Cute Thanksgiving Amigurumi!
New FREE 3-in-1 Crochet Pattern!
A super cute set of 3 patterns: Squash Gourd and Pumpkin Crochet pattern. This is a trio of FREE No-sew Amigurumi patterns for beginners and quick for more advanced crocheters!
There are so many stunning varieties within the Cucurbitaceae family, I could never choose just one favorite! So when I decided to create a crochet pattern for this Fall – I had to choose a few squash types to crochet for our fall table decor! That’s how we’ve ended up with this 3-in-1 free amigurumi set of patterns.
I love Farmer’s markets, don’t you? And at this time of year, the array of pumpkins, gourds and squash available is staggering! They’re so colorful and pretty and unusual. Great for eating, perfect for decorating with, I wanted to replicate them in yarn.
What’s the difference between a gourd, squash and pumpkin amigurumi pattern anyway? Well, they’re much the same thing as one another aren’t they? Well, kind of! Keep reading.

The Difference Between Pumpkin and Squash and Gourds
While pumpkins, squash, and gourds may seem interchangeable, they each have distinct characteristics. Saying that though, there’s certainly some overlap!
Let’s make a sweeping generalization about each to try to simplify things!
- Pumpkins are typically larger, rounder, and sweeter, often used for carving or in desserts.
- Squash, on the other hand, are more diverse in shape and size, with a savory flavor often used in entrees or side dishes.
- Gourds are primarily grown for decoration or crafts, though some edible varieties exist.
I like the way the author of a gardening article on this topic breaks it down for us!
We Carve Pumpkins, Cook Squash and Decorate with Gourds
Ultimately, the lines between these three can be blurred, as they belong to the same Cucurbitaceae family and can share similar characteristics. Plus, the flowers can cross-pollinate! But… let’s get back to crochet pumpkins…
Creating Your Own Harvest Display
It’s been a number of years since I created my free crochet Gourd-geous Pumpkins Pattern for y’all! We’ve been decorating with those for years and I wanted to freshen things up!
Inspired by the squash, gourds and pumpkins I see at the markets at this harvest time of year, I wanted to recreate a rainbow of pumpkin crochet patterns! You may notice that I’ve included a few of those lovely local squash in my photos! I loved combining my crochet pumpkins and gourds with those I found at the farmers market. You can try this too!
To bring these decorative amigurumi to life, I’ve carefully selected a variety of yarn colors to capture the vibrant hues of autumn. While I’ve opted to go with my personal favorite hues of teal, purple, and pink, you can opt for more traditional colors for your gourds and squash. Wether you use deep oranges and rich browns or emerald greens and golden yellows, these crochet pumpkins will add warmth and festive celebration, and to your home.
Need some help with the stitches? I provide photo tutorials within the pattern to help you with the included techniques and more! I am always happy to help you with any questions you may have! Don’t crochet yet? I’d love to help you Learn to Crochet with my fun Crochet Tutorials!

Stop here and stuff the gourd. Don’t stuff too firmly, for easier shaping.
Round 37: [Sc, sc2tog,] 6 times, (12 sc).
Round 38: Sc2tog 6 times, (6 sc). FO and leave a long tail. Using yarn tail and yarn needle, weave the yarn around the stitches along the opening to close the gourd. Weave in the ends. Continue with Shaping the Pumpkin below.
FINISHING THE GOURDS:
SHAPING PUMPKIN: Keep yarn taut throughout this process for best results!
STEP 1: Cut a new length of yarn (4-5 feet long). Thread and use needle to pull yarn through center from bottom to top, leaving a long tail at the bottom. (I left half the length of yarn and worked the second half of my stitch lines with this end.)
STEP 2: Bring the yarn down and around one side, then pull needle back up through the center from bottom to top again. Pull tight to create 1st line. Bring the yarn down the opposite side then pull yarn back up through the center from bottom to top again (keeping taut) to create 2nd line.
STEP 3: Continue this process, creating 3-4 more lines on each side of the pumpkin, spacing them evenly to create a total of 10-12 lines. Keeping the yarn tight will help to shape the pumpkin and give more definition to the lines.
STEP 4: Bring the yarn through from top to bottom, then bottom to top again to give more definition to the center if desired. Secure both yarn ends, weave in ends and trim excess yarn. Continue with Adding an optional stem (below) and embellish if desired.
CURVING CROOKNECK:
STEP 1: Cut an 18” length of yarn, thread and weave yarn vertically along neck between Rounds 26 – 54. Make the line straight as possible, leaving yarn at both ends the same length. Pass the needle up and down through several stitches to secure one yarn end.
STEP 2: Gently pull the remaining yarn end to curve the neck. You can curve the neck as much or as little as you like. When finished creating curve, secure the other end in the same fashion and weave in both ends. Add optional stem and embellish if desired.
TIP: To get a more dramatic curve to the neck, you may want to repeat the process with a second length of yarn spaced about 0.25” away from the first.
ADDING A STEM: (OPTIONAL)
You can use a found stick, cork, cinnamon stick, etc. to create a stem. Use hot glue to secure the stem to the top of the gourd. For a longer stick you may want to leave a slight opening at the top of the gourd to insert stem into the opening before gluing. I have used faux leather stems on my gourds made by my friend Kathy on Etsy here → Kathy’s Kozies.
SMALL CROCHET STEM:
Round 1: Create Magic Circle and work 6 sc in magic circle, sl st to join, (6 sc).
Round 2: Begin working in continuous rounds, do not sl st join at end of round. Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, (6 sc).
Round 3: Sc in each st around, (6 sc).
Round 4: [Sc, 2 sc in next 2 sts,] 2 times, sl st to 1st sc of R4 to join, (10 sc).
Round 5: [Picot, skip next st, sl st in next st,] 4 times, picot, skip next st, sl st in 1st st to join, (5 picot). FO, leave a long tail. Lightly stuff and stitch to gourd.
LARGE CROCHET STEM:
Round 1: Create Magic Circle and work 5 sc in magic circle, sl st to join, (5 sc).
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st, sl st to join, (10 sc).
Round 3: Begin working in continuous rounds, do not sl st join at end of round. Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, (10 sc).
Round 4: [Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts,] twice, (8 sc).
Rounds 5-8: Sc in each st around, (8 sc, 2 rounds).
Round 9: 2 sc in each st around, sl st to 1 sc of R8 to join, (16 sc).
Round 10: [Picot, skip next st, sl st in next st,] 8 times, sl st to join (8 picot). FO, leave a long tail. Lightly stuff and stitch to pumpkin.
LEAVES: The vegan leather leaves I used on my gourds were made by my friend Kathy. You can buy leaves, stems and other decorations from her shop on Etsy here → Kathy’s Kozies.
