Crochet Throw Blanket
You won’t catch me hanging out in my fave chair or on the couch without a cozy throw blanket tucked around me! I use blankets year round! In the summer with the a/c kicking (my husband is always hot and I’m always cold 😝) or in the winter when it’s cold inside and out, I love to get cozy with my latest crochet project!! Either way, there is just something about having that blanket that makes the experience that much better, add a cup of my fave hot beverage (I love coffee and tea so I’ll take either!) and I’ll be here for hours! 😉 How about you?
If you’ve been around a while then you know I love to create patterns with lots of options, and this and this easy crochet throw blanket is no exception! Choose your size – Lapghan, Throw, or XL Throw because we as humans are NOT all the same size, and we have different needs. Then there is the fringe. I love a fringe, but I know not everyone does, so I made sure to design a border for this afghan that looks great with or without a fringe! YES!
What is the Sweet Stripes Stitch?
The Sweet Stripes stitch – it’s my signature stitch and I’m pretty obsessed with it! This textured crochet stitch creates a beautiful, eye-catching design that looks way more complicated than it actually is.
The Sweet Stripes stitch combines basic stitches (single crochet and double crochet) with strategically placed increases and decreases to create this amazing striped effect. The best part? No color changes needed! The texture creates the “stripes” all on its own. It’s perfect for adventurous beginners who want to level up their skills, and the result is a fabric with wonderful drape and that handcrafted look we all love.
TBH, I think one of my favorite things about this stitch is how it takes simple yarn and makes it look absolutely stunning. Pair a variegated yarn with a solid color for the border, and you’ve got yourself a blanket that looks like you spent DAYS on it (when really, it’s way faster than that!).

Why You’ll Love This Chunky Crochet Blanket Pattern
You won’t catch me hanging out in my favorite chair or on the couch without a cozy throw blanket tucked around me! 😉
Here’s why you’re going to love making your own Sweet Stripes throw:
- It’s FAST. When you’re working with chunky yarn, they work up so quickly! The lapghan size is perfect for a weekend project, and even the XL throw won’t take you forever. I made six last weekend while listening to a murder mystery podcast. (I regret nothing).
- Three sizes to choose from. If you’ve been around a while then you know I love to create patterns with lots of options, and this easy crochet throw blanket is no exception! Choose your size – Lapghan, Throw, or XL Throw because we as humans are NOT all the same size, and we have different needs.
- Fringe is optional. I love a fringe, but I know not everyone does, so I made sure to design a border for this afghan that looks great with or without a fringe!
- The texture. The Sweet Stripes stitch creates this gorgeous raised texture that’s soft, cozy, and honestly just fun to look at. It’s got depth and interest without being too busy.
- Perfect for gift-giving. Need a gift for a guy who’s impossible to shop for? Make him this blanket. My husband has claimed THREE of my test blankets because he loves how soft and warm they are. It’s also perfect for housewarmings, weddings, or just because!

Quick and Easy Afghan Pattern
The Sweet Stripes Crochet Throw Blankets are easy to make with simple repetitions! These chunky afghans make a great project to sit down with your crochet and listen to your fave audiobook or watch the latest movie on Prime Video! I love to binge my fave shows while I crochet, how about you? The best part about crocheting a blanket is once it gets about halfway you can use it as a blanket, while you’re still crocheting it!
I created this crochet afghan pattern in 3 sizes – Lapghan, Throw, and XL Throw Blanket! This way you can make just the right blanket for your preference! No matter which size you make, a Sweet Stripes Throw Blanket makes an amazing gift! A lapghan is perfect for little kids and for your elderly family members to use on their lap or around their shoulders! The Throw Blanket Afghan is wonderful to put on the back of your couch or folded in your favorite chair so it’s ready when you want to curl up with your hooks or fave kindle book!! The XL Throw Blanket is perfect for your teen or brother who needs a larger size or anyone who just loves a big, cuddly blanket!

Make a Crochet Lapghan!
This quick crochet blanket pattern is perfect for an intermediate crocheter or a confident advanced beginner who is ready to tackle the linked double crochet stitch! I have included photo tutorials for this fun stitch. You will be able to confidently say you KNOW how to make a crochet afghan once you’ve completed the pattern!
Here’s what you need to get started:
Lapghan (36″ x 51″): 1100-1300 yards
Throw (49″ x 61″): 1700-1900 yards
XL Throw (54″ x 67″): 2100-2300 yards
Hook: M/N-13 9.0 mm crochet hook! ← I highly recommend this gorgeous beauty! My 100% go to hooks are the Furls Streamline Resin Hook, they are bae!
Yarn: Below are the yarns I used to create my samples! Loops & Threads Charisma is my go to Chunky/Bulky (5) yarn because of the amazing colors and it is soooo soft and cuddly! For this project I used Northern Lights Variegated with the border and stripes in Black! 😍

Yarn Color Combination Ideas
One of the most fun parts of this pattern is choosing your colors! Since you’re working with a variegated main color and a solid accent, the possibilities are endless. Here are some combos I love:
Classic & Cozy: Any warm variegated (like fall colors or earth tones) with Cream or Oatmeal
Bold & Modern: A bright variegated with Black or Charcoal Grey
Soft & Dreamy: Pastel variegated with White or Light Grey
Masculine: Blues/greens variegated with Navy or Dark Grey (guys LOVE this combo!)
Farmhouse Feel: Neutral variegated with Tan or Sage Green.
The variegated yarn does most of the work for you, so you really can’t go wrong. Just pick a solid that appears in your variegated, and you’re golden!
How to Customize the Size
Want to make your blanket bigger or smaller than the three sizes I’ve included? You totally can! Here’s how:
The Sweet Stripes pattern works in multiples, so you can adjust your starting chain to make it wider or narrower. Just keep in mind you’ll need more (or less) yarn depending on your changes.
To make it wider: Add more chains to your foundation chain in multiples of 4
To make it longer: Just keep working rows until you hit your desired length
Quick tip: Weigh your yarn ball before you start and periodically as you work. This helps you know if you have enough yarn to finish!
Why This Makes the Perfect Gift for Men
Can we talk about how hard it is to find gifts for guys? Like, seriously. But y’all, I’ve discovered that handmade blankets are basically the secret weapon for gift-giving to men!
Here’s why guys love these throw blankets:
- They’re chunky and substantial (not delicate or fussy)
- The texture looks modern and cool, not “crafty”
- They’re WARM and actually functional
- The bigger sizes (looking at you, XL throw) are perfect for tall guys or anyone who likes to really wrap up
- You can pick masculine color combos that look amazing in any space
My husband literally steals every blanket I make. I’ll finish one, set it on the couch to photograph, and the next thing I know, he’s claimed it for his chair. The Sweet Stripes texture is substantial enough that guys appreciate the quality, and the chunky yarn makes it feel premium.
Plus, it’s a gift they’ll actually USE. Every single day. How many gifts can you say that about?

How to Care for Your Chunky Crochet Blanket
Okay, so you’ve made this gorgeous blanket – now how do you keep it looking amazing? Here’s what I recommend:
Washing: Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, or use your washing machine’s delicate cycle in a mesh laundry bag. Loops & Threads Charisma (and most acrylic chunky yarns) are pretty forgiving, but I always err on the side of gentle!
Drying: Lay flat to dry if possible. If you need to use the dryer, use low heat and remove it while it’s still slightly damp, then lay flat to finish drying. This helps prevent stretching.
Storage: Fold (don’t hang!) your blanket when storing it. Hanging can stretch out the stitches over time. Store it in a cool, dry place.
Refreshing: If your blanket gets a little stretched out from use (it happens!), you can gently reshape it while damp and lay flat to dry.
Pro tip: These blankets get softer with every wash! So don’t be afraid to actually use and wash your creation.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
My edges are wavy/ruffled:
This is usually a tension issue. You might be working too loosely, or adding extra stitches accidentally. Count your stitches at the end of each row to make sure you have the right number, and try to keep your tension consistent.
My blanket is getting wider/narrower:
You’re either adding or losing stitches somewhere. Count those stitches! It’s tedious but so worth it to catch the problem early.
The texture doesn’t look right:
Make sure you’re working in the correct stitch and in the right place. The Sweet Stripes stitch is all about those strategic increases and decreases, so following the pattern exactly matters here.
I’m running out of yarn:
This happens! If you’re close to finishing, you might be able to make the border slightly narrower. Or grab another skein – it’s better to have extra than to run out right at the end.
My linked double crochet looks weird:
Check out the photo tutorial in the pattern! Linked dc takes a little practice, but once you get it, it’s actually super easy. Don’t give up – your third or fourth row will look way better than your first!
