Toadstool Tales Book Cover Crochet Pattern!
Isn’t Toadstool Tales a cute name? Did you know that Aminita Muscaria – the mushroom we see most often depicted in fairy tale illustrations, fantasy art and crochet patterns – is also called the Fly Agaric? It’s an agaric mushroom (gilled mushroom) that has been used for centuries to deter flies! People in Europe used to dry and then crumble the mushroom into saucers of milk to attract and kill flies in dairies and kitchens. #funfact 1 😍
The name “Toadstool” is linked to the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) due to its iconic red cap with white spots, often depicted as a seat for toads or fairies in folklore. Toads were believed to rest on or under these mushrooms, strengthening the association. In medieval times, both toads and Fly Agaric were seen as symbols of poison and witchcraft. The term “stool” suggests a seat, adding to the idea of mushrooms as resting places for magical creatures.
#funfact 2 😜
Since Fly Agaric was also used as an insecticide, and toads eat insects, there’s another indirect link—perhaps people observed toads near these mushrooms, associating them with one another over time!
More Than Just a Book Cover!
This 2-in-1 mushroom pouch pattern isn’t just for books. Use it to protect e-readers, tablets, or journals while on the go. The padded design keeps delicate covers safe from scratches, and the button loop closure ensures everything stays secure. It’s also great for storing sketchbooks, planners, your bible, or even small craft projects like embroidery or crochet hooks. Carry it in a tote or display it on a shelf as a forest loving way to keep your favorite things safe and dust free.

You Could be Chillin’ With a Mindless Make!
Here’s How I Do it 😜
Aside from the obvious fact that you can choose from two sizes of Mushroom Book Cover! One of my favorite things about the Toadstool Tales Book Sleeve Pattern is that these sleeves are really quick to make and beginner friendly too! Simple stitches and colorful yarn really make for a quick and satisfying project! The free pattern is easy to follow, so this colorful book sleeve will be done before you know it! Ready in no time, to protect your favorite reads.
How does your crocheting time change in the summer? Normally, I love to listen to an audiobook while I crochet, or watch the latest movie on Amazon Prime! But with the kids home during the summer I often find myself crocheting outdoors, while they swim and play. Little ones need that fresh air and exercise, and I suppose I should occasionally exercise something other than my wrists too, HBU? 😎 TBH, I think one of my favorite things about crocheting is that you can pick up your project and take it anywhere with you!!

STEP 1: Finish last stitch but do NOT sl st to join. Cut yarn, leave a 8 inch tail and pull on the loop on your hook until the yarn end pulls through. Thread the yarn end on an embroidery needle, or just use your hook.
STEP 2: From the front of your work, pass the yarn under the front and back loops of the first stitch of the round.
STEP 3: From the back of your work, pass the needle over the back loop of the last stitch and through the middle space between the front and back loop. Invisible join complete!
NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Book sleeves are worked in the round from the bottom up. Cap is worked directly on top of stem with increases and decreases on ends to shape it.
- Spots are worked in the round and sewn to the cap. Optional strap is worked in rows and stitched onto the book sleeve.
- Make your Mushie into a bag with strap directions included at the end.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch. So the 1st stitch of each round should be placed in the same space as the beginning chain 1.
- Sl st only count as a stitch on the final round of cap.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
- Place all stitches between ( and ) in the same space.

HANDLE LENGTH: Handles can be made to measure, or use the counts listed below. Handle Gauge is: 11 sc x 12 rows = 4” square using J/10 6.0 mm Hook. So adding/removing 3 rows will add or subtract an inch of length from the handle.

SHOULDER STRAP: (28 inches)
Row 1: Leave a long tail, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 3 chs, turn, (4 sc).
Rows 2-84: Ch 1 (optional – see TIP above), sc in each st, turn, (4 sc, 83 rows). FO and leave a long tail. Continue with Sewing Strap below.
CROSSBODY STRAP: (3 Lengths: SHORT 42 in, MEDIUM 48 in, LONG 54 in)
ALL CROSSBODY LENGTHS: Row 1: Leave a long tail, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 3 sts, turn, (4 sc).

MEDIUM: Rows 2-144: Ch 1 (optional – see TIP above), sc in each st, turn, (4 sc, 143 rows). FO and leave a long tail. Continue with Sewing Strap below.
LONG: Rows 2-162: Ch 1 (optional – see TIP above), sc in each st, turn, (4 sc, 161 rows). FO and leave a long tail. Continue with Sewing Strap below.
SEW STRAP TO MUSHROOM BAG:
Step 1: Count 4 sts (Small) or 5 sts (Medium) from the button loop on both sides and mark them. The next 4 stitches along the 2 ends of the opening are where you’ll stitch the straps. Count forward (toward the front) 4 sts and mark the next (fifth stitch) on each end. The 4 stitches on each end between the markers are where the strap should be attached.
STEP 2: Use yarn tail and running stitch (or whipstitch) to secure the strap to the 4 marked sts of the mushroom cap opening. For security, stitch the strap in place between Round 19-21 on the Small size and Rounds 23-25 on the Medium Size. Repeat on the other end of the strap. I stitched my strap to the outside of the cap, you can stitch your strap on the inside if you prefer. Weave in ends.
