Calliope’s Compass: A Free 12×12 Granny Square Pattern
There’s something about watching a circle turn itself into a square that I will never get tired of. It feels like a little bit of crochet magic every single time. ✨
Calliope’s Compass is my newest free 12 inch granny square pattern, and it’s for anyone who likes a square with a bit more going on in the middle. The mandala center is where all the fun is. After that it settles right down into classic granny rounds, out to the border and done.
It’s a 12×12 square, worked in one piece, and there’s no seaming at all!
Y’all know I can’t leave a granny square alone… and this one brings my Calliope wheel back around to where the whole collection started.
💜 Happy hooking!

What Is the Calliope’s Compass Granny Square?
Calliope’s Compass is a 12 inch crochet granny square with a mandala center that opens out into traditional granny rounds. It starts in a magic circle. The middle rounds build a wheel of petals. Then the wheel squares off, and the rest is granny stitch clusters growing outward to a plain border.
The finished square measures 12″ x 12″ after blocking. It’s designed as a blanket square, but one square on its own makes a pillow front or a bag panel just as easily.
You work it in one piece. No blocks, no joining, no seaming.
Skill Level: An Advanced Beginner Granny Square
The Calliopes Compass granny square pattern is rated advanced beginner, and I want to tell you where the advanced part actually lives, because I think it helps to know going in.
It’s the center. Those first several rounds are worked a little differently than a classic granny and where the stitch heights change, so you’ll want to count. That’s the bit that earns the rating.
After that? It’s granny clusters all the way. Three double crochet in a space, chain one, over and over, out to the edge. If you’ve made a plain granny square before, you already know how to finish this one.
I mention it because I know how sampler blankets go. A square gets marked a level up, folks skip it, and then there’s a gap in the blanket… and nobody wants that! The tricky part here is small, it’s right at the start, and if it goes sideways you’ve lost twenty minutes and a few yards of yarn. Frog it and go again. 🙂
You’ll want to be comfortable with:
– Working in the round
– Following a written pattern
– Counting stitches
– Working stitches of different heights
– Blocking a finished square
Need some help with the stitches? I provide photo tutorials within the pattern to help you with the included techniques and more! I am always happy to help you with any questions you may have. Why This 12×12 Granny Square Is Worked in One Piece
Here’s what I love about a one piece square. You start in the middle, you keep going, and then you’re finished. No blocks to keep track of, nothing to line up, and no sewing at all other than seaming the Calliope’s Compass 12 inch granny square to the others of course.
While you’re crocheting the center Calliope portion of the square, I even show you how to carry your yarn colors from one round to the next, so you have fewer ends to weave in! That part matters more than you’d think! When you’re making a dozen squares for a blanket, the ends really do add up.
Sizing is easier this way too. Your gauge stays the same the whole way through, so if your square comes out a little small you can bring it up on the border round. Or if you’re a bit larger (check the Notes section for when to measure!) you can leave off the final round of Granny Stitch to meet the size that fits with all your other squares easily!
And if you made my Calliope Meets Granny square last year, this one is her cousin! That square is four little blocks seamed together, and this one grows out from a single center. Both are 12 inches, so they’ll happily sit side by side in the same blanket.
About the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL
Calliope’s Compass is my square for the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket 2026, hosted by Madame Stitch. 12 designers, 12 squares, one blanket. Every square is free on the designer’s blog, and this one is free right here forever.
How it Works:
I have such fond memories of staying at my grandparents house. They made so much from scratch, gardened and canned, because well, that’s just how they lived! At night we’d have handmade blankets and quilts on our beds, for breakfast we’d have homemade jelly on toast from the farmers market, bake cookies, and during the days we’d wear socks that my grandma hand knitted for us with our boots.
So when I had the opportunity to join the collaborative Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL 2026 again this year thanks to our lovely host Debbie of MadameStitch, I knew I had to join the fun! Granny Squares carry with them so much nostalgia! Y’all are going to love this FREE collaborative Blanket crochet-along inspired by the classic retro granny square, too! But trust me, there’s plenty of modern takes on the design and they all come together beautifully!
Each 12×12 crochet square in the blanket, has been designed by a different designer. Each 12 inch granny square is aimed at a different skill level, so that you, everyone and anyone can crochet along with each of us every week! Some designs are rated intermediate, but with the video and photo tutorials, you’ll be able to up level your skills!
It might surprise you, just how versatile the classic granny stitch can be! I promise that even those that have been crocheting for years, will discover the granny stitch being used in ways you’ve never seen before!
Each week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday a new blanket square for the CAL will be released on the designer’s blog for FREE. There will be a total of 12 sections with a different look and take on the granny stitch pattern. Together the squares make a stunning blanket to show off and snuggle under.

About the Name Calliope’s Compass
Calliope is one of the nine Muses, the one who watches over epic poetry. She has been lending her name to my designs for a while now. The Calliope wheel started life as a motif on a boho handbag, and it has turned up in washcloths, coasters, a sea turtle shell, and a mandala wall hanging since then!
The compass part came from looking at the finished square. Those rings of petals radiating out from the center look like a compass rose to me. Four corners, everything pointing outward from the middle.
Muse and compass. Seemed right for a square that starts as a wheel and finds its way to being a square.

PATTERN NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern first.
- Beginning chain does not count as a stitch, so first stitch of each row should be placed in the same stitch as beginning chain.
- Repeat stitches between [ and ] or { and } the number of times indicated.
- Work stitches between ( and ) in the same stitch.
- Turning after each round is utilized in the Granny Stitch portion of the square from R11-14 to keep the corners of the square from twisting.
- Measure your square after Round 13, if square is 11.5” or more skip to Round 15.
- I alternated 4 different colors, every 4 rounds.
- Colors can be dropped + carried between rounds. For seamless color changes, pull new color through on the final yarn over of slip stitch join at the end of each round. It is easier to fasten off yarn after each round of granny stitches.
- For seamless color changes, pull new color through on the final yarn over of slip stitch join at the end of each round.
- Blocking each square individually, then blocking the final seamed square is strongly recommended.
- This is a crochet pattern for creating a 12” x 12” blanket square. You can use your finished square however you like.
- Previous knowledge of crochet is assumed.

Crochet Granny Square Pattern Testers!
I feel so lucky to have such an amazing group of pattern testers. They worked hard to bring the Calliope designs to life, including the newest Calliope Meets Granny Square pattern for beginners. Their feedback helped refine the instructions and make sure every step was clear and beginner‑friendly.
Seeing the beautiful versions they created is one of my favorite parts of designing. Each tester brought their own colors and style, turning the crochet granny square pattern into something unique while still showing off the fun granny‑style motif.
A huge thank you to Kami Jones, Joanne Melling, Linda Woodthorpe, Carol Schupp, and Robin Quade for testing and sharing their work.

Professional Tips for a Crochet Sampler Blanket
You´ll need to make sure your squares match in size to complete a sampler blanket that looks amazing.
- Make one square and measure it before you make eleven more. If it comes out at 11.5 inches, you have one square to redo instead of a dozen.
- Fix sizing with your hook, not your tension. Going up half a millimeter is easier than trying to crochet looser for hours on end.
- Mark your corners. Stitch markers in the four corner spaces will save you counting the same round three times.
- Check the center before you commit. A center that ruffles means your tension is loose. One that cups means it’s tight. Sort it out in the first few rounds while it’s quick to redo.
- Weave in ends as you go. Trust me, that way you´re more likely to finish it.
- Block every square. Blocking settles the stitches, squares up the corners, and brings a slightly small square up to size.
Color Ideas for Your Mandala Center Granny Square
This is my favorite part of any granny square. The mandala center gives you a lot of little rings to play with, so color placement changes the whole feel of the square.
A few combinations to try:
– Bright center with a deep, dark border
– One color for every center, different borders on each square
– Warm rings in the middle fading to cool rings at the edge
– Change colors every 2 or 3 rows instead of every row for a color block effect
– A variegated center with a plain border to calm it down
– Single solid color throughout and adding a just 1-2 accent color rounds
– Scrap yarn center, one color for the granny rounds
For a blanket, keeping the outer rounds and border the same across all your squares ties everything together. Then you can go wild with the centers. Each one is different, but the blanket still reads as one piece.
What to Make With 12 Inch Granny Squares
A 12 inch square is a useful size. It’s big enough to be a finished thing on its own, and it’s a fast building block when you want something larger.
- Pillow front )two squares back to back and you´re done!=
- Blanket square
- Tote bag panel
- Wall hanging
- Table Centerpiece
- Baby blanket from four squares
- Chair back cover
- A panel on the back of a jacket

Frequently Asked Questions About 12 Inch Granny Squares
Is this granny square good for beginners?
It’s rated advanced beginner. The mandala center asks you to count and to work stitches of different heights, so it’s a step up from a plain granny square. Everything after the center is standard granny clusters. If you have made a basic granny square and you’re ready for a little more, this is a good next one.
How do I make my granny square exactly 12 inches?
Make one square first and measure it after blocking. If it’s small, go up half a hook size. If it’s large, go down half a size. Blocking alone will often bring a square up by half an inch, so measure blocked, not straight off the hook.
Do I have to seam this square?
Nope. Calliope’s Compass is worked in one piece from the center out, so there’s no seaming at all. The only joining you’ll do is attaching it to other squares if you’re making a blanket.
Why is my granny square center ruffling?
Ruffling means too many stitches or tension that’s too loose. Try a smaller hook and recount that round. If the center cups upward instead, your tension is too tight and a bigger hook will fix it. Adjust half a millimeter at a time.
What yarn should I use for a 12 inch granny square?
Worsted weight 4 with a 5.0 mm hook will get you to 12 inches with this pattern. You can use any yarn you like, but your square will change size. If you’re making a blanket, use the same yarn and hook for every single square.
Can I make this square bigger or smaller?
Yes. Stop a round early for a smaller square, or add granny rounds for a bigger one. The mandala center stays the same either way, so the look holds up at any size.
