Cerridwen’s Cauldron Coasters
New Free Crochet Pattern!
Halloween decor doesn’t have to stop at pumpkins and spider webs! The free crochet cauldron coasters pattern gives you a creative way to dress up your table for spooky season. These coasters are super cute and functional too! They’re perfect for protecting your surfaces during Halloween parties, movie nights, or October evenings, from drink rings and spills.
The free Halloween pattern includes three designs in one: a simple cauldron coaster, a bobble version that stacks in the cauldron to look like it’s bubbling, and a spiral version in two colors. Each one works up quickly, making them a fun stash-busting project that’s just right for fall crafts. Handmade coasters bring a colorful twist to Halloween decor while also being useful enough to want to use them all year!

Crochet a Spooky Set of Cauldron Coasters!
Y’all are going to have so much fun making these crochet cauldron coasters — a Halloween coaster pattern that’ll add instant decoration, wherever you put them. The design screams Halloween, is quick to stitch, and a great way to use up leftover yarn in classic spooky shades like green, purple, orange and black.
The pattern includes the amigurumi cauldron plus 2 potion coasters: a simple coaster with bobble edging that bubbles over when stacked inside the cauldron, and a spiral design. Step-by-step instructions and a photo tutorial will guide you through each option, making it easy to follow along no matter your skill level. Best of all, this free crochet pattern works up quickly in cotton yarn, giving you a handmade set of coasters that are ready to protect your tables, add Halloween fun and throw in the washer as required! These coasters are great for plants too!

Gifting Crochet Cauldron Coasters – A Quick Last-minute Gift!
Handmade coasters always make thoughtful gifts, and these crochet cauldron coasters are no exception. They’re practical enough for everyday use yet fun enough to bring out at Halloween parties. A set makes a perfect treat for friends who love spooky décor, families hosting a fall gathering, or neighbors you’d like to surprise with something handmade. They also work as easy teacher gifts, stocking up dorm rooms for teens, or as part of a Halloween care package. Want to use them any time of year? Just make the coasters in seasonal colors and save the cauldron storage for Halloween!
How you present them can make the gift even more special. Stack the coasters together and tie them with rustic twine for a farmhouse look, or use bright ribbon to match the season. For an extra thoughtful touch, pair the set with a handcrafted mug, a bag of coffee beans, or a tin of favorite tea. Coasters I made years ago are still in use around my own home, so I can vouch for their durability. Wrapped up with a little care, these cauldron coasters become a lasting gift that’s bound to be accepted with a happy squeal!

Puff Ball Stitch:

STEP 1: Yo, insert hook in the third ch from hook, yo and pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook).
STEP 2: [Yo, insert hook in the same ch, yo and pull up a loop,] 6 times, you should finish with 15 loops on the hook.

Continue with Edging below.
POTION COASTERS: (Make a set of 3 – 6 to fit in cauldron)
SWIRL POTION COASTERS:
- Do not join. Work in continuous rounds, alternating between the 2 colors as indicated.
- Use a stitch marker to hold the working yarn of the other color when not in use. You may want to mark the first and last stitch with a stitch marker to help keep track.
Round 1: (MC) Make a Magic Circle with main potion color, ch 1, 4 sc, 2 hdc, in magic circle, do not pull tight, either pull up the working yarn or add a stitch marker to hold in place while you add the second color, (4 sc, 2 hdc). (CC) Join contrast potion yarn to magic circle with a sl st, in the open area after the main color portion, ch 1, 4 sc, 2 hdc in magic circle, pull up the working yarn or add a stitch marker to hold in place, (4 sc, 2 hdc).
Round 2: (MC) 2 hdc in first sc of CC, 2 hdc in next 5 CC sts, hold/pull up end, (12 hdc). (CC) 2 hdc in first sc of MC, 2 hdc in next 5 MC sts, hold/pull up end, (12 hdc).
Round 3: (MC) Dc in next CC st, 2 dc in next CC st, [dc in next st, 2 dc in next st,] 5 times, hold/pull up end, (18 dc). (CC) Dc in next MC st, 2 dc in next MC st, [dc in next st, 2 dc in next st,] 5 times, hold/pull up end, (18 dc).

Round 5: [Hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st,] 5 times, hdc in next 3 sts, (28 hdc).
Round 6: Sc in next 52 sts, sl st to join, (52 sc). Keep stitches loose on this round.
Continue with Edging below.
EDGING FOR BOTH COASTER STYLES:
- You will be creating a puff ball stitch edging to look like the bubbling potion when sticking up out of the top of the cauldron.
- Each puff ball stitch is worked into a chain, then you will slip stitch back into the chain and along the last round to create the edging. See photo tutorial p. 5.
Round 7: [Ch 4, puff ball st in 3rd ch from hook, sl st in 4th ch, sl st back in same st as ch-4 and next 3 sts,] 17 times, sl st to join, (86 sl sts, 17 ch-4, 17 puff balls sts). FO, weave in ends.
ADD COASTERS TO THE CAULDRON: Pinch the center of the coaster and fold or roll the edges of the coaster around so the puff ball stitch edging is sticking up out of the top. You can place them in individually, or stack them when doing this, it works well both ways.
