Quick & Easy Crochet Bookmark!
New Free Sweet Stripes Bookmark Pattern
This easy crochet bookmark pattern uses my unique Sweet Stripes Stitch to create a quick little make that can easily be hooked with your scrap yarn. It’s thin and perfect for slipping between your current reads without damaging or bulking up the pages.
And yes… I named this one too. Of course I did. If you’ve been here for five minutes you already know I can’t help myself! Five kids, a busy house, and a brain running on equal parts coffee and chaos… naming my new projects just keeps things fun. So this one is called the SS Sanity… because reading is one of the few ways we stay sane. And SS is my abbreviation for Sweet Stripes. So there you go! Make yourself some crochet sanity too!
This free crochet bookmark pattern is great for beginners and up. Using only basic stitches and simple row repeats, this small project works up fast! Which makes it perfect for last-minute gifts for kids, teachers, or anyone who loves to read. The Sweet Stripes Stitch gives it an interesting texture, and it stays flat between the pages to avoid any unwanted crease marks.

Choosing the Right Yarn for Your Bookmark
I feel that bookmarks behave much better when made with a thinner yarn. Since the goal is a page marker that sits neatly inside a book without stretching the spine or leaving dents in the paper, yarn weight matters more here than in most small projects.
Sport, DK, and fingering weight cotton are all great choices for this quick bookmark pattern. Cotton will hold shape beautifully, and won’t fluff up after being tucked into pages over and over. If cotton isn’t in your stash, a smooth acrylic or bamboo blend works too – just pick something light and not too stretchy.
A smaller hook will help the Sweet Stripes Stitch stay compact, giving you a bookmark that feels sturdy but slim enough to slip between chapters without a fight. Plush yarns and anything bulky are best saved for other projects, since they’ll hide the stitch and struggle to stay flat.
Why You’ll Love This Free & Easy Crochet Bookmark Pattern
This little bookmark is a fun small project to practice the Sweet Stripes Stitch! This is my textured, beginner-friendly stitch that looks fancy without too much fuss. It’s a quick make, a great scrap-buster, and an easy gift for anyone who always has their nose in a book.
Here are a few reasons I think you’ll want to add this free pattern to your library:
Slim & Kind to Your Pages: This stitch creates a lightweight strip that sits between your pages without bending, bulking, or damage.
Eye-Catching: The Sweet Stripes Stitch mixes simple stitches in a clever way, creating a striped, textured fabric that looks smart but isn’t too difficult.
Gift-Ready: This pattern works up fast and makes thoughtful, handmade gifts for bookworms, kids, and your book club buddies.
Fun but Not Fussy: Perfect for adventurous beginners who want to try something new without taking on a big project.
Great for Scraps: A little yarn goes a long way here — ideal for using up leftover bits in your favorite color combos.
Easy to Tote Around: It’s a small project you can keep in your bag for travel days, appointments, or those rare quiet moments.
Bonus! Keep it forever!

The Best Yarn for the Sweet Stripes Bookmark Pattern!
You want your crocheted bookmark to be at it’s best, especially when gifting. I recommend Lightweight (sport 2 or dk 3) yarn, especially cotton, for ease of use and durability. Cotton yarn is sturdy, will last without pilling, and is strong enough to hold its shape without stretching. It’s also lightweight, making it a practical option for shipping too!
The yarn I selected for this free bookmark crochet pattern is called Premier Hipster Cotton. It is a fun variegated DK (3) weight yarn that I stock in my yarn shop and not only do I love it, but it’s one of our most popular yarns in the shop!
Cottonoft DK is a soft and durable cotton yarn. This lovely yarn offers beautiful stitch definition and is truly a pleasure to work with! It is durable and comes in a stunning range of colors from brights, to pastels, to neutrals – currently 52 shades to choose from. 💜

Finishing Bookmark:
ADD FRINGE:
Step 1: Cut 18 (9 for each end) strands of yarn about 6 inches long.
Step 2: Insert hook upward through any of the stitches on the top of the bookmark. Place the center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it through the stitch creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten. Repeat for each of the remaining 8 yarn strands.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for the 9 strands on the bottom of the bookmark.
Step 4: Then trim the ends evenly. My ends are about 2 inches long.
ADD TASSEL:
Step 1: Cut 6 strands of yarn about 12 inches long.
Step 2: Insert hook upward through any of the 6 stitches on the top of the bookmark. Place the center of a piece of yarn over the hook and pull it through the stitch creating a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tug gently at the ends to tighten.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for each of the 5 yarn strands, placing one in each of the 6 stitches. Step 4: Group strands into 3 groups of 4, and braid about 2 inches.
Step 5: Tie off the ends in one of 2 ways. 1) Tie the end in single overhand knot, leaving the braid as long or short as you like. -OR- 2) Cut an additional length of yarn 4-6 inches. Lay the yarn under the end of the braid and tie a tight double (square) knot around the braid.
Step 6: Trim the ends evenly. My braid is about 1.5 inches and tassel and knot are about 2 inches together. Adjust yours as you like.
CORNER BOOKMARK FINISH:
STITCH CORNERS TOGETHER:
Step 1: Place the 2 corners together, with the second corner with the working yarn closer to you. Ch 1, working through both corner pieces, work 11 sc evenly down the side.
Step 2: Work (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in first ch sp working through both corner pieces, rotate and work 11 sc evenly down the other side, (1 ch-1, 26 sc). FO and weave in ends.
