Switch to DK weight yarn with a smaller hook and you’ll get mini pencils and crayons sized just right for a keychain. Free Pencil Amigurumi Crochet Pattern!
The classic yellow lead pencil amigurumi looks just like the real thing, down to the eraser and sharpened tip. It’s a fun back to school crochet idea that works as a soft toy, desk decoration, or cute teacher gift. Don’t let the realistic details scare you off. The shaping is very simple to do and color changes are too.
Use the same free pattern to craft a colored pencil amigurumi! Just leave off the eraser and make the body and tip the same color. I’ll show you exactly what changes to make in the pattern to achieve the colored pencil look, easy peasy. Then voilà – you’ve got a brightly colored pencil to add to your set.
Free Crochet Crayon Amigurumi Pattern!
The crayon amigurumi works beautifully on its own, but you can adjust the details for different versions. Keep the classic wrapper stripe for a traditional crayon look, or change the body to one solid shade (I would go with white) for a marker-style toy. With a few color changes, you can build a whole rainbow set that feels just like a box of crayons. - YARN: Paintbox Aran Worsted Weight 4 yarn (100% cotton, 1.7 oz/50 g, 93 yds/85 m)

- PENCIL: Pencil Color: 50 yds, Eraser: 15 yds, Wood: 10 yds, Metal: 5 yds, Tip: 5 yds
- COLORED PENCIL: Pencil Color: 50-60 yds, Wood Color: 10 yds
- CRAYON: Crayon Color: 20-25 yds, Wrapper Color: 30-40 yds, Stripes: 5-10 yds
- Sample Colors:
- PENCIL: Mustard Yellow, Bubblegum Pink, Jet Black, Stormy Gray, Soft Fudge

Back Post Half Double Crochet:
Working around the post of the stitch instead of in the top loops
STEP 1: Yo, insert hook from back to front in the space between previous stitch and working stitches of the row below, below the loops working around the main body/post of the stitch. (1)
STEP 2: Then bring the hook across the front of the stitch, and through the space on the other side of the stitch from front to back, between the working stitch and the next stitch. (2)
STEP 3: Yo and pull up a loop, (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook. Bphdc complete! See photos below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you wash crochet toys?
Yes! Spot clean small messes with a damp washcloth and a dab of gentle soap. For a full bath, acrylic amis can go in the washing machine inside a laundry bag, on cold and gentle. Skip the hot dryer though. Heat can melt acrylic yarn, so let them air dry flat.
What stuffing should I use for amigurumi?
Polyfil is my go-to. It’s soft, light, and holds up to washing without clumping too bad. Stuff a little at a time and pack it firmly, especially in the tips. In a pinch, yarn scraps work for small pieces like these. Just know they’ll feel a bit denser than fiberfill.
Why does my stuffing show through my stitches?
Your hook is probably too big for your yarn. For amigurumi, go down one or two hook sizes from what the yarn label says. Tighter stitches close up those gaps and help your pencil and crayon hold their shape. Stuffing color matters too – white polyfil hides better under light yarn.
What does amigurumi mean?
Amigurumi is a Japanese word for crocheted or knitted stuffed toys. Around here we shorten it to “amis” LOL. The style uses single crochet worked in a spiral, so there’s no visible seam line. If you can single crochet in the round, you can make amigurumi!
Are crochet toys safe for babies and toddlers?
These designs use embroidered details instead of plastic safety eyes, so there are no small parts to pull loose. That makes them a safer pick for the littlest hands. For babies, skip keychain hardware and any added beads or buttons. When in doubt, keep handmade toys for supervised play.
