Easy Crochet Backpack
What is your level of bag obsession? Do you like bags… or is more like bordering on a problem… because you have so many you just keep buying more yarn to fill them? 😉 I am a bag hoarder, full confession! I buy them, make them, buy patterns to make them, make patterns to make them… I even sell project bags and hook bags in my Etsy shop! I’m just a girl who loves bags, it’s not really a problem I swear… 🤷♀️
So if you’re anything like me (you don’t have to admit it 😉) you will want to check out the other crochet bag patterns I designed this year! If you love the Sweet Stripes Collection, then you will be thrilled that there are already 3 other Sweet Stripes Bag Patterns! If you like a basic and classic bag, then you need to make the Sweet Stripes Market Tote with 3 great sizes, and 2 handle length options! If you are a pouch lover, the hold on to your zippers because you can make the fab Sweet Stripes Zipper Pouches in not 1 but 4 different size! Last but not least, if you’re into reducing your waste, or not wasting your cash then you will be in love with the Sweet Stripes Gift Bags, which have 4 versatile sizes that you can wrap almost anything in, again and again!! Plus let’s not forget the gorgeous Calliope Crossbody Boho Bag which is both amazing and roomy and utilizes a fabulous stitch that keeps it from needing a liner!

Simple Crochet Backpack
Speaking of bag obsessions… have you ever sewn a bag? I have sewn lots of bags too, so shocking, I know! 😆 But the one thing about sewn bags and patterns is that they can get really complicated. They’re cool, and functional, and professional… but if I’m honest with myself I really love simple patterns. That’s why I made this crochet backpack pattern as simple as possible, it has options of course because that’s just who I am, but the construction is simple and I hope you appreciate that – my testers did!
The Sweet Stripes Backpack Pattern includes 2 sizes – Mini Backpack and Full Size Backpack, so you can make the size that’s right for your needs! I’ve also included a few options for making the straps, I just love options! If you like to keep things simple then you will love the simple, sewn on straps. If you want to get a bit fancier, you can opt for the d-ring straps, or the adjustable length d-ring straps! There are also 2 width options (1″ and 1.5″), because d-rings come in different sizes so you can make the straps that are the perfect fit! The bag includes diagrams and clear instructions for all straps styles and attachment methods too!
The bag and strap construction are both simple, and involve easy repeats of basic stitches. This is definitely a Netflix and chill (ie. crochet) type of project so I highly recommend binging on your fave series on Netflix or Prime Video, or dive into a new audiobook, while working on your crochet backpack and straps! I am currently listenting to Billy Summers by Stepen King on Audible and I absolutely recommend it! You will want to take care and a bit more focus when attaching the straps. Yess! I want you to love making and using your Sweet Stripes Crochet Backpack as much as I love mine! 💜

Make a Drawstring Backpack!
This drawstring backpack crochet pattern is perfect for an intermediate crocheter or a confident advanced beginner who is ready to tackle simple strap construction! I have included diagrams and photo tutorials for the construction and placement of the straps on the bag. You will be able to confidently say you KNOW how to make and follow a crochet backpack tutorial once you’ve completed the pattern!
Here’s what you need to get started: Mini Backpack 150-200 yards, Full Size Backpack 220-280 yards of Bernat Velvet/ Crushed Velvet Yarn or your choice of Bulky/Chunky weight 5 yarn for the backpack, and 90-160 yards of Red Heart Super Saver, or your choice of sturdy worsted/aran weight 4 yarn for the straps. You will need a L/11 7.0 mm crochet hook for the backpack, and a G/6 4.0 mm crochet hook for the straps. ← I highly recommend this gorgeous beauty! My 100% go to hooks are the Furls Streamline Resin Hook, they are bae! Other optional components include 30”-40” of cord for your drawstring and a toggle button, and 4x d-rings either 1” or 1.5” will work for this project! Lastly, 2-4x 1” buttons if you want to make the adjustable straps.
Below are the yarns I used to create my samples! Bernat Crushed Velvet has an amazing 90s throwback vibe that I could not resist! My 10th grade 90s teen self would have died and gone to heaven with this crushed velvet backpack! For this project I used Burgundy and Deep Gray and I loooooved both of them!! 😍 For sturdy yarn for my straps my go to yarn is always Red Heart Super Saver! It does the job and holds strong with little stretching, and the way we make the straps is designed with that in mind too! I used RHSS in Black and Dark Orchid for my samples!
