Free Crochet Christmas Tree Ornament Pattern

TOADSTOOL TIDINGS ORNAMENT:

Pattern Directions:

USING  US H-8 5.0 mm Hook

TOADSTOOL STEM:

  • Work in continuous rounds

Round 1: Make a Magic Circle with Stem Color. Ch 1, 6 sc in magic circle, do not join (6 sc). Alternatively, you can ch 2 and work into 2nd ch from hook.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st, sl st in same sp as as last st to join, (12 sc).

Round 3: Work in BLO this round only. Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, do not join, (12 sc).

Round 4: [Sc2tog, sc,] 4 times, (8 sc).

Rounds 5-12: Sc in each st around, (8 sc, 8 rounds). Sl st in same sp as as last st to join.

Stop here and lightly stuff the stem of the Mushroom.

GILLS:

Round 13: (Ch 3 (counts as 1st tr) and 2 tr in same sp), 3 tr in each st around, join with sl st to top of ch-3 , (24 tr). FO (ONLY if changing color.) Continue with Mushroom Cap.

USING  US H-8 5.0 mm Hook

MUSHROOM CAP:

  • Attach Cap Color at first st of previous round or continue with working color.

Round 14: Work in BLO this round only. Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st, do NOT join, (24 sc).

Round 15-16: Sc in each st, (24 sc, 2 rounds).

Round 17: [Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts,] 6 times, (18 sc).

Stop here and place a small amount of stuffing at the top of the stem, pushed into the stem but sticking up slightly into the cap area for stuffing. (See photos below).

Round 18: [Sc2tog, sc in next st,] 6 times, (12 sc).

Round 19: Sc2tog 6 times, (6 sc).

FO and leave a long tail. Do NOT stuff Mushroom cap further.

FINISHING MUSHROOM: Weave the yarn end through the last round a couple of times to close up the hole. Do not break yarn. Carefully run the needle between the 2 layers of the Mushroom cap. Place several stitches near the edge, stitching the layers together to secure the cap. I made about 12 stitches, placed between R15-16, and through the top of the treble crochets of R13. FO and weave in end.

USING H-8 5.0 MM HOOK

ORNAMENT HANGER:

  • Cut a length of yarn or ribbon of your choice about 10-15 inches in length. Weave it through the top center of the mushroom cap and tie to secure.
  • Alternatively, you can use a finer yarn or cord to chain 25-30. Leave a length at both ends, insert one end into the cap and tie to secure.

USING E/4 3.5 – G/6 4.25 MM HOOK

MUSHROOM SPOTS:

  • Choose several buttons or sequins (or both, or any other embellishment you like) and use a needle and thread to sew them around the mushroom cap as you see fit.
  • Alternatively, you can use a finer yarn to hand embroider spots. I recommend using a French Knot or Satin Stitch to create the embroidered spots.

A suggested number range is given per size. Make as many or few spots as you’d like using a yarn weight of 3-4 (DK/Light or Worsted/Aran) and E/4 – G/6 (3.5 mm – 4.25 mm) hook.

SMALL SPOTS: (Make 4-5)

Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, ch 1, 6 sc in magic circle, sl st to join, (6 sc). FO and leave a long tail to stitch to cap.

MEDIUM SPOTS: (Make 2-3)

Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, ch 1, 8 hdc in magic circle, sl st to join, (8 hdc). FO and leave a long tail to stitch to cap.
