Crochet Bag Patterns
I am curious if your level of bag obsession is close to mine? 😉 Because I am a bag hoarder, full confession! I buy them, make them, buy patterns to make them, make patterns to make them… I even sell project bags and hook bags in my Etsy shop! I’m almost embarrassed to admit how many I own/have made… it’s not really a problem, right? 😬
So if you love the Sweet Stripes Collection, then you will be over the moon to know that this is the 6th Sweet Stripes Bag Pattern that I have designed! If you like a classic and multi-functional bag, then you need to make the Sweet Stripes Market Tote with 3 great sizes, and 2 handle length options. What’s not to love? If you swoon over zippered pouches and aren’t afraid to sew on a zipper (it’s not that hard, trust me!), then you need to make the Sweet Stripes Zipper Pouches in not 1 but all 4 different sizes! If you’re into reducing your waste, or not wasting your hard earned cash, then you will be in love with the Sweet Stripes Gift Bags, which have 4 versatile sizes that you can use to wrap almost anything, over and over again!!
What if you’re a wine lover? (Me too! 🍷) Well you can make the Sweet Stripes Wine Tote which has 3 versatile options so you can gift or carry 1 or 2 bottles of wine with style and ease! Last but not least, if a backpack is more your style, well then the Sweet Stripes Backpack will be the perfect project for you! Made with bulky yarn, this pattern works up quickly in Mini or Full size, and has several options for creating your ideal straps too! (We love options around here 😉) Plus let’s not forget the gorgeous Calliope Crossbody Boho Bag which is both amazing and roomy and utilizes a fabulous stitch that keeps it from needing a liner! It’s not a Sweet Stripes pattern, but we love it just the same. Read on to learn more about the latest bag pattern too!

Modern Crochet Purse
The Sweet Stripes Hobo Handbag Pattern has 2 components but I made the bag itself as simple as possible. Both parts are worked in the round, and you will simply place the liner inside and sew them together at the top. Then the only other sewing is the button flap and the button, easy peasy y’all! I did rate the pattern as intermediate just because of the shaping at the top of the bag and the liner is made with linked double crochets, which is an intermediate stitch, but so easy to learn! The liner will take the longest, but it is sooo worth it. Not only does it keep everything inside the bag for you, but it gives these gorgeous little pops of color through the openings in the Sweet Stripes Stitch™ that are just TDF!
This crochet purse and the liner are both pretty simple and easy to make on repeat once you get going. This is definitely a Netflix and chill (my fave!) type of project so I highly recommend binging on your fave series on Netflix or Prime Video, or pick a new, bingeable audiobook, while working on your crochet shoulder bag! I am currently listening to Blood of Elves The Witcher Book #3 on Audible and I highly recommend it and the whole series! And when you’re done listening you can watch the series on Netflix. Yess! I want you to love making and using your Sweet Stripes Hobo Bag™ as much as I love mine! 💜

Make a Chunky Hobo Bag!
This modern hobo handbag crochet pattern is perfect for an intermediate crocheter or a confident advanced beginner who is ready to tackle a bit of shaping, sewing and the linked double crochet stitch! I have included photo tutorials for adding the liner and crocheting the linked double crochet. You will be able to confidently say you KNOW how to make and follow a crochet purse tutorial once you’ve completed the pattern!
Here’s what you need to get started: 220-220 yards of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick or your choice of Super Bulky weight 6 yarn for the outer bag, and 350-400 yards of Lion Brand Mandala, or your choice of DK weight 3 yarn for the liner. You will need a M/N/13 9.0 mm crochet hook for the Outer Bag, and a G/6 4.0 mm crochet hook for the bag liner. ← I highly recommend this gorgeous beauty! My 100% go to hooks are Furls Streamline Resin Hooks, I loved using mine to create this sturdy crochet purse! You will also need a 1.5” button for closing the bag.
Below are the yarns I used to create my samples! For this project I used Charcoal Wool-Ease T&Q and Mothra Mandala and they are a stunning combination!! 😍 I think you will have a LOT of fun choosing your colors for this project. The peek-a boo effect of the purse liner gives you an opportunity to use a bright or fun color, while also choosing an outer yarn that will go with anything!
