looking fresh again after a clean.

I also love this yarn because it gives the stitches good definition and makes a sturdy fabric that works well for kitchen items. You want something with structure here, especially for the handle covers, so they hold their shape nicely and feel substantial in your hand.

It’s important to use natural fibers when making projects that will be used with heat. Cotton is the best choice for durability and ease of cleaning. You can also use wool, linen and hemp yarns. Cotton blended with these materials or even a small amount (less than 50%) bamboo can also be used. You really do NOT want to use any yarn with acrylic or polyester for the pan handles as these yarns can melt – let’s avoid burns or messes!

You can safely use any cotton, kitchen cotton, or worsted weight cotton yarn, though you may need to adjust your hook size slightly depending on the thickness and how tightly you crochet.

My favorite cotton yarns:

Paintbox Cotton Aran

Premier Cotton Sprout

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton

Crochet Cast Iron Skillet Handle Cover Free Pattern

A crochet cast iron skillet handle cover free pattern is such a handy thing to have in the kitchen, especially if you use your pans often and want something reusable, washable, and made by hand. This pattern gives you a simple way to dress up your cookware while also adding a layer between your hand and the hot handle. It is an easy project with a practical purpose, which makes it extra satisfying to finish.

What I like most about this set is that it does not stop at just one piece. Along with the cast iron handle covers, you also get a matching pot holder, so everything coordinates nicely and feels like a proper little kitchen set. The Suzette stitch keeps the whole project easy enough for beginners, but still gives it a lovely texture that looks polished and holds up well for everyday use.

The Suzette stitch is one of those stitches that looks more detailed than it really is. It’s made by working a single crochet and a double crochet into the same stitch, then skipping the next stitch, which gives you a lovely texture without making things complicated. Once you find your rhythm, you’ll relax into it easily.

Safety First!

A crochet cast iron skillet handle cover is handy, but safety always comes first in the kitchen. These covers help add a layer between your hand and the pan handle, but cast iron can hold a lot of heat, so always use care and test the temperature before grabbing anything straight from the stove or oven.

Cotton yarn is recommended for kitchen projects like these because it handles heat better than many synthetic fibers. Acrylic and other man-made yarns can soften, melt, or become damaged when exposed to high heat, which is the last thing you want near hot cookware. Cotton gives you a sturdier, more dependable fabric for pot holders and pan handle covers, and it also washes up well in the machine.

Even with cotton, remember that crochet fabric is not the same as a thick oven mitt. Always use caution around very hot pans, open flames, and oven temperatures, and never leave your handle cover on cookware while it is actively heating. Also make sure that the handle cover does not come into contact with the stovetop, burner or flame on a gas stove.

***Please do NOT use the pot holder or handle covers IN the OVEN! They are NOT Safe to be placed into the oven!!
