Why This is the Narrow Winter Scarf You’ll Keep Wearing
I don’t know about y’all, but I live in Minnesota and winter lasts about 9 months here 😉 or at least scarf weather does! So cold weather accessories are a necessity, and the Sweet Stripes Skinny Scarf is super versatile, so it is perfect for Winter, Fall, and Spring wear! This scarf works up pretty quickly and the repeats are simple so you can binge watch your favorite show or movie series and crank this one out!! Gotta love a good Netflix and crochet project!
Here’s what I love about a skinny scarf… it goes where you go. At 4 to 5 inches wide it sits flat under a coat collar instead of bunching up under your chin, so you can actually zip your jacket! It stays on when you walk into the store, and it doesn’t turn into a sweaty situation the second you’re indoors. Wrap it twice for the walk to the car, let it hang long once you’re inside. It’s made with worsted yarn, so it keeps you snuggly when the wind picks up, because narrow doesn’t mean thin, it means it fits well! Easy Crochet Kids Scarf Pattern in 3 Sizes
The Sweet Stripes Skinny Scarf comes with instructions to make a Small or Large Child and Adult sized scarf! Any of the 3 sizes can be made using less than 220 yards, or one skein of Red Heart Super Saver Stripes, or your favorite worsted weight yarn!
The child sizes are where this crochet kids scarf pattern really shows off the narrow width. A little kid already has a puffy coat, a hood, and a hat happening. A slim scarf goes under all of that without extra bulk or length swinging around at the playground. Making a set for the whole family? You can make them unique from one another or matching!

A Skinny Scarf with Fringe Options
The fringe is what uplevels this from a strip of fabric to a scarf. It hangs a few inches off each end, and it jiggles a little when you walk, which is half the point. On the child sizes it’s the detail kids notice first. You just know they’ll be playing with it!
You’ve got options here too. Trim it dead even for a sharp finish, or leave the ends a little uneven for a softer look. Want it shorter? Cut it back after it’s attached… much easier to take length off than to add it. And if fringe just isn’t your thing, skip it. The scarf is finished without it, it’ll just be a touch shorter, but of course you can add more rows to lengthen it. The versatility never ends with the Sweet Stripes Skinny Scarf!

- YARN: Red Heart Super Saver Ombré Worsted Weight 4 yarn, (100% Acrylic, 283 g/10 oz, 440 meters/482 yards) – OR – Red Heart Super Saver Stripes Worsted Weight 4 yarn, (100% Acrylic, 141 g/5 oz, 215 meters/236 yards)
- Sample Colors: Deep Teal Ombre, Retro Stripe, Polo Stripe
- Yardage: 125 – 225 yards
- HOOK Size:

CROCHET FRINGE SCARF PATTERN SIZES:
Small Child Scarf: 4’” wide x 40” long
Large Child Scarf: 4” wide x 50” long
Adult Scarf: 5” wide x 58” long

Pattern Stitches: Using US English Crochet terms
st(s) – stitch(es)
sp(s) – space(s)
sl st – slip stitch

PATTERN NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Beginning ch of SC rounds does NOT count as a stitch. First st of these rounds should be placed in the same st as the beginning chain.
- Slip stitch does not count as a stitch.
- Beginning ch of DC does count as stitch.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
- Place stitches between ( and ) in the same stitch.
- The scarf is worked back and forth in rows then an optional fringe is added at the end.

SWEET STRIPES Crochet Fringe Scarf Pattern
Pattern Directions:
Child Crochet Fringe Scarf Pattern:
- Finished size should be approximately:
- Small Child 4” wide and 40” long
- Large Child: 4” wide and 50” long.
Row 1: Ch 14, sc in back bump of 2nd ch from hook and each ch, (13 sc).
Rows 2-5: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st across, (13 sc, 4 rows).
Row 6: Turn, ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), (2 dc) in 1st st, skip next 3 sts, [4 dc in next st, skip next 3 st,] 2 times, (3 dc) in last st, (13 dc).
Rows 7-8: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st across, (13 sc, 2 rows).
Row 9: Repeat Row 6, (13 dc).
Rows 10-11: Repeat Rows 7-8, (13 sc, 2 rows).
SMALL CHILD SIZE:
Rows 12 – 102: Continue repeating Rows 6, 7, and 8, (13 sts, 91 rows).
Rows 103 – 105: Repeat Row 7, (13 sc 3 rows). Fasten off, leave a 5” tail.
LARGE CHILD SIZE:
Rows 12 – 125: Continue repeating Rows 6, 7, and 8, (13 sts, 114 rows).
Rows 126 – 128: Repeat Row 7, (13 sc 3 rows). Fasten off, leave a 5” tail.
FRINGE:
Step 1: Cut 26 pieces of yarn 8”-10” in length.
Step 2: Fold yarn in half. Insert hook into first stitch of R1. Place center of yarn over hook and pull through stitch, pulling up a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tighten to secure, making sure the ends are even.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for each stitch on R1 and R102/R128 to create a fringe. Trim if needed.
PRO TIP: Use a piece of tape to hold down the fringe for trimming to get an even cut across. Trim using a scissors or rotary cutter up to the bottom edge of the tape, then carefully remove tape to avoid splitting the yarn fringe.
Adult Crochet Fringe Scarf Pattern:
- Finished size should be approximately 5” wide and 58” long.
Row 1: Ch 18, sc in back bump of 2nd ch from hook and each ch, (17 sc).
Rows 2-5: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st across, (17 sc, 4 rows).
Row 6: Turn, ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), (2 dc) in 1st st, skip next 3 sts, [4 dc in next st, skip next 3 st,] 3 times, (3 dc) in last st, (17 dc).
Rows 7-8: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st across, (17 sc, 2 rows).
Row 9: Repeat Row 6, (17 dc).
Rows 10-11: Repeat Rows 7-8, (17 sc, 2 rows).
Rows 12 – 146: Continue repeating Rows 6, 7, and 8, (17 sts, 134 rows).
Rows 147 – 149: Repeat Row 7, (17 sc 3 rows). Fasten off, leave a 5” tail.
FRINGE:
Step 1: Cut 34 pieces of yarn 8”-10” in length.
Step 2: Fold yarn in half. Insert hook into first stitch of R1. Place center of yarn over hook and pull through stitch, pulling up a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tighten to secure, making sure the ends are even.

Free Crochet Fringe Scarf Pattern FAQs
How wide is a skinny scarf supposed to be?
This skinny scarf crochet pattern runs 4 inches wide in both child sizes and 5 inches in the adult. That’s narrow enough to sit flat under a coat collar without adding bulk, but still wide enough to cover your neck properly. Anything much narrower starts sliding around instead of staying where you put it.
Is a narrow winter scarf warm enough?
Yes, and the yarn is why. This uses worsted weight 4, which is a warm yarn with the right stitch. Narrow scarves lose warmth when they’re made in something thin and lacy. Made in worsted and wrapped twice, this one traps plenty of heat. You stay cozy, just without the bulk.
How much yarn do I need for this crochet scarf pattern?
One skein covers most sizes. The adult takes about 200 to 220 yards, and the child sizes take less. If you’re working right at the edge of a skein, grab a second one just in case – running out three rows from the end is a special kind of frustrating.
Is this a good crochet scarf pattern for beginners?
It’s rated Easy and there’s no shaping and no seaming. If you can chain and work a straight row, you can make this fringed scarf! Plus the Single Crochet and Double Crochet tutorials cover everything the pattern asks you to do.
How long does it take to crochet a fringe scarf?
Plan on an evening or two for a child size and a bit longer for the adult. It’s a straight, repetitive make, so it moves along once you’re going. This project makes good television crochet… you don’t have to keep checking where you are.
