Cafuné Crochet Wall Tapestry

Cafuné is a textured wall tapestry you crochet flat, then hang from a dowel or a branch. It mixes popcorn stitches, slip stitching and other textured stitches, with long fringe for that layered, made-by-hand look. It measures about 12 inches wide and 18 inches long. It works up in a weekend, and you can make it in any color you want.

Free Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern!

Raise your hand if you’ve made about forty pretty things for other people and exactly zero gorgeous projects for yourself. Same here. That’s what the Cafuné project is about! It’s a fun, boho design with all the warm and cozy feels,  giving you the warm fuzzies every time you look at it on your wall.

This free crochet wall hanging pattern is for confident beginners and up who want that boho fiber art look without picking up a whole new craft to get it. Cafuné uses super bulky yarn, and it grows fast, meaning you can hook one in an afternoon.

I first published this pattern in the June 2021 issue of Happily Hooked Magazine, and it’s stayed one of my favorite makes ever since. Now it lives here on the blog, free for you to make as many times as you like. But remember, to make one for yourself, first!

The full free crochet wall hanging pattern is further down this post, with photo tutorials for the trickier bits.

Cafuné Free Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern

People see this hanging and assume it’s woven or knotted. It isn’t. It’s all crochet, with stitches a lot of you already know mixed in with a few fancier ones. So you get the boho, hand-knotted fiber art look on your wall, but you make it with the craft you already know. No new tools. No new craft to learn from scratch. If you’ve been eyeing macramé tutorials and feeling unsure, let me make things easy for you.

The texture is the whole point. Those rows of popcorn stitches catch the light and throw little shadows, so the piece looks expensive even in plain cream or classic tweed yarn. The long fringe at the bottom does a lot of heavy lifting too. It’s the part that makes folks tilt their head and ask where you bought it.

It’s also a quick maker for craft sales! The neutral version sells to just about anyone, and you can knock out a few in an afternoon once you’ve made one.

Skill Level and Stitches

This is an intermediate pattern. It uses a few advanced stitches, but I’ve included photo tutorials so you’re not left guessing. If you can do single and double crochet and you’re game to try a popcorn and a v-stitch, you can make this. The super bulky yarn helps here too. Big stitches are easier to see, so when something goes sideways you’ll spot it fast and fix it. PRO TIP: Use a lighter colored yarn to make it even easier to make!

Approximate Dimensions

12” wide x 18” long

What You’ll Need

Keep it simple. (Full materials list further down the post) Any super bulky (weight 6) yarn you like, 220 to 250 yards total 10.0 mm (N/P) crochet hook Yarn needle Scissors A 12 to 15 inch dowel rod or a branch for hanging That’s it. The branch in my photos is just a piece of driftwood I found, so don’t overthink that part.

Pick Your Color

The version you see here is Aspen Tweed, that creamy white with the little flecks running through it. A neutral like this goes with any room, which is why I reach for it. But the pattern works in any color, so if you want a deep rust, a sage green, or a bold accent shade to pop against a white wall, go for it. Make one to match your decor, or make one that fights with it on purpose. Your wall, your call.

What I’m Watching & Listening To (While I Crochet)

I love to binge a series on Prime or Netflix while I crochet! And I’m just as likely to be listening to an addictive new audiobook on Libro.fm – I know that y’all love to do this too! Once you get the hang of these fun, textured stitches that make Cafuné stand out, you can easily indulge in a fascinating new audiobook, or binge that new show you’ve been dying to watch. Plus, thanks to the super bulky yarn, this wall hanging makes for a rather quick home dec project, so you can easily finish 1-2 in a weekend!

Right now, I just started watching The Boys on Prime, as well as re-watching seasons 1 & 2 of House of the Dragon so I can start watching season 3! I am also currently listening to City of Brass, the first book in the Daevabad Trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty. I highly recommend this excellent series and author if you like unique fantasy and world building.

I’m deep into my re-read / re-listening to the ACOTAR A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas in anticipation of the long awaited new books coming out in October and January! I’m currently on book 5 A Court of Silver Flames. Next up after this one will be starting my re-read / re-listen of the Crescent City series also by Sarah J. Maas because there are crossovers and I’ll not say anything more about that because I’m not spoiling it for anyone! I’ve read every book she’s written and they do not disappoint!

What are you watching and listening to these days? Tell me in the comments!

My Amazing Pattern Testers!

I couldn’t have gotten this pattern ready without my testers, and I’m so thankful for them. They worked hard on their own Cafuné wall hangings and sent back the kind of honest, detailed feedback that makes a crochet wall hanging pattern actually work for everyone who picks it up. Every note they shared helped me catch the spots that needed clearing up before I handed this off to y’all!

Seeing the projects you talented hookers make with my designs is one of my favorite parts of this whole thing. My testers are a big reason this pattern is as clear and ready to make as it is. Take a look at the beautiful Cafuné wall hangings they crocheted, down below.

Pro Tips for the Best Results

  • Use a true super bulky (weight 6) yarn. A lighter yarn will leave the piece floppy and the texture flat, and you’ll lose that chunky look we’re going for.
  • A real branch hangs heavier and sits more naturally than a thin dowel. Best to go slow and be careful with the ends of the stick, so they don’t snag your yarn.
  • Trim the fringe last, all at once, with the piece hanging up. It’s much easier to get a clean line that way than flat on the table.
  • Give the puffs and bobbles a little tug as you go so they sit proud on the front. I think they’re the star of the show!
  • Making these for a craft sale? Batch your fringe cutting at the end across all of them. It saves a ton of time.

Finishing Cafuné Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern:

ADDING THE TOP FRINGE:

Step 1: Cut 25 pieces of yarn 6 inches long.

Step 2: Insert hook upward through FL of 1st st of Row 10, place the center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it down creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for each st of Row 10, for a total of 25 pieces of fringe.

Step 4: Trim fringe evenly, so that it ends just above Row 14.

ADDING THE BOTTOM FRINGE:

Step 1: Cut 40 pieces of yarn 12 inches long.

Step 2: Insert hook upward through outer st of Row 34, place center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it down creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 on both sides, working 20 pieces of fringe per side, with 2 pieces placed in the loops of row 46.

Step 4: Trim fringe evenly. An easy way to do this is to lay the piece down on a table, with the fringe laid flat and neat. Place a piece (or 2) of masking tape across the fringe where you plan to cut.

crochet cafune crochet wall hanging pattern fringe 2 web
crochet cafune crochet wall hanging pattern fringe 1 web

ADDING THE STICK/DOWEL AND HANGER:

Step 1: Cut a length of yarn about 3.5 – 4 feet long depending on the thickness of your stick. With a tapestry needle, bring the yarn through the upper right corner stitch from the back. Place the stick along the top of the hanging. Stitch over the top of the stick and through the 3rd from right stitch, from back to front.

Step 2: Continue whip stitching around the stick along the top of the hanging. Stitch into every other stitch, working from back to front. Keep your stitches loose enough that there is small gap between the stick and the top of the hanging. Add an extra stitch at both ends, tie off the ends and weave in for extra security.

Step 3: Cut an additional length of yarn or string 20 – 30” in length and tie to each end of the stick for hanging. Conceal ends as desired and hang up your work!

Frequently Asked Questions About This Free Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern (FAQs)

How hard is the Cafuné wall hanging to make?

It’s an intermediate make, but a friendly one. The base stitches are ones most crocheters know, and the popcorn and v-stitches come with photo tutorials. If you’re a confident beginner who’s ready to try something new, you can handle this. Plus the thicker yarn makes each stitch easy to see. Especially if you choose a lighter colored yarn!

How much yarn do I need for a crochet wall hanging?

For this free crochet wall hanging pattern, plan on 220 to 250 yards of super bulky yarn total. Three or four regular skeins of Lion Brand Hometown (or 2 jumbo balls) will get you there, depending on the dye lot and how generous your fringe is. Buy a little extra if you think you’d prefer a longer fringe.

Can I make this wall hanging bigger?

Yes, you can! The easy way is to just repeat the textured rows for extra length, minding the right vs. wrong side of course. But adding more width will require some math on your part for the bottom set of bobbles. A simpler way to make your hanging larger is to double up the yarn – work with 2 strands of bulky (5) yarn for a larger piece, the easy way! Keep in mind a bigger hanging eats more yarn and needs a longer branch, so buy accordingly before you start.

Why does my crochet wall hanging curl at the edges, and how do I fix it?

Super bulky yarn usually hangs flat, so curling is rare with this one. If your sides do roll in, give it a light wet block. Soak it, shape it flat, pin the edges, and let it dry. The weight of the fringe helps pull everything straight too.

What can I use instead of a dowel rod?

A branch works great and looks more natural, which is what I used for a more farmhouse-boho vibe. A piece of driftwood, a smooth stick from the yard, or a length of copper pipe all work. Just aim for something 12 to 15 inches long that can hold the weight of the yarn.

How do I keep it sitting even on the dowel?

Space your top loops evenly as you attach them, and try not to pull some tighter than others. If the piece bunches or slides after you hang it, just nudge the loops along the branch until the spacing looks right. A branch with a little texture grips better than a slick dowel.

How do I hang it on the wall?

Tie a length of yarn to each end of the dowel for a hanger, then loop that over a small nail or wall hook. Renting, or working with plaster? A sticky-back hook or a Command strip rated for the weight holds fine and won’t leave holes.
