Free Laptop Cover Crochet Pattern

A crochet laptop cover is such a nice way to make something useful feel a little more personal. I love projects like this because they aren’t just pretty to look at. They also do a real job, and the Sweet Blossom Laptop Sleeve is soft, sturdy, and practical enough for actual portability.

Table of Contents

I wanted this design to feel a little prettier than a plain case, but still be functional and easy to carry. The handles, texture, and layered construction all help with strength and protection for your computer, and with sizing for two laptop sizes, it’s the kind of project that makes a lovely gift or a fun treat for yourself.

Sweet Blossom Crochet Laptop Case Pattern

The Benefits of a Double-Layered Crochet Laptop Cover

One of the nicest things about this design is the double-layered construction. It gives the crochet laptop cover a bit more padding, helps it hold its shape better, and adds an extra layer between your laptop and everyday bumps or scratches. It also makes the finished sleeve feel more sturdy, which is especially practical if you plan to carry it often.

How to Make Your Crochet Laptop Sleeve Sturdier

For a crochet laptop case that holds its shape well, start with a yarn that has a bit of body and make sure your stitches are nice and even. Keeping your tension slightly firm can help reduce stretching over time. The pattern includes a crocheted liner, but if you like to sew as well, you can add a sewn lining of fleece, or another soft fabric or even add an iron-on (fusible) fleece stabilizer to any fabric of your choice.

Ways to Customize the Look of Your Sweet Blossom Sleeve

Yes, I know this is a practical project. But there are still plenty of ways to make it feel more like you. Here are a few ideas to get you started, and I’m sure you’ll think of even more once you get going.

  • Use your fave colors to make it feel a bit more personal.
  • Try school colors, sports team colors, or club colors for a fun custom version.

  • Make one for your girlfriend, boyfriend, or bestie in their favorite colors.

  • Add stripes, color blocking, or a contrast border for a different look.

  • Sew in a fabric lining with a print you love.

  • Add a button tab, loop closure, or zipper if you want a different finish.

  • Stitch on a small badge, patch, or label inspired by music, work, or a hobby.

  • Personalize it with initials or a simple embroidered detail.

  • Swap the handles for a different shape or length to suit how you carry it.

What I’m Watching & Listening To (While I Crochet)

The Sweet Blossom Computer Cozy is a meditative make, once you learn the repeats!

I love to binge a series on Prime or Netflix while I crochet! And I’m just as likely to be listening to an addictive new audiobook on Libro.fm – I know that y’all love to do this too! The simple, repetitive stitches of this crochet laptop cover mean you can get into a really nice rhythm and barely have to look at your work, leaving plenty of attention for that new show you’ve been dying to see. Since this is a larger project, you can plan a fun binge session to try to make yours in a weekend or work a little each evening and finish in a week or less!

Right now, I’m obsessed with anything dystopian and fantasy, as always.

I’m really enjoying watching season 2 of  The Pitt on HBO, and getting ready to rewatch and then for a light hearted switch because the Pitt is intense, I’ve also just started rewatching Upload on Prime. I saw the first 2 seasons when they came out, but haven’t seen season 3 or 4 yet, and this is a great show to crochet to!

Book-wise right now I’m really enjoying listening on Libro.fm, which supports local book stores! I’m listening to Faithbreaker which is Book 3 of the Fallen Gods trilogy by Hannah Kaner and it is so good y’all! The world building is really phenomenal and it’s one of those series that you just get sucked into immediately upon reading and I’m going to be sad when it’s finished! Needless to say, I highly recommend this series!

What are you watching and listening to these days? Tell me in the comments! 🧶💜

How to Choose the Right Size for Your Crochet Laptop Cover

Picking the Best Size for Your Laptop

Getting the size right is one of the most important parts of making a crochet laptop cover that actually works well. Before you start, measure your laptop’s width, height, and thickness so you can compare it to the finished sleeve size. This pattern is written with negative ease, which means the cover is meant to fit snugly rather than loosely. That helps keep your laptop more secure inside and gives the finished crochet laptop sleeve a cleaner shape.

If your laptop falls between sizes, I’d usually suggest looking at both the width and thickness before deciding. A slightly snug fit is good, but you still want to be able to slide your laptop in and out without a struggle. If you use a hard shell case on your laptop already, make sure to measure with that on too.

Tips for Checking Fit as You Go

It’s always worth checking the fit as you work, especially on a project like this. If you’re using a different yarn than the pattern calls for, or your tension runs a little tighter or looser than mine, the size can shift more than you’d think. The easiest way to avoid surprises at the end is to compare your piece to your laptop as you go instead of waiting until everything is finished.

I like to lay the piece flat and check the width first, then fold or position it around the laptop to get a rough idea of the fit. You’re looking for a nice close fit without pulling or stretching too hard. If it already seems too roomy early on, that’s a good sign to make an adjustment before you go further. A crochet laptop cover will always turn out better when you check the fit along the way rather than hoping it all works out at the end.

Free Crochet Laptop Cover Pattern

The Sweet Blossom Laptop Cover is a padded crochet laptop sleeve with sturdy handles, double layered construction, and sizing for both smaller and larger laptops. It’s practical for everyday use, but still feels special enough to gift.

This pattern was originally written for and published in the April 2023 edition of Crochet Foundry Magazine. You can find more information about that in the Ravelry Listing linked  → HERE!

This pattern was originally designed with Furls Wander yarn, which is a worsted weight acrylic yarn that is soft and smooth. Sadly this yarn is discontinued. I really liked working with this lovely yarn and all the amazing colors. But I have found that Lion Brand Heartland makes an excellent substitute for Wander, so that is what I recommend for this pattern.

Here’s what you need to get started: approximately 200- 250 yards of Lion Brand Heartland yarn each in 2 colors of your choice (400-500 yds total), plus a US H/8 5.0 mm crochet hook. This laptop cozy crochet pattern is written in US terms and includes a photo tutorial to help you along the way. The pattern is available in two sizes to fit 13–14 inch laptops and 15–16 inch laptops.

  • 13–14 inch laptop size: Outer sleeve measures 10 inches wide x 15 inches long including the handle. Liner measures 9 inches wide x 13 inches long up to the handle opening.
  • 15–16 inch laptop size: Outer sleeve measures 11 inches wide x 17 inches long including the handle. Liner measures 10 inches wide x 15 inches long up to the handle opening.

The pattern is designed with 2 inches of negative ease in both width and length for a snug fit.

CROCHETING IN THE 3RD LOOP:

The 3rd loop is found on the wrong side, just below the working loops or 1st and 2nd loop. Turn the working (1st & 2nd)  loops toward you, then a little further so you can see the wrong side of the last row. Find the loop just past the 2nd loop, this is the 3rd loop you will be working your stitches into. Work your stitches just as you would in the 1st and 2nd loops. Hdc in the 3rd loop is pictured below. You will end up with a ridge on the right side of your work, formed by the 1st and 2nd loops.

** Place the inner liner inside of the outer sleeve and pull it down so that the last round of the inner and outer sleeves are lined up at the top edges, and the openings for the handles are aligned on both sides. Pull the bottom corners together. Use stitch markers to hold the 2 pieces together while you work. (See photos below).

Round 43: Ch 1, work in the BLO of the outer sleeve and the FLO of the inner liner, sl st in each st around, (80 sl st).

Round 44: Work sts for this round around sl sts of round 43. Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join, (80 sc). FO and weave in ends.

STITCHING THE HANDLES:

BOTH SIZES: Using the Main Color yarn, carefully stitch the handle opening of the inner and outer sleeve together. For best results use a running stitch or mattress stitch. FO and weave in the ends (see photos below). Repeat for the handle opening on the other side of the sleeve.

Cleaning and Care for Your Sweet Blossom Laptop Sleeve

Because the Sweet Blossom Computer Case was designed in Furls Wander, it’s a pretty practical choice for everyday use. Lion Brand Heartland (my recommended substitution since Furls Wander is sadly discontinued!) is a 100% acrylic yarn and is listed as machine washable in cold water, but it should not go in the dryer. For best results, wash it on a gentle cycle and lay it flat to dry. Lion Brand also recommends hand washing or using a mesh laundry bag if you want to be a little extra careful with your finished project.

That said, even though the yarn itself is washable, I’d still treat a crochet laptop cover a bit more gently than a blanket or scarf. Since this project is meant to hold your laptop, it will stay looking nicer longer if you spot clean small marks when you can, reshape it after washing, and let it dry fully before using it again. A gentle wash here and there is fine, but I wouldn’t toss it in with heavy towels or rough items that could stretch the stitches out of shape.

Other Yarn Suggestions for Your Crochet Laptop Sleeve

If you want to use an alternative yarn, the cleanest and easiest-care option is usually another smooth acrylic or acrylic blend. That gives you the benefit of easier washing, less absorbency, and a better chance of stains lifting out than they would from more absorbent fibers. The tradeoff is that some acrylics can pill over time, and high heat is a no-go, so you still need to skip the dryer.

Cotton yarn is another option if you want a firmer, less stretchy crochet laptop sleeve. It tends to hold its shape well, which is a plus for fitted cases. On the cleaning side, cotton is very absorbent, so it can soak up spills more easily and may take longer to dry. That can be fine, but it does mean you’ll want to make sure it dries completely before sliding your laptop back inside.

Wool or wool blends would be my least practical choice for this kind of project unless you really want the texture or look. They can be lovely, but they’re usually a little fussier to wash and more likely to need hand washing. For something that may get set on desks, carried around, and used often, I think an easy-care yarn makes the most sense!

Pro Care Tip: Spot clean when needed, or machine wash cold on a gentle cycle inside a mesh bag. Lay flat to dry and avoid the dryer.
