DIY a Mother Earth Crochet Ball

I really think this fun crochet earth pattern is such a cute way to celebrate our big beautiful world. 🤗 This free globe amigurumi pattern works up into a soft crochet ball that’s giftable, and great for Earth Day activities. It’s an advanced beginner project with colorwork, and it’s a fun fit for kids, classrooms, or handmade display pieces.

I had a lot of fun designing this one because it feels a little different from the usual amigurumi projects I create, but it’s still interactive and has practical use once it’s finished. Y’all know I love a project that can be both fun and useful, and this one gives you two size options so you can make a larger toy ball for little hands or a smaller hacky sack version for older kids, teens, and adults.

Free Crochet Earth Pattern in Two Sizes

This earth ball crochet pattern includes both a full-size and mini version, so you can choose the size that works best for you. The larger size makes a soft globe ball for little ones to play with, while the smaller version is great for older kids and adults to kick around. Both are a fun fit for Earth Day activities, handmade gifts, and simple amigurumi projects that use just two colors. There’s also a tapestry crochet chart included to help outline the continents around the world.

These little globe balls are cute for display too, especially in an office, classroom, homeschool space, or reading nook. The smaller globe amigurumi also gives you room to play with size, and you can make it even tinier by using thinner yarn and a smaller hook. That would work well for a keychain, bag charm, or little desk buddy.

  • great for classrooms
  • homeschool parents
  • quick market makes
  • gifts for kids!

Make Your Crochet Earth Bigger or Smaller

If you’re diving into your yarn stash to make this free crochet globe pattern? Then you might not have the yarn I’ve suggested using. Different yarns can result in a different size and look. Such as:

  • Using thinner yarn and a smaller hook will give you a much smaller finished globe, which is handy if you’d like to turn the mini version into a keychain or tiny display piece. This is a good option if you want something portable and quick to make.
  • Worsted cotton is a nice choice if you want your crochet earth ball to feel sturdy and hold its shape well. It works especially well for toy balls, desk decor, or classroom display pieces.
  • Plush yarn can be fun to experiment with, but it probably won’t show the continent chart as clearly as smoother yarn. If you want the tapestry crochet details to stand out, a yarn with better stitch definition will usually work better.
  • How firmly you stuff the ball can change the final look quite a bit. A firmer fill will give it a rounder, neater shape, while less stuffing can make it feel softer and a little more squishy.

Find the step-by-step instructions for both versions below, as part of this free pattern!

History of This Earth Amigurumi Pattern

I’ve been an environmental “nerd” for most of my life. When I was in elementary school the recycling and save the rainforest movements were really coming up and they resonated with me big time. I remember the push for McDonald’s to go from styrofoam to paper boxes and wrappers and doing a skit in school about this. The Green in Green Fox Farms stands for my commitment to such environmental and sustainability efforts, did you know that? I probably don’t talk about it enough. ♻️🫶

So designing a Mother Earth pattern was a great fit for me. It also combines 2 of my favorite crochet techniques – Amigurumi and Colorwork! If you enjoy these things too, then I recommend you check out my Baby Dragon Dice Egg Pattern next, which also uses tapestry crochet in the round. It’s a really fun drawstring pouch to make that you can use to hold any trinkets you like!

This crochet earth pattern was originally published in April of 2021 for the Go Green Issue of Happily Hooked Magazine. However, because as part of the contract I wasn’t able to publish or sell the pattern initially, I never quite got around to writing up an introduction here on the blog! So, I’m bringing this pattern back into the spotlight and giving it its proper due, and it’s now FREE on the blog too!

My earth crochet pattern is a cute way to practice color changes and tapestry crochet! I originally created the Earth Ami Ball as a fun toy with a jingle ball inside inspired by my then 1 year old daughter – she’s now 7! She absolutely loved the sample and I was inspired by my older kids who were tweens at the time, to create a hackysack version too. The older 2 were just getting into that hobby, and it seemed like a great fit to make something that would appeal to kids of all ages and adults too.

Pro Caregiver Tip! If you’ve got littles or grand littles then the classic ball is sure to be a hit with them for tossing around, with or without a jingle. You can also use the larger size for teaching some basic science and geography lessons if you homeschool or simply enjoy making your children’s education part of everyday life. Either ball would make a great teacher gift too! The smaller hackysack ball is a fun gift for older kids, teens and young adults as well as a unique addition to craft markets.

Why You Want Crochet Earth Balls in Your Life!

A crochet globe ball also works as a cute little display piece that can be added to learning spaces, work areas, and shelves at home. Because the free pattern comes in different sizes, your own crocheted earth can fit nicely into a variety of spots where you want to add something colorful, educational or a talking piece.

In a classroom or homeschool space, it can be used for Earth Day displays, geography themes, nature study, or quiet hands-on play. In an office, it makes a fun desk accessory for teachers, travelers, book lovers, or anyone who likes world-inspired decor. The smaller version is especially handy for shelf styling, basket displays, or keeping near a planner, calendar, or bulletin board.

Color Changes Tutorial:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHosQp80phs

Color Changes: To change colors from MC to CC, complete the number of stitches in MC indicated by the pattern, stopping at the last stitch. Create the last sc by inserting hook and pulling up a loop as usual. Drop the MC and pick up the CC yarn, yo and pull through both loops on the hook with CC, to complete the sc st. Carry the non-working yarn behind the stitches and catch it in a st every 3-5 sts. Repeat for each color change.

  1. Read through the entire pattern first.
  2. Pattern is worked in the round from the top down for both versions.
  3. Both versions are worked holding 2 strands of yarn together.

  5. New colors should be joined in the last stitch of the previous round at the final pull through for the sc stitch.
  6. You will carry the non-working yarn throughout the design, both versions. You can work around the yarn every stitch, or every few stitches.
  7. Repeat stitches between [ and ] the number of times indicated.

Earth Day, Slow Making, and Small Good Choices

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22, and while it started in the United States in 1970, it’s now marked around the world. Today, Earth Day is celebrated across many countries. Joining in can be as simple as spending time outside, joining a cleanup, planting something, learning more about the planet with your kids, or making something thoughtful by hand that sparks conversation about caring for the world around us. 💜🧶

Handmade projects like crochet are a good fit for Earth Day because they give you a chance to slow down and take a quiet break from the noise of the day. Research on crochet and other craft hobbies has linked them with positive wellbeing benefits, including improved mood and mental health support for many people.

If you want to lean into the Earth Day theme even more, you could try natural animal fibers like alpaca and sheep wool, or other eco yarns made with recycled fibers or organic cotton.

Now Your Crochet Earth Globe is Complete!

This crochet earth pattern is such a fun one to finish because it’s cute, a little unexpected, meaningful and actually useful once it’s done. The globe design can be a meaningful amigurumi project for Earth day (April 22nd), and the two size options give you more ways to use it for play, display, gifting, or learning.

The Mother Earth Globe Ball is a free amigurumi pattern that includes both a full-size and mini version. With just two colors, tapestry crochet details, and a chart to help shape the continents, this crochet earth pattern is a fun pick for Earth Day, classroom themes, handmade gifts, and spring or summer market prep. I hope you have a blast making your own little world. 🌎🫶
