Tapestry Crochet vs Intarsia vs Mosaic Crochet
Are you colorwork curious?
Mosaic crochet and tapestry crochet are both fantastic techniques for creating stunning multicolored projects. However, they achieve their vibrant results in distinct ways.
Tapestry crochet, sometimes known as jacquard crochet, involves juggling 2 or more yarn colors at once. With Tapestry, you hold your active color and carry the unused colors along the back of your work, switching back and forth between those colors to create a pattern or image. In Tapestry, usually the working color is worked around the carried yarn. This method allows for a vast array of colors in a single row and intricate, detailed patterns.
Intarsia crochet, is similar to Tapestry Crochet in that it involves working with multiple colors of yarn with in each row. With Intasia colors are typically in larger blocks of color. What makes Intarsia stand out from tapestry, you work each color section with a separate ball of yarn, rather than carrying the different yarns along.
Mosaic crochet, on the other hand, utilizes a single yarn per row. The magic lies in strategically placing single crochets and double crochets to create the illusion of multiple colors within a row. This technique is perfect for geometric patterns, typically using a maximum of two colors per row. The result is a beautiful, textured effect.
Mosaic, Intarsia, and tapestry crochet might sound like a tangled mess of yarn at first. But fear not! Let’s ditch the overwhelm and get our hooks working some magic together. Join us on the CAL – we’ll create a stunning Moonrise Mountain piece that will teach you step-by-step, how to learn tapestry crochet.

So I really thought it was about time I created my own patern. And better than that. Teach Y’all how to do Tapestry Crochet at the same time – in a CAL!

Learn Tapestry Crochet Tutorials:
Tapestry Color Changes: To change colors from CA to CB, complete the number of stitches in CA indicated by the pattern, stopping at the last stitch. For last sc of CA, insert hook and pull up a loop as usual. Drop the CA and pick up the CB yarn, yo and pull through both loops on the hook with CB, to complete the sc st. Repeat process for each color change.

NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- This tapestry crochet pattern is worked back and forth in rows. Carry the non-working along throughout the tapestry, crocheting around non-working yarn
- Try to keep an even tension. Blocking is highly recommended
- Odd rows are Right side (RS). Even rows are Wrong side (WS).
- Chart is worked from bottom to top. Work Right to Left on odd rows (RS), and Left to Right on even rows (WS). This will be reversed if you are left handed
- Instead of a beginning chain 1, pull up the working loop when creating 1st st of each row. This creates an edge for your tapestry that is straight and more even.
- Pattern instructions are written with the color CA/CB in parentheses followed by the number of stitches in that color. The only stitch used is a single crochet. Ex. (CB) x 9, (CA) x 3, = work 9 sc in Color B, work 3 sc in Color A, and so on.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing Wall Tapestry:
ADDING THE FRINGE:
Step 1: Cut 39 pieces of yarn 16-17 inches long. I cut 29 pieces of Moonlight (gray) yarn and 10 pieces of Celestial (purple) yarn to match the stitches of Row 1.
Step 2: Insert hook upward through outer st of (beginning chain) Row 1, place center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it down creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for each st of Row 1, for a total of 39 pieces of fringe.
Step 4: Trim ends evenly. An easy way to do this is to lay the piece down on a table, with the fringe laid flat and neat. Place a piece (or 2) of masking tape across the fringe where you plan to cut. You can leave all pieces the same length, or use 2 pieces of tape to create a triangular shape for visual interest.
Finishing Wall Tapestry:
ADDING THE STICK/DOWEL AND HANGER:
Step 1: Cut a length of yarn about 3.5 – 4 feet long depending on the thickness of your stick. With a tapestry needle, bring the yarn through the upper right corner stitch from the back. Place the stick along the top of the hanging. Stitch over the top of the stick and through the 3rd from right stitch, from back to front.
Step 2: Continue whip stitching around the stick along the top of the hanging. Stitch into every other stitch, working from back to front. Keep your stitches loose enough to leave a small gap between the stick and the top of the hanging. Add an extra stitch at both ends, tie off the ends and weave in for extra security.
Step 3: Cut an additional length of yarn or string 20 – 30” in length and tie to each end of the stick for hanging. Conceal ends as desired and hang up your work!
Make sure to share your finished pics on Ravelry and in our Facebook Group for a chance to show off your work and win prizes too!
