If your tree is loaded with ornaments from your grandma’s collection, lean into grandma chic and create new handmade pieces that blend right in. If your decor runs natural with lots of wood and greenery, the woodland patterns will work best. Gnome collectors, y’all already know which section is yours. And if you want one small change with big impact, plaid (or tartan) is a fun trend to introduce. Hook one basket or a couple ornaments in black watch colors and see how it feels. July or August is honestly perfect. Starting now gives you months to make a whole batch of decorations and gifts, without the December panic. If you sell at craft fairs, most sellers build their stock in late summer and early fall, then restock the best sellers through November. Start early and you’ll actually enjoy the season instead of having anxiety over it.
What's the best yarn for crochet Christmas ornaments?
It depends on the look you want. Cotton holds its shape and shows off stitch definition, so it’s great for flat pieces like the horseshoe and baubles. Acrylic is soft and cheap and comes in every color, which makes it ideal for gnomes and amigurumi. For most ornaments on this list, worsted weight in either fiber works fine.
How do you stiffen crochet ornaments so they hold their shape?
For cotton pieces, a light spray of fabric stiffener or a 50/50 mix of white glue and water does the trick. Pin the piece into shape and let it dry overnight. One heads-up: acrylic yarn won’t take starch, so if you need a stiff finish, craft your ornament with cotton yarn.
Can I wash crochet Christmas decorations?
Gently, yes. Hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry, especially for anything with stuffing, beads, or metallic thread. Hand wash, don’t use the machine as it can pull stitches loose and flatten the shape. Pro Tip! If you stiffened a piece, washing softens it, so you may need to re-starch it afterward.
