Best Crochet Scarf Pattern for Chunky Yarn
This free crochet chunky scarf pattern works up quickly in bulky yarn. It includes two sizes for children and adults with an easy to adjust length, and option to finish the ends with or without fringe, so each scarf can be made to suit the wearer. The unisex design works well for children through adults and makes a great handmade gift, including men’s crochet gifts.
Things to Know Before You Start
- The length is fully adjustable, making it easy to size for kids, teens, and adults.
- Two size options are included, so you can make one for anyone on your list. Both versions are written to work smoothly with chunky and bulky yarn.
- Gauge affects the width and overall feel of the scarf. A quick gauge check helps keep the finished size and drape on track, especially when changing yarn or hook sizes.
- Chunky yarn creates a dense, cozy scarf that stitches up fast. Different fibers will change the weight and softness, so choose yarn based on who the scarf is for.
- Once you learn the Elixir stitch, the pattern becomes quick to repeat, making it easy to make more scarves in different sizes.
- Two different end finishes are included, letting you keep the scarf simple or add a bit more detail without changing the stitch pattern.

Cozy Crochet Chunky Scarf Pattern
Interesting Stitch Pattern
These cozy feature beautifully lightly open stitchwork that add a touch of texture and fun to your scarf. The openwork of the pattern not only looks amazing but also provides a comfortable and breathable air to the scarf, making in perfect for temperature regulation. The lovely stitchwork creates a visually appealing texture that takes this cozy scarf from classic to extra.
Adjustable Length
The scarf size and length was designed based on the longer end of classic scarf sizes, due to the thickness of the chunky yarn used. If you would prefer a shorter (or longer length) it is easy to adjust! You can simply add or subtract an additional section of dc clusters from your scarf. Or you can add or subtract one row of dc clusters from each section of the scarf if you’d rather! If you want a lighter weight scarf, you can use a lighter weight yarn, and if you still use the recommended K/10.5 6.5 mm hook, you will get a lovely, airy result! You can also opt to use a thicker yarn for extra coziness – just make sure to use a larger hook or your scarf will be too stiff.
Bonus! Keep it forever!
You can download the ad-free PDF version of this bookmark pattern for just $2, on Dec 21, 2025!
It includes many helpful photo tutorials to guide you as you create and learn the Elixir Stitches and is of course printable!

What I’m Watching & Listening To (While I Crochet)
I love to binge a series on Prime or Netflix while I crochet! And I’m just as likely to be listening to an addictive new audiobook on Libro.fm – I know that y’all love to do this too! The simple, repetitive stitches of this crochet chunky scarf pattern mean you can get into a really nice rhythm and barely have to look at your work, leaving plenty of attention for that new show you’ve been dying to see. Plus, thanks to the chunky yarn, these scarves are a rather quick project, so you can easily finish several in a weekend!
Right now, I’m obsessed with anything sci-fi and fantasy, as always.
I’m really enjoying watching The Boys on Prime, and getting ready to rewatch Fallout (season 1) since the second season finally started! Right now on Libro.fm, I’m listening to Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab and it is so living up to all the hype! It’s one of those books that you just get sucked into immediately upon reading and though I’m less than a quarter of the way in, I can say with certainty that I highly recommend this one!

SPECIAL Stitches Placement GUIDE: (Child: Round 7, Sml/Lg Adult: Row 8/9)
Stitches are placed based on each group of 5 stitches from the prior row/round: (2 dc, ch-1, 2 dc). When working into each group you will work a lhdc in first dc, skip next dc, work 3 lhdc in ch-1 sp, skip next dc, work a lhdc in last dc. This stitch placement keeps the look of the current row consistent with the other rounds having the groups of 5 stitches.
Stitches are worked where arrows indicate, single arrow for single stitches, 3 arrow where the 3 lhdc are worked in the ch-1 space.
Stacked Double Crochet (st dc) Tutorial:
STEP 1: Single crochet in magic circle (or next st), insert hook into front vertical bar of single crochet, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on hook.
NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.

- Blocking the scarf is recommended to show off the lovely stitchwork.

SPECIAL Stitches Placement GUIDE: (Child: Row 14, Adult: Row 17)
Stitches are placed based on each group of 5 stitches from the prior row/round: (2 dc, ch-1, 2 dc). When working into each group you will work a lhdc in first dc, skip next dc, work 3 lhdc in ch-1 sp, skip next dc, work a lhdc in last dc. This stitch placement keeps the look of the current row consistent with the other rounds having the groups of 5 stitches.
ADD OPTIONAL FRINGE:
Step 1: Cut 38/48 (child/adult) pieces of yarn 8”-12” in length.
Step 2: Fold yarn in half. Insert hook into first stitch of R1. Place center of 1 strand of yarn over hook and pull through stitch, pulling up a loop. Pull both ends of the yarn through the loop and tighten to secure, making sure the ends are even.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2, placing 1 strand of yarn in each stitch of R1 and R78/R106 to create a fringe. Trim fringe so that it is even across or to reduce length if desired.
PRO TIP: Use a piece of tape to hold down the fringe for trimming to get an even cut across. Trim using a scissors or a rotary cutter up to the bottom edge of the tape, then carefully remove tape to avoid splitting the yarn fringe.
