Summer Fun Tote Baskets
Crochet Along and FREE Crochet Pattern!
My goal was to create a pattern for our Summer Crochet Along that was as fun to make as the Sweet Stripes Market Bags last summer! I think I nailed it – let me know if you agree! TBH, y’all have made our previous Crochet Alongs so amazing, I couldn’t wait to create another new CAL for you! The Summer Fun Tote Baskets are so really fun and simple to work up, and are crazy versatile with how you can use them!! I just know you’re going to love this pattern and these easy crochet basket bags as much as I do! You can use these baskets to hold your plant babies or flowers, towels or toiletries, fruit or vegetables, or my favorite – to store and carry along your latest WIPs and crochet supplies!! Come crochet along with me and let’s make a Summer Tote Crochet Pattern!

Tote Basket Crochet Pattern!
What do you get when you combine 2 of my fave crochet projects – a basket and a bag? You get a Crochet Tote Basket! Where has this been all my life??? What’s not to love? You have the sturdiness of a basket – firm walls that stay open and it works up so quick with the double stranded yarn! Then you have the generous handles of a tote bag, and the round shape makes it perfect for taking on the go. You may or may not know that one of my fave things to use as a “WIP/project bag” are my crocheted baskets. So we just took that a step further and made a basket that is a bag, and I assure you as I was designing the shape and size of these I was 100% thinking will this make it an even better project bag?? I even added a pocket, because we all know how essential those are! You can absolutely add more than one to your tote bags too, NO ONE can stop you, and I would encourage you to do so! I’m an enabler like that!!
So which one do YOU love best – baskets or bags? No, you don’t really have to choose. 😅 I couldn’t! If you love one or the other, or most likely both, then you will want to check out my other basket and bag patterns! Because this list is *ahem* loooong at this point in time, I’m only going to include the ones that can also double as totes and project bags. Let’s start with the baskets! Looking for a big basket because you’re making a large project? Then you need my Pop of Color Basket Pattern! If you live for the look of buffalo plaid or gingham (hello trends that we love), then you need my Buffalo Plaid Basket Pattern! My Hometown Holiday Baskets are perfect for decorating (or gifting) all winter long – choose a snowflake or pine tree pattern! Now moving on to the bags!
Without further ado, here are my favorite Bag patterns that can double as a project bag, and work great as a tote bag too! Last summer’s CAL Pattern, the Sweet Stripes Market Tote Bag is without a doubt a fabulous tote and project bag – and with 3 sizes you can make the perfect one for any job or project! We can’t forget about the stunning Calliope Crossbody Boho Bag – this beauty lives up to her name and is generously sized to hold all you need on the go! There is also the Sweet Stripes Hobo Bag to consider – this is a stylish bag, but again the size allows you ample space to tuck in your latest WIP! Last but not least is the Sweet Stripes Zipper Pouches – this pattern has 4 sizes and the Large is the only one that can carry a project, but the smaller sizes are perfect for holding your essentials like hooks, stitch markers, and all the notions! So if you are as obsessed with bags and baskets as much as I am, make sure to check those other patterns out too!
Summer Tote Crochet Pattern!
One of my favorite things about the Summer Tote Crochet Pattern is that these basket tote bags are really quick to make! Double stranded yarn really makes for a quick and sturdy make!! You can make the small in an evening or two, and the Medium and Large will take you a few longer evenings, or a nice long (air conditioned) movie marathon crochet session! (That’s where you’ll find me this summer!) The stitches are super simple, so this sturdy market tote crochet pattern will be done before you know it! With 3 weeks to complete your CAL you will have no trouble crocheting a basket or the whole set of baskets to store all your current WIPs! 🤷♀️ What, doesn’t everyone have multiple WIPs going?? 🤣 These modern crochet bags are perfect for your next trip to the farmer’s market, perfect for tossing toys into for the kids to keep in the car or on a road trip, and it’s a fantastic Beach tote crochet pattern too! How will you use your Summer Tote Basket?
How does your crochet time change in the summer? Normally, I love to listen to an audiobook while I crochet, or watch the latest movie on Amazon Prime! But with the kids home during the summer I often find myself crocheting outside while they swim and play. Little ones need that fresh air and exercise, and I suppose I should occasionally exercise something other than my wrists too, HBU? 😎 TBH, I think one of my favorite things about crocheting is that you can pick up your project and take it anywhere with you!!
Need some help with the stitches? I provide photo tutorials within the pattern to help you with the included techniques and more! I am always happy to help you with any questions you may have! Don’t crochet yet? I’d love to help you Learn to Crochet with my fun Crochet Tutorials!

sl st – slip stitch
ch(s) – chain(s)
sc – single crochet
yo – yarn over
FO – fasten off
Puff st – See tutorial below. DO NOT CH 1 AFTER PUFF STITCH!!
Special Stitches:
Puff st: Yo, insert hook in st indicated, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and insert hook in same st, yo and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yo and insert hook in same st, yo and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 7 loops on hook, BUT DO NOT CH 1. Puff st complete. Skipping the ch 1 keeps the basket walls smoother with fewer gaps.
NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Basket, Handles, and Pocket are all worked holding 2 strands of worsted weight yarn together.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch. So the 1st stitch of each round should be placed in the same space as the beginning chain 1.
- Sl st only count as a stitch on the final round of each basket.
- Do NOT chain 1 after each puff stitch. This allows for fewer gaps in the basket walls.
- Pattern is worked in joined rounds. Basket is worked in the round, and the pocket is worked in rows, then sewn to the inside of the basket.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
- This pattern is FREE to view and read on my website ONLY, and has been thoroughly tested and tech edited. Please feel free to share any comments or ask any questions you may have! I welcome your feedback!!
