Calliope Earbud Pouch – Free Pattern

This free crochet earbud case pattern is a quick little make for anyone who keeps losing their wireless earphones in the bottom of a bag. Ask me how I know. 😅

The Calliope Keychain Earbud Pouch starts with one crochet square, then folds into a small envelope pouch with a button closure. Add a swivel clasp and you’ve got a cute little earbud keychain pouch you can clip to your keys, purse, backpack, gym bag, or project bag.

It’s also a handy mini crochet pouch pattern for other tiny things, like stitch markers, coins, lip balm, guitar picks, SD cards, or dice. Did I mention that it’s the perfect fit for a gift card too? Instant gift! Yep, I know that’s awesome, but here’s best part! You can make it with scraps from your yarn basket! Y’all are gonna love this little project, cuz it’s easy and works up fast and anyone you gift it too will use it! I always prefer to make gifts that’ll get used, don’t you?

Happy Hooking, my friends! 💜

About the Calliope Keychain Pouch

The Calliope Keychain Pouch is a small crochet pouch made from one Calliope granny square. The finished square is folded corner to center, then seamed along the sides to create an envelope shape. A button keeps the flap closed, and a keychain clasp makes it easy to carry. Tick, tick, ticking all the boxes 👍

This design is part of my Calliope crochet pattern collection. The same mandala style square has been used for coasters, a  washcloth, a wine bottle holder, an amigurumi sea turtle, and other small makes. I love when one motif can do a whole lot of work, and this little pouch is a great example!

Because free crochet earbud case pattern starts flat, it’s much easier than shaping a tiny bag from scratch. No tiny rounds. No mystery math. Just one square, a clever fold, and a cute little finish.

Why Your Earbuds Need Their Own Pouch

Bare earbud cases take a beating rattling around with keys, coins, and whatever else lives in your bag. This crochet earbud case adds a soft layer between that case and everything solid or sharp floating around in your bag! So, the lid stops getting scratched, the buttons quit getting bumped, and they don’t pop open and drain your battery… This clever little pouch even works for wired earbuds like my current fave Beats Flex!

Clipping it to a keychain also means it’s never buried at the bottom anymore. You always know right where it is, and you’re not doing the frantic bag dig at the gym door. You can clip it to the inside of a bag if you’re worried about it falling off, but I’ve had mine clipped to my crossbody bag for months and it’s going strong with zero problems and so easy to find and use!

Best Yarn for a Crochet Earbud Case

I don’t know about y’all, but cotton yarn is my first pick for this free crochet earbud case pattern. Cotton holds the fold nicely and gives the pouch a firmer feel. It also handles daily use better than softer yarns that may stretch out or pill up with keys and bag clutter.

Acrylic can work too, especially if you’re using what you already have. Just keep in mind that acrylic tends to get fuzzier over time. If you want a pouch that holds up to everyday use, cotton is a safer bet.

This is also a great scrap yarn crochet pattern. Each color round uses only a small amount of yarn, so it is an easy way to use up leftovers from bigger projects. You can match your colors to your earbud case, your bag, your keys, or just pick the bits that are already sitting in your scrap basket.

An Easy Gift You Can Personalize

One of my favorite things about this crochet earbud case is how easy it is to make it feel personal. Match the colors to someone’s favorite team, their car, or the tote they carry every day. Swap the plain button for a novelty one shaped like a heart, a star, or their initial. I love to use the fun buttons that my friend Kathy from Kathy’s Kozies sells in her Etsy shop! Add a fun tassel or a tiny charm to the clasp and it’s extra.

Same quick pattern, but now it looks like you planned it just for them, which is exactly the kind of handmade gift people actually hang onto.

Here’s who’s getting one from me this year:

  • Teachers
  • Coaches
  • Personal trainer at the gym
  • Bus drivers
  • Coworkers and your work Secret Santa
  • Teens and tweens
  • College kids heading back to the dorm
  • Book club friends
  • The neighbor who waters your plants
  • Stocking stuffers for the whole family

Remember these are perfect to stuff with a gift card for a double duty gift!!

What Can You Keep in a Mini Crochet Pouch?

This little keychain pouch was designed for wired earbuds or wireless earphones, but it can hold plenty of other smaller items too. I love a pattern that earns its keep.

Try using your Calliope pouch for a gift card, credit cards or cash, lip balm, mini lotion, hand sanitizer, your keys, a mini tarot deck, tapestry needles or a custom mini tin with stitch markers! You could also clip one inside a diaper bag, school bag, craft tote, or travel bag.

It makes a sweet little gift for teens, teachers, coworkers, book club friends, and anyone who likes useful handmade things. Add a pair of earbuds, a gift card, or a few stitch markers inside and you have an easy gift that’s going to be loved by just about anyone, without taking a week to make.

How One Square Becomes an Earbud Keychain Pouch

This is the fun little trick that makes the pouch work.

Once the Calliope square is finished and blocked, lay it flat with the wrong side facing up. Fold the corners in toward the center, like an envelope. The side corners become the sides of the pouch, the bottom corner becomes the base, and the top corner becomes the flap.

After that, you seam the folded edges together and leave the top flap free. The button sits under the flap so it closes over the front. Add your clasp to one corner, and the pouch is ready to clip onto your keys or bag.

Before you seam everything closed, slide your wireless earphones case inside and check the fit. Earbud cases come in different shapes, and this quick test will save you from having to undo seams later. Before you seam everything closed, slide your wireless earphones case inside and check the fit. Earbud cases come in different shapes, and this quick test will save you from having to undo seams later. I created this case to fit most buds… I alternate between my workhorse Beats Flex and a couple different sets of in ear and open ear buds. I made sure this case would fit any of those and my testers found success for theirs too!

NOTES:

  1. Read through the entire pattern first.
  2. Pattern is worked in the round. For seamless color changes, pull the next color through on the final yarn over (yo) of the round.
  3. Beginning chain does not count as a stitch. First stitch of each round should be placed in the same stitch as the beginning chain.
  4. Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
  5. Place/work all stitches between ( and ) in the same stitch.
  6. Colors can be carried between rounds if you’re using the same color again, just drop the yarn after the round is complete and pick it back up when you’re ready to use it. You can also cut the yarn after each round and weave in ends if you prefer a neater back.
  7. Blocking your finished pouch is strongly recommended.
  8. This pattern is designed for earbuds, but is also perfect for gift cards or cash.

Crochet Earbud Case Pattern FAQ

Will this crochet pouch fit MY wireless earphones?

It should fit many standard wireless earphones cases, but sizes can vary. Before seaming, fold the square around your case and check that the flap closes nicely. If your case is larger, you can use a slightly bigger hook, thicker yarn, or add an extra round to the square.

Is this a beginner-friendly crochet pouch pattern?

Yes, this pouch is friendly for confident beginners. The main part is one flat square, so there is no tricky bag shaping. The finishing steps are simple too: fold, seam, add a button, and attach the clasp.

Can I wash this crochet earbud case?

Most cotton crochet pouches can be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. If your pouch needs a deeper clean, check your yarn label first. Remove the earphones and any items from the pouch before washing, and let it dry fully before using it again.

Why does this crochet earbud case use a button flap instead of a drawstring?

How will you use it? A drawstring needs two hands and a bit of fiddling every time. A flap flips open with one thumb while your keys are in your other hand. The button also keeps the flap from flopping open in your bag, so your earbuds stay put.

Can I make this crochet earbud case to sell at craft markets?

Yes! Each pouch takes only and hour or so to make and just a little yarn, so they’re cheap to batch and an easy impulse buy. You may sell your finished items at craft markets or online. Linking to my pattern if you are selling online is very much appreciated. Please don’t share or resell the pattern itself, or alter and claim it as your own.
