Normally, I love to listen to an audiobook while I crochet, or watch the latest movie on Amazon Prime! When the kids are in school (obviously summer gets in the way a bit!), I like to indulge in a bit more crochet time, and treat myself to a new audiobook to inspire my stitches! And you can too! Once you get the hang of these fun, textured stitches that make hopscotch “hop” lol, you can easily indulge in a fascinating new audiobook, or binge that new show you’ve been dying to watch.
Right now, I am watching Season 2 of The Boys on Prime (so good!), as well as re-watching seasons 1 & 2 of House of the Dragon so I can start watching season 3! Yes I have a type for books and shows lol! In keeping with that I am currently listening to (and loving!) The Kingdom of Copper, the second book (and equally as engrossing as the first!) in the Daevabad Trilogy by Shannon/S.A. Chakraborty. I highly recommend this excellent series and author if you like unique fantasy and world building.
I’m deep into my re-read / re-listening to the ACOTAR A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas in anticipation of the long awaited new books coming out in October and January! I’m currently on book 5 A Court of Silver Flames. Next up after this one will be starting my re-read / re-listen of the Crescent City series also by Sarah J. Maas because there are crossovers and I’ll not say anything more about that because I’m not spoiling it for anyone! I’ve read every book she’s written and they do not disappoint!

The Best Yarn for Your Crochet Hanging Basket Free Pattern!
Choosing the right yarn for your rustic hanging basket crochet pattern makes a big difference in how it looks, feels, and holds up over time. For a project like this, I recommend sturdy cotton or cotton blend yarns that give you good structure, clear stitch definition, and easy care.
The yarn I used for this free hanging basket crochet pattern is Paintbox Cotton Aran. It’s a sturdy, high quality cotton yarn that comes in a ton of fun colors and neutrals. I love that this yarn is soft and nice to work with (gentle on your hands!), but it still holds up and is strong like you would want the yarn for a basket to be.
Paintbox Cotton Aran worked so well for this project because it’s sturdy, soft, and holds its shape nicely. That matters a lot for a hanging basket, since you want it to stay looking good once it’s filled and hanging up. It has the easy-care qualities, durability and stitch definition you expect from cotton, so it’s a great fit for practical home decor patterns like this one.
Paintbox Cotton Aran is a cotton yarn that feels soft in your hands and gives a really nice texture once stitched up. It’s strong enough for projects that need a bit of structure, but still pleasant to crochet with.
If you want another option, Lion Brand Cotton Hemp is also worth a look. It has a natural look, soft feel, and lovely stitch definition that works beautifully for home projects. If you’re after a durable yarn with a slightly earthy, rustic finish, that one would fit this pattern nicely too.

YARN: Paintbox Cotton Aran Worsted Weight 4 yarn, (100% cotton, 1.7 oz/50 g, 93 yds/85 m)
Sample Colors: Soft Fudge, Pine Green, Dusty Lilac, and Pansy Purple
TOTAL YARDAGE: 70 – 200 yds, SMALL: 60 – 80 yards, MEDIUM: 120 – 140 yards, LARGE: 180 – 200 yards
HOOK: US G/6 4.0 – 4.25 mm
OTHER SUPPLIES: Yarn needle, Scissors, OPTIONAL: 3 in Wooden Rings
Finished Size: (Basket laid flat, approximate)
Small Basket: 6″ wide x 4” deep x 10″ long
Medium Basket: 8″ wide x 6” deep x 12″ long
Large Basket: 10″ wide x 8” deep x 17″ long
Gauge: 4 esc x 12 rows = 4” x 4”
Gauge is not very important for this pattern.

Extended Single Crochet (esc):

**First xdc of the round you will ch 1, and work a stacked double as the first stitch.
Stacked Double Crochet (st dc) Tutorial:
STEP 1: Single crochet in magic circle (or next st), insert hook into front vertical bar of single crochet, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on hook.
Extended Single Crochet Decrease (esc2tog): Insert hook in next st, yo and pull up a loop, insert hook in next st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 1st 2 loops on the hook, yo and pull through next 2 loops on the hook. Esc2tog completed!

PATTERN NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first. Make a gauge swatch if desired for proper sizing.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch. First stitch of sc/esc rounds should be placed in the same st as ch 1. First stitch of xdc/xtr rows should be placed in next stitch.
- Sl st only count as a stitch on the final round of the pattern.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.
- Basket is worked in the round, then the hanger is worked in rows, in one continuous piece, with a final edging round.
- Pattern includes instructions for 3 basket sizes and 2 hanger options (with and without an optional wooden ring), both of which work for any of the basket sizes.
