Free Calliope Crochet Wine Bottle Holder Pattern!
It’s no secret that I love a glass of wine, and I love color! So, a stashbusting pattern for a wine bottle carrier came to mind pretty quickly for this project. In fact I may or may not have been drinking a glass of red when I sketched out the design.
The free Calliope Crochet Wine Bottle Holder Pattern fits a standard 750ml bottle, and if you’re feeling a bit extra? Will stretch to fit 1 Liter bottles! You’ll find it’s snug enough to hold the bottle securely, but not so tight that you’re wrestling with it. Just slip the bottle into the carrier and you’re good to go!
The whole pattern is based on my fun Calliope version of granny squares, so it works up fast and looks adorable. Plus, it’s a scrappy project, which means you can use what you’ve got on hand, or shop for the perfect yarn, either way it to makes the best Christmas gift! Just add a bottle of vino!
Fair warning: once you make one, you’ll want to make a dozen. Guess what every one of my kids teachers are getting for their thank you gift this year?!!
Say HI to me and my mom and sister at one of our favorite wineries!!! 👇

PIN FOR LATER!
The Story Behind the Calliope Stitch
So, what’s the deal with this whole Calliope thing anyway? Great question! The Calliope wheel started as a wild idea I had for a boho-inspired bag – I wanted something that had all the cozy vibes of a traditional granny square but with way more personality and pop. That’s how the Calliope wheel was born, and honestly, I’ve been obsessed ever since.
The journey kicked off with the Calliope Crossbody Boho Bag – a colorful summer staple that ended up being a total hit. I used linked stitches to give it structure (no liner needed!), and it was roomy enough to work as both a day bag and a project bag. Win-win!
From there, things got a little out of hand (in the best way). The Calliope wheel started showing up everywhere – in Calliope Wash Cloths (both round and square versions!), then Calliope Coasters with adorable picot edging that one tester said looked like tiny plant pots. So naturally, I designed a matching pot pattern because why not?
Then came the wildest twist: the Calliope No-Sew Turtle Amigurumi! The colorful wheel became a removable turtle shell, and it was perfect for anyone who loves amigurumi but hates all that sewing. Talk about a fun challenge – but don’t worry, the free pattern has tons of photo tutorials to walk you through it!
After that came the Calliope Mandala Wall Hanging, followed by the super versatile 2-in-1 Calliope Festival Pouch & Crossbody. That one gives you both a crossbody bag AND a drawstring pouch in the same pattern – perfect for concerts, markets, or just carrying your essentials hands-free. One holds your phone and keys, the other can stash your dice, tarot cards, or whatever little treasures you’re into!
More recently I joined in with a super fun blog hop and created the Calliope Crochet Granny Square 12×12! That pattern brought the Calliope wheel together with traditional granny square techniques in a whole new way – kind of like what we’re doing here with this wine bag, but on a bigger scale. The 12-inch square is perfect for blankets, pillows, or bags, and it’s been such a hit with y’all!
And now? We’re coming full circle with this wine bag, bringing Calliope back to her granny square roots in the most festive way possible. The fun is just getting started, trust me!
Oh, and BTW – every single Calliope pattern is free to view right here on the blog! If you want an ad-free PDF for printing, those are available on Etsy and Ravelry too.
Enjoy and Happy Hooking! 💜🧶

PATTERN NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch, so first stitch of each row should be placed in the same stitch as beginning chain.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
- Work stitches between ( and ) in the same stitch.
- I alternated colors Jade, Bayleaf, Purple between each round for each square, and in sections of the bag bottom and top. I switched my color to Silver for the final round of each square, for seaming squares and sections together. Then I used Silver for the bottom and tops of bag.
- Colors can be dropped + carried between rounds. New colors should be joined in last stitch of the previous round at the final pull through for the final stitch.
- For seamless color changes, pull new color through on the final yarn over of slip stitch join at the end of each round.
- Blocking each square before continuing is strongly recommended.

FAQs About Crochet Wine Bottle Holders
What is the best yarn for a crochet bottle holder?
For a crochet bottle holder, I recommend using a sturdy worsted weight yarn like Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton. Cotton yarn works great if you want a sturdy, durable and eco-friendly yarn! The key is to use something durable that can handle the weight of a full bottle. For this Calliope Wine Bottle Bag, worsted weight yarn gives you the perfect balance of structure and drape.
How many inches is a wine bottle?
Standard wine bottles (750 mL) are typically about 11-12 inches tall and roughly 3 inches in diameter. The Calliope crochet wine bottle holder pattern is designed to fit these standard bottles perfectly, with a little wiggle room for slightly different shapes. If you’re making a crochet bottle bag for other types of bottles (like sparkling wine or champagne), you might need to adjust the sizing!
How to present a wine bottle as a gift?
Honestly, presenting wine in a handmade crocheted wine bottle carrier is such a thoughtful touch! Just slip the bottle into your finished wine bag, and you’re instantly giving TWO gifts instead of one. You can add a gift tag to the handle, tie a ribbon around the neck of the bottle, or even tuck in some holiday treats alongside the bottle. For extra pizzazz, pair it with a matching crochet wine glass cozies or some wine charms!
How to make a crochet bottle pouch?
Making a crochet bottle bag is easier than you might think! To crochet a bottle holder, you’ll want to start with a base that fits the bottom of your bottle, then work in rounds to create the sides. For the Calliope Wine Bottle Bag, we’re using granny squares joined together for that scrappy, colorful look! Add a handle at the top, and you’re done. If you’re looking for a crochet bottle holder free pattern, there are tons of options out there – including this one! This easy crochet wine bottle pattern walks you through every step with clear instructions.
Can you crochet a bottle holder or wine cozy?
Absolutely! A crochet wine bottle holder is actually one of the most practical and giftable projects you can make. Wine cozies are usually fitted sleeves that hug the bottle, while bottle holders (like this Calliope bag design) have handles for carrying. Both are super fun to make and work up quickly. Plus, you can customize them with any colors you love!
Are crochet wine bottle holders sustainable?
Yes! Making a crocheted wine bottle carrier is actually a great eco-friendly choice. Instead of using disposable gift wrap or plastic bags, you’re creating a reusable holder that can be used over and over again. Plus, if you’re using up yarn scraps (like with this stash-busting pattern), you’re giving new life to materials you already have. It’s a win for the planet and your stash!
How much yarn do you need for a wine bottle holder?
For most crochet wine bottle holder patterns, you’ll need approximately 150-250 yards of worsted weight yarn total. For scrappy projects like the Calliope Wine Bottle Bag, you can use less than 100 yards of each color – perfect for using up those odds and ends! If you want to make a Christmas crochet wine bottle cozy with a single color, one skein (usually around 250-300 yards) should be plenty. Always check your specific pattern for exact yardage requirements!
Can I use this pattern for other bottles?
Sure! While this pattern is designed for standard wine bottles, you can easily adapt it for water bottles, champagne bottles, or even gift bags for other items. Just adjust the base size and height to fit whatever you’re planning to carry. That’s the beauty of free crochet canteen holder patterns and free wine bottle cover patterns – they’re super versatile!
