Blue Colon Cancer Elixir Cap Pattern

I’m so honored to share the Elixir Chemo Cap Crochet Pattern with you. This free cancer hat design is especially meaningful to me, as my mother-in-law Teresa passed away from colon cancer in 2017. She lived with us during her final year, and I saw firsthand how important it is to have soft, comfortable hats during treatment. The Elixir chemo cap crochet pattern is my way of giving back — a free, simple design you can stitch for charity, for a loved one, or for donation to cancer support groups.

Please continue reading to discover how you can get the PDF version of this soft crochet beanie and more patterns like it, in the Sweet Potato 3 Crochet Cancer Challenge.

Happy Hooking

A Chemo Cap Crochet Pattern for Cancer Awareness

The Elixir chemo cap crochet pattern is a lightweight, gentle hat you can make in any color to support cancer awareness. It’s a free pattern with three sizes included.

The Elixir hat is a pattern consciously created with love and remembrance. Designed to be lightweight, breathable, and gentle on sensitive scalps, this chemo cap crochet pattern makes a meaningful gift for anyone facing treatment.

You can crochet it in dark blue to support colon cancer awareness, as I’ve done, or choose a shade that represents another cause close to your heart. Since awareness colors can vary, it’s always a good idea to check with your chosen charity to confirm which shade represents the type of cancer you’d like to support. Making and donating these hats is a small but powerful way to provide comfort and show support.

Free Cancer Hat Pattern for Charity

If you joined us in September for the preemie hat challenge, you know that this design is part of a wider movement encouraging makers to use their skills to help make the world a little more comfortable for someone who needs it. The Elixir chemo cap crochet pattern is free to download for a limited time, so you can easily make and share as many hats as you like. Whatever your preference – you might donate them to local hospitals, cancer charities, or gift them directly to someone in need, your handmade hat will carry kindness. I believe that every hat made carries with it hope, encouragement, and a reminder that no one fights alone.

If you’d like to find my other super soft crochet beanie patterns, available in a range of sizes, to make for the tiniest and most precious heads? Their links are here.

Hopscotch Preemie Hat

Labyrinth Lullaby Hats

Terri’s Elixir Hat is my newest design, created especially for charity donation. By downloading this free chemo cap crochet pattern during the event, you’re pledging to make at least one hat to give to a cancer support group or charity, or a family in need. Thank you so much for using your time and talents to give back!!

Like the rest of  the Elixir designs, the skill level is intermediate or adventurous beginner, and the pattern includes three sizes so you can make the best fit for heads in need.

I’ve used Lion Brand Mandala Ombré Yarn, as it’s soft and gentle on delicate skin. You can opt to use a range of worsted and aran yarns for this project, but I highly recommend that you use a soft and supple yarn for your donations to have the greatest impact.

Terri’s Elixir Hat pattern includes stitch tutorials and photo guidance to help you through each step. It’s free to download all month as part of the event, and together we can make a difference for those brave fighters.

Yarn Choice: Lion Brand Mandala Ombré

For Terri’s Elixir Chemo Cap Crochet Pattern, I chose to use Lion Brand Mandala Ombré Yarn, and it could not be a better fit. This yarn is 100% low-pill acrylic, making it incredibly soft and gentle against sensitive skin, exactly what’s needed in a chemo cap. The pattern also works up beautifully in Lion Brand Heartland Yarn, as you can see in my tester photos! The soft texture glides beautifully on the hook and creates a fabric that feels plush yet breathable, offering comfort without irritation. Another huge benefit is that it’s machine washable, so hats can be worn often and washed easily without losing their shape or softness.

With more than 14 beautiful self-striping shades to choose from, you can make a hat in colon cancer awareness in the tonal blue called Harmony, or pick a color that represents another cause close to your heart. Affordable, durable, and cozy, Mandala Ombre is a yarn that truly lives up to its name — the perfect partner for a cancer hat made with love.

The Elixir Stitch Pattern

The Elixir stitch is a simple yet striking combination of stitches that creates a soft, flexible fabric with a gentle texture. It’s not only fun to crochet but also practical too. The fabric has enough drape to be comfortable while still holding its shape thanks to the combo of shells and linked stitches. This makes it an excellent choice for hats like the Elixir Chemo Cap, as well as the Elixir Fingerless Gloves, Elixir Cup Cozy and Elixir Washcloth patterns in this same series.

Elixir Chemo Cap Pattern Testers

Each one took the time to make their own version of this cancer hat and provided thoughtful feedback that ensured the pattern was clear, accurate, and easy to follow. It means so much to me to see the projects you all make with my designs, and my testers play a big part in making that possible. Thanks to their dedication, I’m able to provide patterns that are not only beginner-friendly but also meaningful for charity donations. Colon Cancer Awareness

Dark blue is the color that represents colon cancer awareness, and that’s why I chose it for the Elixir chemo cap.

It’s a way to honor Terri and so many others who’ve been touched by this cancer. If you’d like to support organizations doing work in the U.S., here are a few great ones:

  • Colorectal Cancer Alliance — they lead awareness, support, and prevention efforts for people with colon and rectal cancer.

  • Colon Cancer Coalition — focuses on increasing screening, education, and removing barriers so more people can get checked early.

  • Fight Colorectal Cancer — they advocate, raise awareness, and provide resources to patients and families.

If you feel moved to, choosing dark blue yarn for your hat, wearing blue, or donating to one of these charities are all lovely ways to show support and remember those we’ve lost. 💙
