Father’s Day Gift Ideas – Toiletry Bag!
When I first learned about linked stitches, I knew just what I wanted to do with them – create a sturdy crochet bag that didn’t need a liner! Don’t get me wrong, I really like making liners for crochet book sleeves, handbags, and more, but sometimes you don’t want to take the extra step. Sometimes you don’t need the padding, you just need a sturdy fabric. Here we are! So I first designed my Calliope Crossbody Boho Bag using linked stitches. It turned out fabulous and liner free!
Dads and guys in general are pretty fuss-free, so I knew I needed to create a lining free bag for our guys. Linked stitches to the rescue! You can create a lovely boxy toiletry bag for your best guy using this free dopp kit pattern and it doesn’t need a liner. Just yarn and a zipper and you!
Yes, due to the nature of this bag there will be sewing involved. In fact, this project was inspired by my love of sewing and my desire to bring more hybrid crochet and sewing projects into the world. If you sew you can make this project and use both of your skill sets. What if you don’t sew? We’re going to teach you some basics, right here, right now. Most of the sewing is just like you might use in any other crochet project, but for the zipper I’ve included sewing instructions for hand and machine sewing – you get to pick!
Not sure how to sew in a zipper? Check out my detailed written instructions and photo tutorials too! What if you need a bit more – I’ve got an entire helpful blog post all about sewing a zipper into a bag! The post gives you step by step photos and also has video tutorial you can use as a reference, you’ve got this! 💪 Check out the Zipper Sewing Post HERE!

Make a Men’s Crochet Toiletry Bag!
Before we jump into creating this free dopp kit pattern, you want to make sure you have everything you need! For crocheting the toiletry bag you will need an F/5 3.75 mm hook and dk/light yarn (I recommend a stiff cotton or cotton blend, but you can also acrylic or wool). Once the bag piece is created you will need a 12 inch zipper, a needle suitable for hand sewing or a sewing machine, thread in a color that matches or complements your bag, a tapestry needle for yarn, scissors, and pins or sewing clips. Because we will be hand sewing, you might also want a thimble to protect your fingers.
If you want to buy any of these handy supplies online before you dive into this beginner tutorial, here’s my favorite recommendations for you!
DK/Light 3 yarn (I used CottonSmooth mercerized cotton from King Cole)
US F/5 3.75 mm Hook (I adore the Metal Streamline Hooks from Furls!)
12 inch non-separating Zipper (This is the one I used – my fave are YKK from ZipIt on Etsy!)
Scissors (I love these – portable and sharp!)
Pins (Classic Straight pin – these work well for blocking too!)
Or Sewing Clips (← These are my favorite trick – no poked fingers!)
Locking Stitch Markers (These work well in place of pins too!)
Tapestry Needle (for sewing crochet pieces and weaving in ends)
Need some help with the stitches? Check out my Learn to Crochet Series and my fun Crochet Tutorials! You can also reach out at any time! I am more than happy to help you with any questions you may have!
The Best Yarn for this Free Dopp Kit Pattern!
Selecting the perfect yarn for your men’s crochet toiletry bag is essential for occasional washability, functionality and sturdiness. Cotton yarn, especially mercerized, is my recommendation for ease of use and durability. It’s sturdy, will last without pilling, and is stiff enough to hold its shape without stretching. It’s also durable and machine-washable, making it a practical option for frequent use.
The yarn I selected for this free Dopp Kit Pattern is called King Cole CottonSmooth. It was sent to me as part of the Brand Ambassador program with King Cole Yarn.
CottonSmooth DK is a shiny and durable mercerized cotton yarn. This yarn offers great stitch definition and is a pleasure to work with! It is durable and comes in a nice range of colors – currently 14 shades to choose from.
Find CottonSmooth DK in your local yarn shop here.
Order CottonSmooth DK online from LoveCrafts here.
CottonSmooth DK is a soft, long wearing yarn that is perfect for garments, accessories, bags and more.
CottonSmooth DK:
- 100% Mercerized Cotton
- 218 yds/200 m, 3.5 oz/100 g
- Recommended hook/needle size is 4 mm/US 6

Rows 2-12: Ch 1 (optional – see TIP above), sc in each st, turn, (6 sc, 11 rows). FO and leave a 15 inch tail. Weave in beginning end. Set aside and continue with Finishing Instructions below
FINISHING TOILETRY BAG:
USING 12 inch non-separating Zipper
ADD THE ZIPPER:
Step 1: Unzip zipper and line up the zipper with Row 1 or Row 43, leaving a small (.25 inch) gap between the teeth and the edge of the bag to prevent teeth from snagging. Use several pins or sewing clips to hold the zipper in place. You may need to stretch the row a small amount to make sure that the row ends .5 inch beyond the ends of the zipper teeth, on each side. Continue with Hand or Machine Sewing Directions below.
HAND SEWING ZIPPER:
Step 2: With needle and a length of matching thread about 30-36 inches, begin by creating a knot at the end of your thread and begin sewing from inside out (so the knot is on the inside of bag and zipper), beginning at either end of the row, about .5 inches beyond beginning of zipper teeth.
Step 3: Use a running stitch and work through zipper tape + bag with each stitch, working inside to outside, then outside to inside. I place my stitches just under the top loops of the row, and about .25 inch below the zipper teeth. Make small, even stitches so that the zipper is sturdily attached to the bag. When you’ve reached the end of the row, working .5 inches past end of teeth, knot off the end of the thread inside the bag and zipper, and trim ends.
Step 4: Now you will sew the other side of the zipper to the other end of the bag. Pin or clip the zipper to the row at the other end, leaving a small (.25 inch) gap between the teeth and the edge of the bag. Again, if needed stretch the row a small amount to make sure that the row ends .5 inch beyond the ends of the zipper teeth, on each side.
Step 5: Repeat Steps 2-3 to stitch the zipper in place on the other side. Continue with Sewing Bag ends together below.
USING 12 inch non-separating Zipper
MACHINE SEWING ZIPPER:
Step 2: Attach zipper foot to machine, making note of which side you’ll be sewing on first, and move the foot accordingly. Baste the zipper to the bag using a long running stitch before you begin sewing. This will make it easier to sew the zipper in place.
Step 3: Start sewing from the connected portion of the zipper working forward, about .5 inches beyond teeth and connector. Move the zipper pull an inch away from the end to make it easier to begin sewing. Once you’ve worked past the beginning move the pull back to the end before continuing. Use a back stitch to keep the thread secure.
Step 3: Sew all the way along the zipper. I place my stitches just under the top loops of the row, and about .25 inch below the zipper teeth. Take your time as the crochet fabric will have more stretch than the zipper, sewing slowly will help keep it from bunching or stretching too much. When you’ve reached the end of the row, working .5 inches past end of teeth, back stitch again to secure, cut thread and trim ends.
Baste in place first.
Step 5: Repeat Step 3 to stitch the zipper in place on the other side.
SEWING THE BAG TOGETHER:
Step 1: It’s time to turn this shape into a boxy bag! For each section that you will be sewing, cut a length of yarn that is 4-5 times the length of the opening to allow for sewing and tying off/weaving in the ends. The first thing to do is close the zipper and turn the bag inside out. Start sewing with the end of the bag with the zipper pull.
Step 2: Begin by pinning the ends of the 2 pieces on either side of the zipper (A), to the edge of the middle section B. Line them up evenly, stretching the B section to align with A’s if necessary. To prevent a gap where the zipper tape extends past the zipper teeth, overlap these pieces and sew through them when sewing the ends together.
Step 3: Begin stitching from the side toward the zipper, using a whipstich or running stitch. Make sure to stitch through the zipper tape, and keep the ends overlapped in the center to make the gap as small as possible. Continue sewing to the other corner. Turn that section right side out to check the stitching and the gap is minimal, tie off or weave in the ends.
**For ease of turning, you will want to leave the zipper halfway open from here on out.
ADD THE HANDLE:
Step 4: We will now stitch the sides together, while stitching the handle in place. Take the handle (with the right side with slip stitch finish facing away) and feed it through one of the openings at C, on the sides of the bag. The handle will be stitched in place perpendicular to the seam of A+B, right in the middle of each section C. Flatten the opening at C, with the handle positioned in the middle of the opening, right at the seam, and pin in place. Repeat to pin the other side in place before sewing. Use the diagrams above and photos below for reference.
Step 5: Stitch from one end to the other, using a whipstich or running stitch. Make sure to stitch through both sides and the handle in the center section. Continue sewing to the other end. Turn that section right side out to check that the handle is fully stitched in place, tie off or weave in the ends. Repeat for the second side. We’re halfway there!
ADD THE PULL LOOP:
Step 6: Working now on the other end of the zipper, we will start by adding the pull loop. This handy loop will cover the ends of the zipper tape at P, and make it easier to close the zipper! Take the pull loop and position it over the end of the zipper tape, folding it in half over the ends of the zipper tape. Position bottom of the loop above the teeth, as you will stitch along the bottom of the loop to secure it in place. The bottom of the loop should go just beyond the edges of the zipper tape and slightly overlap the corner of section A on each side of the tape. Pin the loop in place. Use the diagrams above and photos below for reference.
Step 7: Using the yarn end stitch the loop in place, working through Row 12, zipper tape, and Row 1 with each stitch, sew the loop in place all the way across. Your first and last stitches should also catch the top corners of section A right near the zipper tape. Use the remaining yarn end to sew the sides of the pull loop to secure it. Then tie off, and weave in ends.
Step 8: Fold the loop down, toward the outside of the bag, so it will be outside when the bag is sewn together. Like on the first end, pin the ends of the 2 pieces on either side of the zipper A, to the edge of the middle section B. Line them up evenly, stretching the B section to align with A’s if necessary. In the center, pin B to the upper most loops of the pull loop, rather than the zipper tape.
Step 9: Begin stitching from the side toward the zipper, using a whipstich or running stitch. When you come to the pull loop section, stitch B to the upper most loops of the pull loop, rather than working through the zipper tape. Continue sewing to the other corner. Turn that section right side out to check the stitching, then tie off or weave in the ends.
Step 10: We will now stitch the sides together, this is the last step! Flatten one side opening at C, right at the seam, and pin in place. Repeat to pin the other side in place before sewing. Stitch from one end to the other, using a whipstich or running stitch. Turn that section right side out to check the stitching, tie off or weave in the ends. Repeat for the second side. Turn the bag right side out, admire and enjoy! You are finished!
