Free Sól Celestial Granny Square Pattern
There’s something extra fun about a granny square that starts as a circle and turns into a square. It feels a little bit like crochet magic. ✨
The Sól Sunburst Granny Square is a free crochet tutorial with a bold sun in the center, textured rays, and a clean square frame around the outside. It has that classic granny square usefulness, but with a modernized, more celestial feel.
This free granny square pattern is best suited to intermediate crocheters… but I’m sure that it can be achieved by confident beginners who are ready to level up past the classic cluster square. Of course, it’s also practical enough to use in blankets, bags, pillows, table runners, wall hangings, and more.
Keep scrolling to find the free sun granny square crochet pattern right here on the blog, but be warned! Once you make one, you’re going to want to crochet a whole sky full of them! ☀️🧶

What Is the Sól Sunburst Granny Square?
The Sól Sunburst Granny Square is a crochet circle-in-a-square motif with a textured sunburst center. Really pretty and certainly eye-catching!
You begin by working in the round to build the central sun. Then the rays are shaped with textured stitches before the design is squared off with a border. The end result is a granny square with a bold center that still joins neatly with other squares.
It’s a good project for intermediate crocheters, or confident beginners who are ready to try something a little more interesting and a lot more fun than a basic granny square.
Why You’ll Love This Sunburst Granny Square
As is the case with so many of my free crochet patterns, this celestial square is a great mix of pretty and useful. If I do say so myself! 😜
The Sól blanket square has enough detail to keep your hands and brain interested, but it’s still a small project. That makes it a great pattern for using up yarn, testing color combos, or making a few squares at a time between bigger projects. Stack them up throughout the year to make a larger project once you have enough.
You’ll love this pattern if you enjoy:
- Celestial crochet designs
- Textured granny squares
- Circle-in-a-square crochet patterns
- Small crochet projects with big impact
- Blanket squares that don’t feel boring
- Free granny square patterns that look a bit different
The textured sun center is the “star” of this design (pun intended!), 🌟 but the square shape means it’s super easy to use in so many projects. I’m thinking blankets, pillows, other home decor, bags, or even wearables!
You can save this post to Pinterest or bookmark it for later, so the pattern is easy to find when you’re ready to make more squares.

About the Name Sól
Sól is named for the Norse sun goddess who carries the sun across the sky. We have just passed the Summer Solstice and longest day of the year, which is the time when Sól is most prevalent. We love to mark such occasions around here, and what better way than with a fab crochet project?!?
That felt like the perfect name for this bright little square. It has a strong sun center, sharp rays, and a celestial look that works beautifully in warm yellows, golds, oranges, blues, creams, and deep night-sky shades.
You can make it bold and bright, soft and dreamy, or moody and magical. Same pattern, totally different feel.

Recommended Skill Level for the Sól Square
This is an intermediate crochet pattern.
A confident beginner may also be able to make it with patience, stitch markers, and a willingness to count carefully.
You’ll want to be comfortable with:
- Working in the round
- Reading a written crochet pattern
- Counting stitches
- Changing stitch heights
- Crocheting into different stitch placements
- Blocking granny squares
Nothing here is wildly difficult, but it does ask you to pay attention. This is a great “level up” square if you already know the basics and want a pattern that feels more exciting.

Tips Before You Start Your First Sól Square
Troubleshooting
A textured square like this is easier when you take the time to give yourself a few little helps along the way.
Use stitch markers.
Marking the corners can save you from recounting the same round over and over.
Check your center before moving on.
If the sun center is ruffling, your tension may be too loose or your hook may be too large. If it is cupping, your tension may be too tight or your hook may be too small.
Block your square.
Blocking helps the rays settle, opens up the stitches, and gets the corners looking neat.
Weave in ends as you go.
If you are making a blanket’s worth of squares, this one choice can save your sanity.
Make a test square first.
One test square lets you check your yarn, hook, size, and color choices before committing to a bigger project.
Color Ideas for Your Sunburst Granny Square
This is one of my favorite parts about making a crochet granny square!
For a classic sunburst granny square, use a warm color in the center and a sky color for the outer square. Yellow and turquoise gives it a bright, sunny look. Burnt orange and navy feels more like sunset or a night sky.
You could also try:
- Gold sun with cream border
- White sun with black border
- Mustard sun with dusty blue border
- Coral sun with teal border
- Soft peach sun with sage border
- Bright yellow sun with deep purple border
- Variegated center with a solid border
For a blanket, you could make every sun the same color and change the border colors. Or flip it around and make a whole sky full of different suns. You’re only limited by your imagination and creativity!
Frequently Asked Questions About Sunburst Granny Squares (FAQs)
Is this sunburst granny square beginner friendly?
This pattern is best for intermediate crocheters, but confident beginners can give it a try. You should already know how to work in the round, count stitches, and follow a written crochet pattern.
Why is my granny square curling or ruffling?
It’s almost always tension. A center that ruffles like a potato chip means your stitches are too loose, so try a smaller hook. A square that cups or curls means they’re too tight, so size up. Adjust by half a millimeter at a time until it lays flat.
How do you turn a circle into a square in crochet?
You add taller stitches at four evenly spaced points to build the corners, with shorter stitches between them along the sides. The pattern tells you exactly which stitches go where, so you don’t have to do any math. Just follow along and the square appears.
Do I have to block this granny square?
You do not have to, but I strongly recommend it. Blocking helps the sun rays sit nicely, straightens the edges, and makes your square easier to join with other squares.
Can I use a different yarn weight for this pattern?
Yes. Your square will just come out bigger or smaller. A worsted weight square shrinks down nicely in DK or sport for smaller projects. Just match your hook to your yarn, keep your tension consistent, and make every square in the batch with the same yarn.
How do you join granny squares together?
You’ve got options. Whip stitch and mattress stitch give you a flat, nearly invisible seam. Slip stitch or single crochet joins add a raised ridge that can look great as a design feature. For the Sól, a flat join keeps the attention on those sun centers where it belongs.
