My Pop of Color Basket crochet pattern is generously sized, but works up quickly! I finished my samples in just a few hours! This rainbow storage basket is simple to make using simple stitches and increases, then working in the round including for the handles. This large storage basket pattern can hold larger items or a whole lot of something! I like to use mine to hold large crochet projects on the go. But this basket is also the perfect size for decorative storage and organization around your home – think a couple throw blankets in the living room, guest towels in the bathroom or toys and blankets in the nursery! 

This one is definitely the perfect Netflix and chill type of project with lots of repetition, so whether you watch your fave movie on Netflix or Prime Video, or pick a new, bingeable audiobook, while working on your storage Basket! I am currently listening to 2 books – Dragonfly in Amber (Book 2 of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon) and Onyx Storm (Book 3 of the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros) on Audible. I’m currently watching The Pitt on Max, and will be catching up with Season 2 of The Last of Us (also on Max) once I finish. I highly recommend all of them!   💜

Best Yarn for Storage Baskets

The best yarn for crocheting storage baskets is a super bulky yarn. This type of yarn is thick enough to hold its shape, but it is also soft and is a pleasure to work with. If you don’t have the color you want in super bulky, you can also hold 2 strands of any medium worsted weight yarn together. I love working with Lion Brand Hometown USA Yarn for making sturdy crochet storage baskets. Plus Hometown has a ton of colors to choose from! Another great yarn to work when creating this storage basket crochet pattern is Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday Bulky  and  Premier Basix Super Bulky.

I will say this pattern is also a really great one for using up your scrap yarn! You only need a small amount of the accent colors, so if you grab a couple skeins of your main color, you can easily use of scraps you’ve got lying around – either super bulky, or hold 2 strands of worsted together. Talk about a fun basket and gorgeous way to repurpose those yarn scraps and bust your stash!

Here’s what you need to get started crafting this storage basket crochet pattern: 280 – 300 yards of the main color yarn for the Basket, 10 – 15 yards each of 5 accent colors or just grab your collection of scrap yarn. You will also need a N/P/15 – 10.0 mm crochet hook to create the Basket. ← I highly recommend these gorgeous beauties! My 100% go to hooks are Furls Streamline Metal Hooks – especially working with super bulky yarn – they just glide over the sttiches. I loved using mine to create this Rainbow Storage Basket Crochet Pattern!

For the white basket I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in New York White for the main color and Minneapolis Purple, Miami Seafoam, Pittsburgh Yellow, Syracuse Orange, and Honolulu Pink for the accents. For the purple basket I used Lion Brand Respun Thick & Quick in Cosmos for the main color and in Montpelier Peacock, Madison Mustard, Dallas Gray, Syracuse Orange, and Miami Seafoam. The accent colors for both storage baskets are all from my stash and some of them are discontinued, but there are some pretty stunning colors available in their place too! Whether your shop for new yarn or in your stash, I think you will have a LOT of fun choosing your colors for this project.

This crochet pattern is written in US English terms

Materials:

• YARN:  Lion Brand Hometown Super Bulky Weight 6 yarn, (100% Acrylic, 5 oz/142 g, 81 yd/74 m)  OR   Lion Brand Respun Thick & Quick Super Bulky Weight 6 yarn, (100% Recucled Polyester, 12 oz/340 g, 223 yds/204 m)

• Sample Colors: WHITE: New York White, Pink, Syracuse Orange, Pittsburgh Yellow, Green/Blue, Purple, PURPLE: Respun in Cosmos, Montpelier Peacock, Madison Mustard, Dallas Gray, Syracuse Orange, and Green
• Yardage: 300-360 yards

STORAGE BASKET FINISHED SIZE: 12” diameter x 10” tall (approx)

Experience Level: EASY

Storage Basket Crochet Pattern Gauge: 9 sc x 9 rows = 4” square

Gauge is NOT very important for this pattern.

Pattern Stitches:

Pattern Key:

st(s) – stitch(es)

sp(s) – space(s)

sl st – slip stitch

ch(s) – chain(s)

sc – single crochet

spike st – spike stitch (See Special Stitches)

yo – yarn over

FO – fasten off

Special Stitches: Magic Circle and Spike Stitch

Special Stitches:

Spike Stitch: Work sc into the same space as next stitch, but work the stitch 1 row below (worked over the stitch in the prevoius round) to create a spike.

STEP 1: Create a loop with yarn, place hook through the loop, yo and pull the yarn through the loop, keeping the loop open in a circle instead of pulling the yarn tight, ch 1.

STEP 2: Insert hook back in circle, yo and pull up a loop through the circle.

STEP 3: Yo again and pull through the 2 loops on the hook, 1 sc completed! Repeat Step 2 to create additional stitches. Hold stitches with one hand, gently pull yarn end with other hand to close the circle.

NOTES:

1. Read through the entire pattern first. 
2. This storage basket crochet pattern is worked in the round. 
3. Beginning chain does NOT as a stitch. Place the 1st stitch of each round in the same stitch as beginning chain.
4. Sl st does not count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated the pattern.
5. Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated. 
6. After Round 14, stitches are worked around a strand contrast yarn to give basket wall more support. Work around additional strand on Color A rounds ONLY, NOT on the accent color rounds.

USING N/P-15  10.0 mm hook

• Work in continuous rounds using a stitch marker Rounds 1-13.

Round 1: Make a Magic Circle with main basket color, ch 1, 6 sc in magic circle, (6 sc).

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around, (12 sc).

Round 3: [2 sc, sc,] 6 times, (18 sc).

Round 4: [2 sc, sc in next 2 sts,] 6 times, (24 sc).

Round 5: [2 sc, sc in next 3 sts,] 6 times, (30 sc). 

Round 6: [2 sc, sc in next 4 sts,] 6 times, (36 sc).
Round 7: [2 sc, sc in next 5 sts,] 6 times, (42 sc).

Round 8: [2 sc, sc in next 6 sts,] 6 times, (48 sc).

Round 9: [2 sc, sc in next 7 sts,] 6 times, (54 sc).

Round 38: Sl st in each st around, (90 sl st). FO and weave in ends. You’ve made a gorgeous Pop of Color Basket!
