Thin Yarn = Happy Pages
When it comes to making bookmarks, flatter and thinner is better. You want something that marks your place without warping or damaging the pages, especially if it’s a well-loved or borrowed book. For that reason, I recommend using lighter weight yarns like sport, DK, or even fingering weight cotton for the best results. Cotton is ideal because it’s smooth, sturdy, and won’t fuzz up over time. Acrylic can work too, as long as it’s not too bulky — just avoid plush yarns or anything that feels too thick.
If you don’t have cotton on hand, try a smooth acrylic or bamboo blend. Just make sure it’s lightweight and non-stretchy so your bookmark stays flat and page-friendly. A smaller hook will also help keep your stitches tight and your bookmark neat and flat.

The Best Yarn for this Bookmark Crochet Pattern!
Selecting the perfect yarn for your Hopscotch Bookmark Crochet Pattern is essential for both functionality and sturdiness. Lightweight (sport 2 or dk 3) yarn, especially cotton, is my recommendation for ease of use and durability. It’s sturdy, will last without pilling, and is strong enough to hold its shape without stretching. It’s also lightweight, making it a practical option for use as a bookmark without warping the pages.
The yarn I selected for this free bookmark crochet pattern is called King Cole Cottonsoft. It was sent to me as part of the Brand Ambassador program with King Cole Yarn.
Cottonoft DK is a soft and durable cotton yarn. This yarn offers beautiful stitch definition and is truly a pleasure to work with! It is durable and comes in a stunning range of colors from brights, to pastels, to neutrals – currently 52 shades to choose from.
Find Cottonsoft DK in your local yarn shop here.
Order Cottonoft DK online from LoveCrafts here.

Finishing Bookmark:
ADD FRINGE:
Step 1: Cut 16 or 24 strands of yarn about 6 inches long.
Step 2: Insert hook upward through any of the stitches on the top of the bookmark. Place the center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it through the stitch creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten. Repeat for each of the remaining 7 or 11 yarn strands.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for the 8 or 12 strands on the bottom of the bookmark.
Step 4: Then trim the ends evenly. My ends are about 2 inches long.
ADD TASSEL:
Step 1: Cut 6 strands of yarn about 12 inches long.
Step 2: Insert hook upward through any of the 6 stitches on the top of the bookmark. Place the center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it through the stitch creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for each of the 5 yarn strands, placing one in each of the 6 stitches. Step 4: Group strands into 3 groups of 4, and braid about 2 inches.
Step 5: Tie off the ends in one of 2 ways. 1) Tie the end in single overhand knot, leaving the braid as long or short as you like. -OR- 2) Cut an additional length of yarn 4-6 inches. Lay the yarn under the end of the braid and tie a tight double (square) knot around the braid.
Step 6: Trim the ends evenly. My braid is about 1.5 inches and tassel and knot are about 2 inches together. Adjust yours as you like.
