Cattitude Mood Keychain

New Free Purse Charm Crochet Pattern!

Hello my friends! I have been working hard behind the scenes!! I am so excited to bring you another free crochet pattern that’s perfect for quick gifts and makes a great scrap buster pattern too. This quick and cute free purse charm crochet pattern is beginner friendly, so that you can make your own fun stocking stuffer, no matter your skill level. These adorable kitty bag charms look great on purses, backpacks, bum bags, belt loops or anywhere you like!

Best of all, the pattern uses beginner stitches, and you can finish the face however you want! Great at embroidery? Use those skills, prefer to use a felt face – that works well! Safety eyes and noses are perfect too, and you can even use fabric paint, googly eyes and more to give your kitty cat the proper “cattitude!”

Quick Crochet Keychain Pattern!

I just know you’re going to love this fun and adorable Cattitude Bag Charm crochet pattern! I got the idea to create a cat that can express different emotions or moods by those flippy stuffies my kids have that have happy or mad faces. But I really wanted to create a cute charm to hang from the kids backpacks as that’s something kids have really enjoyed as a way to express themselves. But these are not just for kids – they’re cute and sassy and perfect to hang on your handbag too! We can’t let the kids have all the fun!

What if you’re a beginner crocheter? I gotchu! This Cattitude Free Purse Charm Crochet Pattern provides step-by-step instructions, teaches how to crochet 2 pieces together, and then work the ears on to the holes you created! Unless you decide to embroider the cat faces, this pattern is 100% No-Sew too! Plus it’s a free crochet pattern, and it looks amazing in any different colors you like, be they true to life or a colorful fantasy hue!

Why You Need to Make the Cattitude Bag Charm Pattern!

Well for lots of reasons, here ya go! Make for yourself because: You like cats. You like to express yourself. Your mood changes frequently. You have a sense of humor. You like cute things on your bag/backpack/etc.

Make for someone else because: You need a gift for a kid, or tween, or teen or fun adult. You need a stocking stuffer or quick gift. You need a last minute gift. You need a new driver or housewarming gift. You want to make something fun for a teacher or coworker. You love making handmade gifts for party favors. Your kids love cats. Your kids have attitudes. Your kids are funny and cool so you know they’d like this!

Make to sell for your markets or Etsy shop: You need quick items to stock your table. You need inexpensive impulse buy items. You know bag charms and keychains are popular right now. You’re selling at a humane society or animal related event. You’re selling at an event where kids items are popular. These are more fun than chapstick holders. Your customers are cool like you! 😉

ADD CAT FACE: (2 Sides)

Visual examples and basic instructions are given for embroidering faces. Feel free to use any skills or tools at your disposal like: fabric paint, puffy paint, makeup, felt pieces, safety eyes and noses, googly eyes, etc.

*** PLEASE NOTE: When adding the face to head with working yarn the yarn tail should be on the bottom left if you’re a righty and bottom right if you’re lefty!!

FACE POSITIONING:

Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to pull your stitches out and try again. I redid mine a few times before I was happy with them. Use the photos as a guide, but do your own thing!

STEP 1: Start with the nose. I used pink yarn. Center the nose at the bottom part of Round 1. Stitch the nose using a satin stitch over Round 1 to the lower part of Round 2.

STEP 2: Place eyes at the upper part of Round 3, with about 1-2 sts between them. Use a satin stitch, french knot, and/or running/back stitch to create the eyes.

STEP 3: Add the mouth centered, just below the nose. Use a running/back stitch.

STEP 4: Add whiskers on the outer edges over Rounds 1-3 or 2-4, framing the nose and angled so that the outer edges become further apart. Use a running stitch.

FINISHING: Because the ends will be contained inside, I DO NOT weave in the ends! I tied each section off very securely with a triple square knot and trimmed the ends to about an inch.

PAIRED FACE IDEAS:

Happy + Grumpy

Sleepy + Mischievous

Laughing + Cute

Confused + Sad

USING E/4 3.5 mm  -OR-  F/5 3.75 MM HOOK

STITCH CAT TOGETHER:

STEP 1: Place both sides of the cat together, faces of both facing out. Beginning with the working yarn from the 2nd head begin to sc through both loops of both heads. Ch 1, sc in next 23 sts.

If the positioning is off for your ear holes, you can skip 1-2 of stitches in step 1 and add them back in step 3, or vice versa.

STEP 2: Now we will leave an opening to stitch the first ear. Sl st in the next 4 sts of one of the heads, skipping the next 4 sts on the other head. Then bring both sides back together and working through both again, sc in next 8 sts. Now we will leave a second opening to stitch the other ear. Sl st in the next 4 sts of one of the heads, skipping the next 4 sts on the other head.

STEP 3: Then bring both sides back together and working through both again, sc in last 7 sts, invisible join, (38 sc, 2 4-st openings). FO and weave in the ends. Continue with cat ears.

USING E/4 3.5 mm  -OR-  F/5 3.75 MM HOOK

ADD CAT EARS: (2 Ears)

Lightly stuff the head before adding ears. I did not stuff my ears, but you are welcome to stuff yours if you like.

Round 1: Join yarn to any space in the ear opening with a sl st and ch 1, work 10 sc evenly around ear opening, working in sts and sides of sts, sl st to join, (10 sc.)

Round 2: Ch 1, [skip next st, sc in next 4 sts,] 2 times, sl st to join, (8 sc).

Round 3: Ch 1, [skip next st, sc in next 3 sts,] 2 times, sl st to join, (6 sc).

Round 4: Ch 1, [skip next st, sc in next 2 sts,] 2 times, do not join, (4 sc).

Round 4: Work a single crochet across any 2 of the remaining 4 sts to close the opening and give ear a peak (1 sc). FO and leave a long tail. Use the yarn tail to close up any remaining opening and weave in the ends.

REPEAT FOR THE SECOND EAR!

ADD THE CLIP/CORD:

Adding Hardware to your Cat:

  • Insert a split jump ring through the central stitch between the ears. Close the ring securely and attach to the chain or ring of your hardware. Add any additional hardware like a keyring and/or bag clip.

Adding a Cord to your Cat:

  • If you prefer you can crochet a looped cord to secure the cat head, instead of using a keyring or other hardware.
  • Join yarn to head with a sl st, through the central stitch between the ears. Ch 45, skip the first 30 chs, sl st in the last 15 to form a loop. FO and weave in the ends.
  • You can adjust the length that the charm hangs by increasing or decreasing the number chains in the cord, or change the size of the loop by adjusting the number of skipped stitches in the loop.
  • To hang your charm, wrap the cord, loop end first around a strap or handle of the bag, then insert the cat head through the loop and pull tight to secure!
