The Perfect Crochet Ear Warmer for Fall & Winter
I love the cold! I mean, I must if I live in Minnesota! But at the same time I love to warm. So crochet is pretty much the perfect hobby to make cozy handmade accessories to snuggle up in. That’s how the Hopscotch Winter Ear Warmer first came about! But I wanted to make a crochet headband that was perfect for any occasion. Which is why I’ve decided to offer four stylish variations, creating a 4-in-1 pattern.
Also, you’ll discover this free pattern is a great stash buster and a quick market make for fall and winter! And because there are 4 different size options, you can whip up a quick lastminute gift for just about anyone!
Here’s how I think of the different style finishes. Although I’m not your typical fashionista! So, I’d love you to comment with your own thoughts!
- Cinched – A soft, gathered look that adds a classic, feminine touch—great for everyday wear or gifting. This one is a favorite with the kiddos – it looks a little like a cute bow.
- Mobius – A seamless infinity twist, perfect for a polished, elegant style that pairs well with winter coats. Wear the twist in the front or back – it’s up to you!
- Twisted – A modern crossover design that adds texture and interest, ideal for casual outfits and craft fairs.
- Simple – A clean, no-fuss option for layering on chilly mornings or making in bulk for markets. This one is a favorite with my tween and teenage sons and hubby too!

FINISHING FREE CROCHET HEADBAND PATTERN:
FINISHING EAR WARMER:
SIMPLE FINISH: Cut yarn leaving a 12-15 inch tail. Bring short ends of headband together, using yarn tail and needle, whip stitch ends together to join. Weave in ends, turn seam to the inside. Wear the seam in the back.
CINCHED FINISH: Cut yarn leaving a 3-4 foot tail. Bring short ends of headband together, using yarn tail and needle, whip stitch ends together to join. Turn seam to the inside. Pinch the seam and use the long tail to wrap tightly around the Ear Warmer to create the cinch, stopping when you have about 6 inches left. Tie off and weave in ends. Wear the cinched seam in the front or back to your preference.
MÖBIUS TWIST FINISH: Cut yarn leaving a 12-15 inch tail. Bring short ends of headband together, and turn one side over so there is a single twist in the headband. Using yarn tail and needle, whip stitch ends together to join. Weave in ends, turn seam to the inside. Wear the möbius twist in the front or back to your preference.
TWISTED FINISH: FO leaving a 12-15 inch tail. Fold both ends in half the short way, facing toward the center of the warmer. Fold Ear Warmer in half the long way and bring the short ends together. Sandwich the ends together so that the two v-shaped ends overlap, and stitch together, making sure to go through all 4 layers, from one edge to the other. Weave in ends. Turn headband right side out, so the seam is on the inside and twist is on the outside. Wear the twist in the front or back to your preference.
