Which Yarn is Best for Your Crochet Cup Cozy?

Cotton and acrylic yarns each offer unique advantages for crochet coffee cozies.

Cotton yarn is naturally absorbent, making it ideal for preventing condensation and keeping hands dry. Its breathability also helps regulate temperature, keeping hot drinks warmer and cold drinks cooler. However, cotton may shrink or lose shape over time.

My Choice: Paintbox Cotton Aran 4 Weight yarn

Machine washable Acrylic yarn, on the other hand, is easy clean, durable, and retains its shape well. It’s a great option for busy lifestyles. While it doesn’t absorb moisture as effectively as cotton, it offers convenience and longevity.

My Choice: Red Heart Super Saver Ombres Worsted Weight yarn

Ultimately, the best yarn choice depends on your personal preferences and priorities.

SPECIAL Stitches Placement GUIDE:

(LARGE: Round 5/HANDLED: Row 6/7)

Consider the stitch placement based on each 5 stitch group from the prior row/round. Work st in first dc, skip next dc, 3 sts in ch-1 sp, skip next dc, st in last dc. This keeps the appearance of the round/row consistent with the other rounds having the 5 stitch groups.

Stitches are worked where arrows indicate, single arrow for single stitches, 3 arrow where the 3 lhdc / lsc are worked in the ch-1 space. (See Photos below).

STEP 1: Ch 2, insert hook in 1st ch, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yo and pull through 1st loop on hook, yo and pull through both loops on hook. 1 fsc.

STEP 2: Working in the two loops on top, (this is your “foundation chain”), insert your hook, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yo and pull through 1st loop on hook, yo and pull through both loops on hook. 2 fsc.

STEP 3: Insert hook into the next “stitch”, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yo and pull through 1st loop on hook, yo and pull through both loops on hook. 3 fsc.

STEP 4: Repeat Step 3 until you have completed the number of stitches called for in your beginning chain. Sl st the 1st and last sts together, being careful not to twist your work. Keep in mind that the top of your row is where the hook is located. If desired, use the yarn tail to stitch the small gap where the 1st and last st were joined.
