Granny Calliope Free Blanket Square Pattern!
For my contribution to the Granny Stitch Blanket Collab, I wanted to create something that felt connected to my signature Calliope stitch but still celebrated the classic granny square we all love. The result is my Granny Meets Calliope Square; a 12×12 design that blends tradition with texture in the most satisfying way.
The simple square is made up of four smaller blocks: two different variations of my own unique Calliope Design, joined together to form a bold, balanced pattern. The circular rhythm of Calliope meets the timeless clusters of the granny, creating a look that feels familiar yet fresh and modern. I had fun experimenting with color placement to make each section stand out, and I love how the alternating squares almost feel like they’re in conversation with one another.
Each stitch reminds me why I love collaborative projects like this. It’s a creative meeting point; the old and new stitched side by side, simple techniques coming together to make something special. If you’re new to crochet, this square is a wonderful way to learn both styles while building confidence and enjoying the process. You’ll be supported with live videos, photos and charts, to create each stitch of this blanket.

About the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL
How it Works:
I have such fond memories of staying at my grandparents house. They made so much from scratch, gardened and canned, because well, that’s just how they lived! At night we’d have handmade blankets and quilts on our beds, for breakfast we’d have homemade jelly on toast from the farmers market, bake cookies, and during the days we’d wear hand knitted socks with our boots.
So when I heard about the collaborative Ultimate Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL by Madame Stitch, I knew I had to join the fun! Granny Squares carry with them so much nostalgia! Y’all are going to love this FREE collaborative Blanket crochet-along inspired by the classic retro granny square, too! But trust me, there’s plenty of modern takes on the design and they all come together beautifully!
Each 12×12 crochet square in the blanket, has been designed by a different designer. Each square is aimed at a different skill level, so that you, everyone and anyone can crochet along with each of us every week! Some designs are rated intermediate, but with the video and photo tutorials, you’ll be able to up level your skills!
It might surprise you, just how versatile the classic granny stitch can be! I promise that even those that have been crocheting for years, will discover the granny stitch being used in ways you’ve never seen before!
Each week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday a new blanket square for the CAL will be released on the designer’s blog for FREE. There will be a total of 12 sections with a different look and take on the granny stitch pattern. Together the squares make a stunning blanket to show off and snuggle under.

Who Is this Calliope You Speak Of?
The Calliope stitch began as an idea for a boho‑inspired handbag. The Calliope Wheel is my own original design inspired by traditional granny squares, but with a fresh twist that’s full of color and texture. That’s how the Calliope wheel first came to life.
The very first pattern to feature this design was the Calliope Crossbody Boho Bag — a vibrant summer accessory that quickly became a favorite. Built with linked stitches for extra structure, it held its shape beautifully without needing a liner. Its roomy size made it perfect as a day bag or even a project bag for crocheters on the go. Yes!
After that, I couldn’t stop at just one design. The Calliope wheel soon turned up in new patterns, like the Calliope Wash Cloths, which included both round and square versions for even more ways to use the motif.
The Calliope Coasters followed next, blending elements from the original and the wash cloths. One tester mentioned they looked like they could sit inside a little plant pot thanks to the picot edging, so I added a matching pot pattern for a sweet storage set.
The biggest twist yet came with the Calliope No-Sew Turtle Amigurumi! The colorful Calliope wheel became the turtle’s removable shell, making it a hit for anyone who loves no‑sew amigurumi projects. I do love a fun challenge like this one – and you’ll love the detailed instructions and many photo tutorials to guide you through this adorable pattern!
From there, the Calliope Mandala Wall Hanging joined the collection, and now the newest release is the Calliope Festival Pouch. This design combines a crochet crossbody bag and a free drawstring pouch pattern, both worked from the same vibrant motif. It’s a fun way to use up scraps, experiment with colors, and make something cute for summer markets, concerts, or gifting.
After that was the quick and versatile 2-in-1 Calliope Festival Pouch & Crossbody, which includes both a crochet crossbody bag pattern and a free drawstring pouch pattern in one design! Use one to hold your essentials hand-free while you enjoy life to the fullest unencumbered! Use the other to hold you fave trinkets like dice, minis, tarot cards, and more. Now you have TWO crossbody bag pattern options!
And now here we are bringing Calliope back to her roots with a full mashup of Calliope and Granny Squares. Calliope Meets Granny, and she’s never going back. The fun is just getting started here, I promise!
Not to mention, every one of the Calliope wheel patterns are free to view here on the blog, with optional ad‑free PDFs available on Etsy and Ravelry if you prefer a printable version.
Enjoy and Happy Hooking! 💜🧶
Make your Granny Stitch Free Blanket Pattern!
** I designed my sample square in one of my favorite yarns – Furls Wander, this summer. But unfortunately since that time the yarn has been discontinued. So sad! So I’m going to give you my suggested yarn colors and options in another favorite yarn – Lion Brand Heartland, which is also the yarn that Debbie, our lovely host of the event created her finished blanket with! So the yarns below under Materials are what I would use to get similar colors to the sample images, that will look lovely together!

PATTERN NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch, so first stitch of each row should be placed in the same stitch as beginning chain.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] or { and } the number of times indicated.
- Work stitches between ( and ) in the same stitch.
- I alternated colors (Green and Blue) between each round for both squares. I switched my color to Purple for the final round of each. Then I used Purple for the seams and for the finished square edging.
- For seamless color changes, pull new color through on the final yarn over of slip stitch join at the end of each round.
- Blocking each square individually, then blocking the final seamed square is strongly recommended.
- This is a crochet pattern for creating a 12” x 12” blanket square. You can use your finished square however you like.
- Previous knowledge of crochet is assumed.
- This Calliope Crochet Granny Square Pattern guide was created as part of a collaborative crochet along for the Ultimate Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL with Debbie Field of Madame Stitch and more talented crochet designers!

Crochet Granny Square Pattern Testers!
I feel so lucky to have such an amazing group of pattern testers. They worked hard to bring the Calliope designs to life, including the newest Calliope Meets Granny Square pattern for beginners. Their feedback helped refine the instructions and make sure every step was clear and beginner‑friendly.
Seeing the beautiful versions they created is one of my favorite parts of designing. Each tester brought their own colors and style, turning the crochet granny square pattern into something unique while still showing off the fun granny‑style motif.
A huge thank you to Kami Jones, Joanne Melling, Linda Woodthorpe, Carol Schupp, and Robin Quade for testing and sharing their work.

Round 6 work scs into each st and ch-1 sp, work (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in each ch-2 sp.
Round 6 (RS): Ch 1, [sc in next 11 sts, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc,) in ch-2 sp, sc in next 8 sts,] 4 times, sl st to join, (4 ch-2 sp, 92 sc.) FO and weave in ends. Continue with seaming squares.
Seaming Squares:
BLOCKING INDIVIDUAL SQUARES BEFORE SEAMING IS RECOMMENDED!
Directions are given below for a flat slip stitch seam. If not using the slip stitch method, I recommend a mattress stitch or whipstitch for the cleanest join for your squares.
SEAM: Holding 2 squares right sides together, use seaming method/stitch of your choice to stitch the squares together. Repeat for the other pair. Then take the 2 pairs of squares with right sides facing and stitch them together.
Flat (Surface) Slip Stitch Seam: (Work in BLO of each square)
STEP 1: Lay 2 squares side by side. Begin in the (ch-2 sp) corner of the square on the side of your dominant hand. Working from front to back, insert hook through BLO of the corner ch nearest to the edge you will be seaming. Then insert hook through BLO of same ch in the other square. Make a slip knot with the working yarn, on the end of the hook, and pull the slip knot through both loops. 1st slip stitch complete.
STEP 2: Insert hook, front to back through BLO of next st on the dominant hand square, then through the BLO of the next st on the other square. Then yo with the working yarn and pull through all 3 loops on the hook, slip stitch completed.
STEP 3: Repeat Step 2 for each stitch along the sides of the seam, finishing with the first ch of the (ch-2 sp) corner. You can FO here, or continue to seam the next 2 squares.
STEP 4: To connect the next 2 squares, place them in front of the seamed squares. Repeat Step 1, inserting hook front to back through the BLO of same ch on the (ch-2 sp) corner in the next square on your dominant hand side, then the same for the other square. Yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook. Repeat Step 2 for each st down the seam, finishing with the first ch of the (ch-2 sp) corner. FO and weave in ends.
STEP 5: Repeat Steps 1-4 to slip stitch the squares together along the other seam, you can just work right over the top of the other seam at the center to work on the final seam for the second 2 squares. At the end, FO and weave in ends. Continue with Edging.
FINISHED SQUARE EDGING:
On Edging, first sc on the side after the corner may be covered by the last sc of the corner.
Join yarn to any corner, in the ch-2 sp. Ch 1, [(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in next 23 sts, sc in ch-2 sp, sc in join, sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 23 sts,] 4 times, invisible join, (4 ch-2 sps, 204 sc). FO and weave in the ends. Blocking finished square is highly recommended!
