Ways to Use Your Crochet Christmas Gnomes

Here are some ideas for showing them off:

  • Start a tomten collection tradition by making a new one each year in different colors
  • Line them up on your mantel or bookshelf for a super cute gnomey display
  • Gift them to everyone you know (they’re that quick to make!)
  • Add them to holiday wreaths or garlands
  • Use them as bowl fillers mixed with greenery and pinecones
  • Pop them in your window to make passers by smile
  • Create a sweet nordic gnome display on a tiered tray with candles and winter greenery
  • Decorate your whole tree with a collection of mini crochet christmas gnome ornaments in different colors
  • Make mini versions as gift toppers

Honestly, these little guys work anywhere you want to add some handmade Christmas magic. Plus, they’re sturdy enough that kids can play with them without you stressing about damage.

Crochet an Adorable Christmas Gnome!

Here’s the thing about this free crochet gnome pattern, it’s genuinely fun to make. I know that amigurumi patterns can sometimes feel like homework, but this one? It’s relaxing. The repetitive rounds are soothing, and watching your gnome take shape is super satisfying.

Fair warning: making the Jule Tomten Amigurumi is kinda addictive! I made like six last weekend while listening to a murder mystery podcast, and I regret nothing. 😎

The pattern is beginner-friendly but interesting enough that experienced crocheters won’t get bored. Got a spare evening? Grab some yarn and crochet a gnome hat, add a beard, stuff that body, and boom – you’ve got yourself an adorable ornament or mantle piece.

TBH, I love small projects like this because you can work on them anywhere. Waiting at the dentist? Bring your Nordic gnome. Watching TV? Settle in and crochet away. These projects are portable, easy to pick up and put down, and super forgiving if you need to frog a few stitches.

I love to work on a project like this adorable free crochet gnome pattern while I relax in the evenings. This is the perfect Netflix and chill (aka. CROCHET) project that you can work on and binge watch your fave show or that new movie on Amazon Prime! I also love to listen to a fun podcast or audiobook while I crochet too, depends on my mood! HBU? 😎 The free crochet Scandinavian gnome pattern is easy to make, simple to understand, and the stitches are repetitive enough to be the perfect crochet and chill project.

Need a little extra help with the stitches? The pattern includes photo tutorials to guide you every step of the way, plus you can always reach out if you have questions. And if you’re new to crochet, don’t worry — my Learn to Crochet with my fun Crochet Tutorials are a great place to start.

USING E/4 3.5 mm  or  F/5 3.75 mm Hook

FINISHING TOMTEN GNOME:

STITCH BEARD:

  • Line bottom of the Beard up with body at Round 7 (just above the front loops of Round 6). Slip stitches from Round 3 should be at the top of the beard. The opening (for the nose) should line up around Rounds 15-17 but this does not need to be exact.
  • Stitch the beard to the Body around the outside using the yarn tails. Weave in ends.

STITCH NOSE:

  • Place Nose in the middle of the opening in the beard.
  • Stitch the nose to the body/beard using the yarn tails. Weave in ends.

STITCH HAT:

  • Place the Hat on top of the body, so that the hat just covers to top of the Nose, fitting the hat snuggly down around the back of the body. Back of the hat should be placed further down. I stitched the back of my hat at the back of the body around Round 11.
  • Stitch the hat to the Body using the yarn tail. Weave in ends.
  • OPTIONAL: If you want to curl the top of your hat, roll down the top inch or so of the hat toward the back of the body and use yarn to stitch it into place.
