Maroon Multiple Myeloma Crochet Hat Pattern
I’m so honored to share the Waypoint Crochet Chemo Hat Crochet Pattern with you. This free crochet chemo hat pattern in all sizes is especially meaningful to me, as my maternal grandmother Frances passed away from multiple myeloma cancer and amyloidosis in 1990. Though I was only a teenager at the time, and I saw how challenging those months of treatment were for my grandma. She found a lot of comfort from hats and blankets during her treatment. The Waypoint crochet chemo hat pattern is my way of giving back — a free, fun and simple design you can stitch to give comfort to a loved one, or for donation to those in your community or spread the love through cancer charities.
Please continue reading to discover how you can get the PDF version of this soft crochet beanie and more patterns like it, in the Sweet Potato 3 Crochet Cancer Challenge 2026.
Happy Hooking

A Crochet Chemo Hat Pattern for Cancer Awareness
The Waypoint free chemo hat crochet pattern is a soft, comforting hat you can make in any color to support cancer awareness. It’s a free pattern with four sizes included.
The Waypoint Beanie was designed with love, to honor someone I love and help others in her memory. Designed to be lightweight, and comfortable on sensitive scalps, this free crochet chemo hat crochet pattern makes a meaningful gift for anyone undergoing treatment.
You can crochet it in maroon to support multiple myeloma cancer awareness, as I’ve done, or choose a shade that represents another cause close to your heart. Since awareness colors can vary, you may want to check in with your chosen charity to confirm if which color best represents the type of cancer you’d like to support or if there are certain colors or sizes of hats that they need most. Making and donating these hats is a powerful way to provide comfort and show that you care.
Free Crochet Hats to Donate for Charity
If you joined us in September for the preemie hat challenge, or the Crochet Cancer Challenge last year in 2025, you know that pattern was created as part of a movement in the crochet community to give of our time and talents to those in need. The Waypoint two color crochet hat pattern is free to download for a limited time, so you can easily make and share as many hats as you like. You can choose to make a donation to a local hospital, cancer charities, or gift them directly to someone in need. We simply ask that in exchange for the free download of the pattern PDF that you use your talent to make at least one hat to donate to a charity or family in need. Every hat made with love also carries with it hope, encouragement, and a reminder that no one fights alone.
If you’d like to find my other super soft crochet beanie patterns, available in a range of sizes, to make for the tiniest and most precious heads? Their links are here.
Waypoint Preemie and Baby Beanies
Frances’ Waypoint Beanie is my newest design, created especially for charity donation. By downloading this free chemo cap crochet pattern during the event, you’re pledging to make at least one hat to give to a cancer support group or charity, or a family in need. Thank you so much for using your time and talents to give back!!
Like the rest of the Elixir designs, the skill level is intermediate or adventurous beginner, and the pattern includes three sizes so you can make the best fit for heads in need.
I’ve used Lion Brand Basic Stitch Yarn, and it’s a beautiful soft yarn, with a nice sheen that is gentle on delicate skin. You can use your choice of worsted and aran weight yarns for this project, but I highly recommend that you use a soft and supple yarn for your donations to have the greatest impact.
The Waypoint Beanie pattern includes detailed tutorials and photo guidance to help you create the brim. This beginner friendly hat pattern has detailed written instructions for the body of that hat, and is crocheted using only basic stitches. It’s free to download all month as part of the event, and together we can make a difference for those brave fighters.
Yarn Choice: Lion Brand Basic Stitch
For Frances’ Waypoint Crochet Chemo Hat Pattern, I chose to use Lion Brand Basic Stitch Yarn, and it was truly the perfect choice. This yarn is 100% ani-pilling premium acrylic, making it not only soft and gentle against sensitive skin, but also easy to care for. Both qualities that are truly necessary for a chemo hat and other crochet hats to donate. The pattern also works up equally well in beautiful in Lion Brand Heartland Yarn or Caron Simply Soft, just ask my pattern testers! This soft yarn glides beautifully on the hook and creates a fabric that feels soft and breathable, offering comfort and warmth to the wearer. And the fact that it’s machine washable is even better, so hats can be worn and washed as needed without losing their shape.
With more than 36 gorgeous shades to choose from, you can make a hat in multiple myeloma cancer awareness in the deep maroon called Pomegranate, or pick a color that represents another cause close to your heart. Affordable, durable, and cozy, Lion Brand Basic Stitch is a yarn that you will truly enjoy creating with, for a cancer hat made with love.
The Waypoint Stitch Pattern
The Waypoint stitch is a truly simple, yet visually interesting combination of stitches. The fabric that is created is a soft, flexible fabric with visual texture that is enhanced by alternating colors between rows. It’s not only fun and very easy to crochet but also practical too. The fabric is warm, but by using a larger hook it is very soft and breathable. This makes it an excellent choice for hats like the Waypoint Crochet Chemo Hat Pattern, as well as the Waypoint Preemie and Baby Beanies pattern in this same series.

But I also truly enjoy designing hats with a very special purpose like the Waypoint Crochet Chemo Hat Pattern.

Multiple Myeloma Cancer Awareness
Maroon is the color that represents multiple myeloma cancer awareness, and that’s why I chose it for the Waypoint Beanie Cancer Hat.
It’s a way to honor my grandma Frances and so many others who’ve been touched by this cancer. If you’d like to support organizations doing work in the U.S., here are a few great ones:
- International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) — One of the largest and oldest organizations dedicated exclusively to multiple myeloma. Focus on education, support, research and advocacy.
- Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) — The largest nonprofit focused solely on accelerating a cure for multiple myeloma. Focuses on research, clinical trial matching, patient navigation and resources, financial assistance and treatment locating.
- HealthTree Foundation for Multiple Myeloma — Helps patients become active participants in their care. Focuses on education, patient coaching, clinical trial finder, research participation opportunities, and online community.
If you feel moved to, choosing maroon yarn for your hat, wearing blue, or donating to one of these charities are all lovely ways to show support and remember those we’ve lost. ❤️
