This free granny square crochet pattern includes two ways to wear it and simple steps that beginners can follow, making it a fun project for any maker who loves a classic granny square vibe.
Happy hooking!

A Free Granny Square Crochet Pattern for Beginners
This project is beginner‑friendly, so even if you’re new to granny squares, you’ll find it approachable. The free granny square pattern uses basic stitches and step‑by‑step instructions to guide you through every part of the hip pouch. With only a few squares to make and assemble, it’s a great first project for learning color changes and simple joining techniques.
The Granny’s Festival Belt Pouch pattern has 3 fun finishing options available. The finished pouch is lined to keep everything safely stored, so you won’t lose smaller items like coins or cards. It can be worn as a belt bag, bum bag or classic handbag. This adorable granny pouch works beautifully as a clutch or even a small wallet for on‑the‑go.
Why You’ll Love This Granny Square Belt Pouch
Granny’s Festival Belt Pouch is perfect for anyone who wants a mix of fun style and practicality. The granny square patterns are great for stashbusting, and the small size makes it ideal for carrying just the essentials — like your phone, keys, and cash — without feeling weighed down. Its hands‑free design means you can enjoy a festival, market, or quick errands without juggling a bag on your shoulder.
It’s also great for busy moms who never seem to have enough hands and teens who want something light but still big enough for their must‑haves. The pouch fits comfortably around the waist, stays secure while you move, and is just as handy for everyday use as it is for special events. This is the kind of project that looks cute but works hard, making it a favorite for anyone who loves practical makes and retro feel crochet accessories.
Three Ways to Wear Your Granny Square Hip Bag
This free crochet pattern is easy to change up and wear how you like. Slide it onto a belt you already own for a neat look, add a purse strap for an easy solution, or use the ties included in the pattern to wrap it around your waist. You can even skip the straps and turn it into a small clutch or pouch for keeping things organized in a bigger bag. I love a versatile pattern!
It only takes a 6 granny squares, so it’s great for using scrap yarn or leftover bits from other projects. Try bright festival colors, soft neutrals, or even a rainbow mix — there’s no wrong choice. Every version feels fresh, which makes this a pattern you’ll want to make again and again for yourself or as a quick gift.
What I’m Watching & Listening To (While I Crochet)
I love to binge a series on Prime and/or book on Audible while I Crochet. I know that many of y’all do too! The simple, repetitive stitches of this adorable sea turtle amigurumi mean you can get into a rhythm and enjoy crocheting, while still leaving plenty of attention for that new show you’ve been dying to see. Plus, this no-sew amigurumi sea turtle is a relatively quick project, so you can easily finish your own in a few days time!
Right now, I’m obsessed with anything dystopian and/or fantasy, as always.
I’m really enjoying watching Handmaid’s Tale and planning to start watching Wheel of Time once I’ve finished that. I’ve seen the first 2 seasons, so that will be a rewatch for me before catching the third season too! And on Audible, I’m listening to Dragonfly in Amber the second book in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and I’m also listening to The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo. I’ve read almost every book she’s written and they do not disappoint!
What are you watching and listening to these days? Tell me in the comments! 🧶💜

Step 2: Lay your rectangle the long way, right side up. Fold up one pair of squares to form the pouch. Stitch up the 2 sides, right sides are together, then turn the pouch right side out.
ATTACHING LINER:
Step 1: Place the liner inside the pouch, making sure the top row of the liner is at the same level as the top of the pouch opening. Whip stitch the 2 layers together, working in the BLO of the outer pouch and the FLO of the liner.
ADDING WAIST TIE:
Make sure to add waist ties before stitching the belt loop in place.
OPTION 1: Add the waist tie to your finished pouch by weaving it through the spaces of the 3rd round of the squares, near the top edge of the back of the pouch.
OPTION 2: Stitch the waist tie to your finished pouch at the 3rd round of the squares, near the top edge of the back of the pouch.
ADDING BELT LOOP:
Make sure to add waist ties before stitching the belt loop in place.
Step 1: Position the loop in the center of the back of the pouch so that the bottom (wide side) is even with the middle of the squares. The top should come a little over the top of the pouch.
Step 2: Stitch the bottom of the belt loop at the middle of the squares. Then stitch the top of the belt loop just below the top of the pouch, which will leave a small opening for threading the belt through the loop. Weave in ends.
OPTIONAL BUTTON LOOP: Ch 8, FO, stitch to center of top flap to form button loop. Stitch 1” button at bottom center of pouch. Your Granny’s Festival Belt Pouch is complete! Add your phone, keys, and cash and you are ready to enjoy the festival or other outdoor venue hands free!
OPTIONAL PURSE STRAP: This is the easiest way to finish your bag! Order a purse strap from the retailer of your choice 👉 This is the one I got! 👈 All you need to do is clip the straps to either edge of the bag, right at the top. Then adjust the slider to fit and you’ve got a cute bgranny square bum bag!
