Sweet Stripes Fingerless Gloves
What have you got in your yarn bin? I’m asking about the sad little leftovers rolling around at the bottom! If you’re making these gloves for kids or even teens, those scraps are just what we need.
Gloves in a busy house can be a losing battle. Sound familiar? Then y’all are going to like this one! The Sweet Stripes Fingerless Gloves are an easy crochet fingerless gloves pattern that comes in four sizes, from toddler all the way up to large adult. One pattern, and you’ve covered your little one, your tween, your teenager and yourself!
Every photo in this post is one of my own kids. They’ve been wearing these gloves for years, in every size I make. My boys wore them when they were little, and the bigger ones still grab a pair on the way out the door. I love that one pattern just grows right along with them!
It’s a great crochet fingerless gloves pattern for beginners who are ready for something past scarves and washcloths. A pair only takes 40 to 120 yards. Which is why I mentioned your leftover scraps!

Easy Crochet Gloves Free Pattern Overview
The Sweet Stripes Fingerless Gloves are a free crochet fingerless gloves pattern worked in the round with no seaming. Basic stitches and simple repeats make them a good fit for advanced beginners. Four sizes run from toddler to large adult, so you can make a pair for everyone. A pair takes as little as 40 yards, which makes them a good fall scrapbuster.
Crochet Fingerless Gloves in 4 Sizes: Toddler to Large Adult
Often when you find a kids fingerless gloves crochet pattern you like, it comes in one child size and that’s it. Then your teenager wants a pair and you’re off hunting all over again! Not here. You get all four sizes in one place!
- Toddler – 2.5″ across and 4.5″ long
- Child – 3.25″ across and 5.75″ long
- Teen/Adult – 4″ across and 7″ long
- Large Adult – 4.5″ across and 8.5″ long
That Large Adult size is the one I’d point out. It’s 4.5″ across and a full 8.5″ long, so it fits big hands and comes up nice and high on the wrist. My husband and my oldest both wear that size. Which means you can make a pair for the guys in your life without hunting down a separate men’s pattern!
The sizes are close enough together that you don’t have to guess. Measure across the widest part of the hand, just below the fingers, and pick the size closest to that number.
A glove works up round by round, so you can try them on as you go. That’s my favorite part about making these for kids. You’ll know they fit before you’ve finished, instead of finding out at the end that you’ve made something two sizes too small! 🫤
In a single season your toddler will probably move up to the Child size. You’ll already know the pattern by heart by then… you’ll just start with a few more stitches.
Best Yarn for this Crochet Fingerless Gloves Pattern
Let’s talk yarn, because it’s the reason I keep coming back to this pattern.
You need worsted weight, and you need somewhere between 40 and 120 yards. That’s it. A toddler pair takes around 40 yards. Even the Large Adult size tops out near 120. So that leftover ball that’s too small for a hat and too big to throw away? This is what it’s been waiting for!
I designed these with Red Heart Super Saver Stripes. It does the color changing for you, so you just crochet along and the stripes turn up on their own. Solids and ombres work beautifully too, so use what you’ve got! If you live somewhere color you might want to use wool or a wool blend so they are extra cozy. Because these easy crochet fingerless gloves have a loose stitch with openings they are great for longer seasons and warmer climates too!
Pro Tip! One thing to watch when digging through your scrap basket. Stay in worsted weight for the whole pair. Mixing weights partway through will change your sizing on you. Different colors in the same weight, though? Go for it! Some of my favorite pairs came out of using up three different leftovers, and nobody has ever once asked me if I meant to do that.
Gauge
One more thing before you start. Do make a gauge swatch. I know, I know! But these are fitted, and gauge is what makes them fit. You’re looking for 3 dc x 2 rows = 1″ square. If you have more stitches than that, go up a hook size. Fewer, go down one.

Sweet Stripes Gloves – Your First Crochet Accessory Pattern!
Scarves and washcloths are wonderful. But at some point you want to make something that has to actually fit a person, and that’s a different kind of nervous! If that’s where you’re at, start here. This is an easy pattern written for advanced beginners on up, and it’s a friendly crochet fingerless gloves pattern for beginners who’ve never made a wearable before.
The Sweet Stripes Stitch pattern is simple once you’ve got the rhythm of it. There’s detailed instructions included below to walk you through the technique that starts you off. The pattern starts with one challenging stitch – the Foundation Single Crochet but I’ve include a photo tutorial and link to my video tutorial to help you through it! You can always use a chain to start the gloves off too, just follow the pattern instructions! And you’ll be working in the round, so you can slip them on and check the fit as you go. No waiting until the very end to find out how it turned out!
How to Crochet These Easy Fingerless Gloves
Every round in this pattern is single crochet or double crochet. Two sizes (out of four) have a final round of half double crochet just to get the fit right. That’s what you’ll need to know. The Sweet Stripes Stitch does the pretty work for you, and it comes from where the stitches go, not from anything tricky. You work in the round from the wrist up, with a few increase rounds to make room for your thumb. Then you skip those thumb stitches to make a simple hole, and finish up the hand. When I said easy crochet fingerless gloves pattern, I meant it!

You’ll also start with a foundation single crochet, which gives you a stretchier edge than a regular chain. Sounds fancy, but it’s just two steps repeated.

STEP 1: Ch 2, insert hook in 1st ch, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yo and pull through 1st loop on hook, yo and pull through both loops on hook. 1 fsc.
STEP 2: Working in the two loops on top, (this is your “foundation chain”), insert your hook, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yo and pull through 1st loop on hook, yo and pull through both loops on hook. 2 fsc.
STEP 3: Insert hook into the next “stitch”, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), yo and pull through 1st loop on hook, yo and pull through both loops on hook. 3 fsc.
STEP 4: Repeat Step 3 until you have completed the number of stitches called for in your beginning chain. Sl st the 1st and last sts together, being careful not to twist your work. Keep in mind that the top of your row is where the hook is located. If desired, use the yarn tail to stitch the small gap where the 1st and last st were joined.
NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first to familiarize yourself with all the steps.
- Make a gauge swatch for proper sizing.
- Beginning chain does count as a stitch on double crochet rows.
- Beginning chain does NOT count as a stitch on single crochet rows. First stitch of these rows should be placed in the same stitch as the beginning chain.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
- Gloves are worked in joined rounds.
- Thumbhole is formed by increases placed in the middle of the rounds to form the base of the thumb. The extra stitches are skipped in a later round to form the thumbhole.
- Using Chainless Foundation Single Crochet for the first round is highly recommended for a stretchier glove.

Crochet Fingerless Gloves Make Great Gifts
Here’s the cool thing about giving gloves as gifts. They’re small, they’re quick, and everybody uses them. Nobody opens a pair of handmade gloves and thinks “well, what am I supposed to do with these?”
They’re also the rare handmade gift that works for teenage boys. A hat has to suit them, a scarf has to match something. Gloves just go in a coat pocket or car glovebox and get used all winter.
Because the yardage is so small, this is a good one to batch. I’ll put a movie on and get through two or three pairs in a weekend, all from leftovers, all different colors. Line them up and you’ve got most of a gift list handled without a trip to the yarn store… not that that’s a bad thing!

Crochet Fingerless Gloves Questions (FAQs)
Are fingerless gloves easy to crochet for a beginner?
These ones are! The pattern is rated Easy and written for advanced beginners on up. If you can single crochet and double crochet, you can make these. There’s a photo tutorial and a video for the one technique that might be new to you.
What size fingerless gloves should I make for a child?
Measure across the widest part of the hand, just below the fingers. Toddler is 2.5″ across, and Child is 3.25″. Pick whichever is closest. Because you work in the round, you can try them on partway through and adjust before you’re finished.
How long does it take to crochet a pair of fingerless gloves?
Most crocheters finish a pair in a weekend. The toddler size runs 11 rounds and Large Adult runs 21, so the smaller sizes go faster. Once you’ve made one pair, the second goes quicker because you’ll know the rhythm of the stitch.
Why crochet fingerless gloves instead of full finger gloves?
Because you can still use your hands! Your fingers stay free for your phone, your car keys, your kid’s zipper. Full fingers also mean shaping five separate tubes, which is fiddly and much slower to make. Fingerless gloves give you the warmth where it counts without any of that.
Why are fingerless gloves called texting gloves?
Because your fingertips stay out, so your phone screen still knows you’re there! Regular gloves don’t register on a touchscreen, which is why people started calling this style texting gloves. You’ll also hear them called hand warmers, wrist warmers or arm warmers, depending on how far up the arm they go.
Do crochet fingerless gloves have a thumb hole?
These ones do. There are a few increase rounds partway up that make room for your thumb, and then the rounds go back to normal above it. No separate thumb piece to make and sew on, which is one of the reasons this pattern works up so quickly.
Can you wear fingerless gloves in really cold weather?
Absolutely, and they work better than you’d think. Most of the cold you feel comes from your wrist, where the blood runs close to the surface. Cover that and your whole hand feels warmer. In serious cold, wear a pair under a full glove or mitten for an extra layer.
